I searched and didn't see a thread yet about this. For those of you who are fans, what did you think? I'm not sure yet. I'm holding out judgment until another episode or two. I didn't really care for last night's although I'm also never really fond of the episodes where The Doctor changes to his next form. Also I don't like Clara so that was another strike against it. But, I'll give it another try of course.

The Critics here have given it the 'thumbs up' in their reviews but comments from ordinary fans of the series seem more mixed though. It is new, and a big change, so it will be interesting to see what people think after they have watched the next episode or two. The BBC have said that it was watched by 7.3 million people here, the most watching an opening of series episode since 2010. No figures about how many people watched worldwide though.

DBF and I watched last night and we both thought that Peter Capaldi had a lot of promise with his portrayal of the Doctor. We also both think it'll be interesting to see how the character develops over the season.

I enjoyed it and I am not normally a huge fan. I love Peter Capaldi.

I liked it, I was getting a little tired of the relationship between Clara and 11. It was too much boyfriend/girlfriend. I like the idea of an older doctor. I do believe it's the first time I've seen Peter Capaldi deliver a shows worth of lines without swearing.

I was cautious because all the talk that he was going to be darker. I LOVED it, but we'll see what happens when he's finished changing and may not be as funny anymore.
I loved how he kept talking about where he'd seen his face before. Great homage to Pompeii.

I think I liked it. I say "think" because my focus was split doing other things (unfortunately). I will watch again and focus my attention. It usually takes me some time to warm up to new Doctors I didn't warm up to Matt Smith until Clara.

Ds & I watched it, loved Matt Smith being able to say good bye at the end. We also showed the after show and taped the pre show. Not sure if I will like him, yet. Loved David Tennant as the Doctor, took quite a while to warm up to Matt Smith. Still not sure about Clara as the companion...
We do love the show, though...

I liked the story line - very entertaining in Doctor Who fashion; it will take some time to get used to the new Doctor. I still miss [HASH]10 & Amy Pond!

I haven't watched it yet (but will be at this link where I'm also watching Outlander), but I've heard from my Whovian kids that they liked him. I, too, would like to see Clara go away altogether, but maybe I'll like her better with this Doctor.

We don't have it available to us, but my oldest and her husband watched it. They loved it. We aren't very picky fans though. Once they got past the early dorky story lines with [HASH]9, I pretty much liked everything. My dd just likes it all.
I did hear that Clara will be leaving soon, though. I liked her but I'm not worried about who the new companion will be. I've liked all of them except Donna and even she grew on me a bit near the end.

Clara is my favorite assistant by far. Love the impossible girl! So far we both really like the new Dr and the scottishness!! It will be different. Rumor has it that Clara will be done in December. We are doing Comic Con in SLC, Ut in Sept I will probably go as Clara. Dh is going as the 9th Dr.

The story was okay. I like the connection of the robots to an episode I loved with Ten. The pacing was a bit jaggd. Moffat's stories usually have good pacing: bits go faster, slow down, build up again. This one felt a little forced.
Capaldi is going to be fantastic. I mean, really really good. I hope we don't lose him quickly. I worry that we'll only get one season. This story won't be remembered as one of his best, but was a decent bridging episode. I like having the questions about him, like would he really throw the cyborg out the window? hmmmmm.
Now the bad: I dislike Clara. A lot. I also didn't like Rose much, but I dislike Clara A LOT more than Rose. She just seems so useless. 5'1" of crying? Suck up Beyatch. This story had multiple comments on her cute/good looks. Also, D [HASH]2 was watching and lost her shit when the dinosaur was set on fire. I think that sucked. Thank goodness they didn't do any real close-ups or make it more graphic. Who is usually very family-friendly, but that wasn't a very pleasant move.

I didn't get a chance to see it yet but am looking forward to it. I love love love Matt Smith's Doctor but think it is time for a more serious, more mature Doctor. I am another one who loves Clara and am very interested to see how the charactor works with the new Doctor.
And there's the Scottish accent. How can that be a bad thing?

I am also trying to withhold judgement for another couple of episodes. Currently I am not a fan of Capaldi's Doctor. I am hoping he will grow on me.
I got the feeling at the end that his "I am the Doctor" discussion was aimed squarely at viewers. I have not seen the writers ever work so hard at getting a new Doctor accepted.

Thunderstorm knocked out the end of the show for us so we'll have to wait a week to see the end. Interesting seeing the new doctor try to figure out who he, and everyone else, is. Also heard Clara will be leaving. Heard they're getting a male assistant but don't know if that's true.

My favorite parts were the I miss Amy line and the call from 11. I was not a Matt Smith fan, but found that endearing. I wasn't crazy about Clara's attitude about the regeneration but I guess she's coming around. I DID NOT like the stalker lady at the end. Ugh. And we have to have the Daleks in the second episode. Really? They usually hold out on bringing them in a little longer than this.
I will have to see a couple more episodes to decide whether I like him or not.

We absolutely adore 12 already. So much more of what I like to see in the doctor. Ten and three are my faves but twelve might knock three down a peg. We shall see. I loved this episode and didn't think they were forcing him at all. He is the doctor no matter what his face. I'm glad they went with an older one. Matt smith did nothing for me at all.

I didn't like Matt at first but he gre on me so I am giving this one a chance. I don't mind older because with Matt I told my husband if the Doctor kept getting younger he was going to need a nanny instead of a companion. Which made Clara kind of humorous for us. Anyway....there was more humor in it than I expected with this one. Loved the "I miss Amy" line too. The feel of the show was different, I mean, did they shoot it differently? Strax is such a hoot. Always calling Clara "boy" and offering her the mop water to drink.

Question - I saw somewhere that someone said they loved the callback to the girl in the fireplace. Did I miss something? Or were they referring to the call at the end to Clara?

The Girl in the Fireplace was an episode with the 10th Doctor. There were some references to it in this episode.

That's the episode with the Marie Antoinette ship where the cyborg-like aliens were trying to rebuild their ship using human body parts and were waiting for the girl from old France to be "ready"? The episode that the Doctor was referring to when he kept saying that he was missing something and it all seemed so familiar?
I REALLY enjoyed the new Doctor! It took me a couple of seasons to grow to enjoy 11 (Matt Smith) and I pretty much fell in love with 10 right away (David Tennant). But I really really liked 12.

It's not going to be my favorite episode, but I absolutely LOVE Capaldi as the Doctor. Love him already. I binge-watched the others (9-11) last winter, but had previously seen random episodes with each of those 3 doctors. This is the first time I've experienced a real time switch from one Doctor to the next. Thought it might take me time to adjust, but 12 just felt right from me from the very beginning.
I so hope those rumors are true about Clara leaving in December. Ready for her to go. I never took to her (I mentioned that in a previous thread) but I really really disliked her in this episode.
Something felt off with Vashtra, Jenny, and Strax as well. Strax is so funny, he's one of my favorites, but his lines seemed a little forced. I also hated the stalker lady at the end. Is she the same one who kidnapped River as a baby? She seemed like a younger version of her. Whoever she is, I can tell I'm not going to like that storyline. I'm not a big fan of Moffett's storylines in general.
Definitely caught the references to The Girl in the Fireplace, because I was anticipating them from the first time I saw the half-face of the robot. They were subtle, and I appreciate that.
I am definitely going to love the Scottish accent.

I also loved his nod to Caecilius and I enjoyed when he was running around in a dressing gown as it made me think fondly of him as the Angel Islington in Neverwhere. We recently rewatched that series, it's a fave. I was THRILLED when he was announced as the new Doctor and I feel it is amazing casting. I think he's going to be one of my favorite Doctors. You never forget your first Doctor and mine was Tom Baker. I think he's going to play it more like Tom, and that makes me very happy.
I do not like Clara. She's a silly little girl who IMO, will take up more time exasperating the Doctor rather than helping him. SO and I agree this Doctor needs more of a Romana. Of course, because the 4th Doctor is my favorite, I would like to see 12 have a companion more like himself.
Clara fit the bumbling absent minded professor of Matt Smith's portrayal, but with Peter...NO. Peter, IMO will be more mysterious and dark and will need a totally different relationship and expectation of a companion.
So to everyone who dislikes her, Happy Christmas, she'll be gone by then.
