Update Sunday pm: My mother found the hearing aids! They were in a tiny corner drawer in the kitchen. I swear I thought I'd looked in there but maybe not. It is a useless little drawer that just makes everything come together in her kitchen. It's right next to the dishwasher and if it is pulled out, the dishwasher won't open. So I think my father must have just tucked the hearing aids in there for some reason. She stuffs her Walmart bags in there so he had no reason to be in there during the night nor did she but whatever, they are found.
We had met with the audiologist on Friday and he made new molds. We were set to go over there at 8:30 am tomorrow to take a check for the replacements. Thank goodness that is a trip and and an expense we don't need to make. When I put the hearing aids back in his ears, he was just overcome almost. He's been so lost all week without them. And tonight, he is putting them in the tray they are supposed to go in, not on the counter!
Thank you all for your suggestions and encouragement to keep looking.
would you be???
My father's hearing is very poor. For 20 years we campaigned for him to get hearing aids. Just over 2 years ago (just long enough for the warranty to have expired), he got them and they have been wonderful. He loves them. He puts them in first thing in the morning and wears them until he takes his shower in the evening. He is a completely different person when he wears them and is very withdrawn without them in.
On Monday night I was called up to their house for an issue and after we got him to bed, I went into the kitchen and I remember seeing the hearing aids laying on the kitchen counter by his medicine where he always leaves them. The tops were open so you could see the batteries. That is how you turn them off, open the tops. I remember thinking, I wish we had put his hearing aids in while we were dealing with this other issue but we did not.
He called me at 7:30 am on Tuesday morning saying he could not find his hearing aids. He did get up sometime during the night due to this other issue. He does not remember moving the hearing aids, my mother swears she never touched them; I didn't move them. They are missing and we have looked the house over. Yesterday, DH and I went through every scrap of trash before taking it off just to be sure they had not accidentally been thrown away. His spot for his hearing aids is near the paper towel dispenser and the sink in the kitchen.
They do not have any pets, no garbage disposal. No one was in the house, nothing else is missing or disturbed. He wasn't dressed during these hours so I don't think he would have gone outside. We've looked in cabinets and drawers. The housekeeper who Mother hires occasionally came yesterday and dusted the den and bedroom which are the rooms he uses most and didn't find them. We've overturned cushions, checked pockets of clothes he wasn't even wearing.
We are out of ideas and have an appointment with the audiologist tomorrow. Any ideas on where to look before we spend $5000 to replace them?

I would check under the edge of the kitchen cabinets, on the floor. Maybe they got knocked off accidentally and fell there?

They're not in any of his pockets?

Well if it were me who lost them, they would probably be in the pantry, where I would go for a midnight snack.

Even without a garbage disposal, they could have been knocked into the sink. It is weird for both of them to be missing completely. I'm not sure what your dad's mental state is, but I would check: under the paper towel holder, in the drawer closest to their location, the first cabinet he would go into in the morning (does he get a cup of coffee, for example), the refrigerator, the freezer, all drawers in the kitchen, under rugs.

How about his own pockets. I sometimes find mine where they shouldn't be and put them in my pocket to return them to their place.

Where are the meds now since the aids were beside them? Could they be in a medicine container?
To make you feel a bit better, when my Dad was in bed with a really bad headcold, my Mum cleared all the used tissues and flushed them down the toilet. Yes, that was his dentures gone!

Under an appliance in the kitchen? They could have gotten knocked off the counter than kicked across the room. Under the bed? He put them in while he was up during the night. Went to bed then took them out and put them on the nightstand and they fell on the floor.

My first thought was down the sink. Possibly in the trash can. How large are they? Easily seen or easily overlooked if in the trash or knocked under something on the cabinet? Shoot, I hope you find them.

Our oven is right next to our dishwasher with the countertop over it. I'm amazed at what gets knocked down between those in that little space. Slide out any appliances that might be right next to where he left them.

He wasn't dressed during these hours so I don't think he would have gone outside. I'm assuming that saying he "wasn't dressed" meant he was wearing pajamas. Maybe they're in the cuff of the pants? If my assumption is wrong and he was not actually dressed at all, disregard.

They're not in any of his pockets? We've checked everything he wore the day before and regularly wears just in case. I even checked coat pockets and it has been warm here for at least a couple of weeks. The disappeared between 9 pm after he was already in bed and 7:30 am the next morning so the only thing he had on with pockets was a shirt and I checked there first thing.

Well if it were me who lost them, they would probably be in the pantry, where I would go for a midnight snack. I've checked cabinets but I'm going to check his cereal boxes tonight. I was trying to retrace his normal morning routine in my head and he usually eats cereal. I looked in the cabinet and drawer with bowls and spoons.

That is key to me. It means that he or Mother picked them up and held them in a way that the batteries didn't fall out as we have found no stray batteries lying about. I just thought of his cereal so I'm going to check there. He doesn't drink coffee but I did check where he keeps soda in the refrigerator.

The bed is the only place I can think of. I'd pull every sheet and blanket off and check carefully.

They are pretty large because one of them has an extra piece of plastic on it that sticks out. That was required to help it fit better as my father doesn't have a normal shaped ear canal in one ear. They wouldn't fit down the sink.

Check the warranty, you might not have to pay the full amount. If my dad had lost these just 2 weeks earlier, he could have had them replaced with a one time replacement for about 10% of the cost. This time I'm asking about an extended warranty. Most people bug you to death to buy extended warranties but none was mentioned when we've been back for check ups.

I would check all around on the floor between the night stand and the bed really well. When my mom's dentures went missing at the nursing home, everyone claimed to look everywhere for her partial and none of the staff turned them up. Finally after about two weeks had passed and I was about ready to have another one made, my brother was visiting her and decided to check the floor between the bed and the night stand one.more.time. Sure enough, her teeth had fallen down and bounced under the edge of the night stand! Crisis averted, but geez. You'd think that the staff would have checked the floor around that night stand much better than they did.
Also how about the washer or dryer or laundry hamper? If he slipped them in his pocket and then tossed the shirt in the wash they could have fallen out there.

My parents supplemental insurance paid some on the first pair but I've found out they no longer contribute to hearing aids. Medicare won't pay a dime.

They were on the counter the at 9 pm after he went to bed so they could not have been in the previous days clothes. Mother did check the laundry just in case.

I was going to suggest the hamper as well.
Did you check couch cushions?
Silverware drawer?
Where are the batteries kept? Could he have put them there?
I know you said trash was checked, but all trash cans? Bathroom, too?
Could he have grabbed them and notice a light needed to be shut off in the shed or garage or something?
