Some vermin has decided to die in my garage. I do not know what. I do not know where. But the nose knows. My spouse is gone, my guy friends here are bigger wusses than I am, my neighbors are old and frail (and ridiculously sweet), AND the garage nearly qualifies for a disaster. Maybe not Chernobyl but definitely three-car-pile-up-during-rush-hour-traffic. We are moving the end of July and the garage must have some attention soon... but gross. I'm also an asthmatic and the dust, heat, and normal horrible air quality makes it difficult to breath - let alone breath the smell of death. Gah! So should I put this out on my local job board, what am I hiring? A handy man? Glutton for punishment? Is this something I can even hire out? I want someone who will organize and clean my garage - including removal of dead vermin, donation items and 65 pounds of spider webs.

I think you would be surprised what some people would do for $. They don't look at disasters the way we all do. I'd just put it out there (where you decide) and be honest. Perhaps pay by the job, so the person doesn't take too long to get it done.

We have a woman here that calls herself the Odd Job Girl. I'd call someone like that. Might do a google search for odd jobs in your area.

If you wait long enough whatever it is will dry up and the stench will go away.

Is there a Critter Control location near you? We used them to help us trap a raccoon nesting in our attic and they will also remove dead animals. A search for "pest control" in your area hopefully will bring up something.

I think I'd try calling a pest control company.

I think I might look for an exterminator and see if they can do dead rat location/retrieval/removal... you might also ask them for an appraisal of whether there's something that needs to be done, i.e., sealing cracks in the baseboards are something. (Not because I think you need to be responsible for that but because you could pass that info along to your landlord.) THEN I would look for someone to organize the garage once the pest situation is under control.

If you wait long enough whatever it is will dry up and the stench will go away. Give me a time line. LOL! We hit the 90 degree days and let me tell you... It is not drying up fast enough. LOL! THEN I would look for someone to organize the garage once the pest situation is under control. We live across the street from a massive building project (new strip mall). We are the first house in the neighborhood and have taken a hit with the mice and some little vermin that is native to this area that I can't remember what. It is similar to a shrew. I'm certain it is one of them. The hole is the garage door and we've asked the landlord if we could fix correctly it as we are fairly handy. For whatever reason he is not on board. While I've done my best to block it, it is not a challenge to the mice. But, you raise a good point in that DH set a bunch of traps his spring.. this might be easier to find than I was thinking! That's a mighty big duh moment. We have a woman here that calls herself the Odd Job Girl. I'd call someone like that. Might do a google search for odd jobs in your area. That's perfect! Thank you for that search word. I will look.

If you have Task Rabbit in your town, someone might take the job.

We had a horrible smell in our garage one time and couldn't find where it was coming from for quite awhile. We had been having quite a bit of rain, so the lawn was mowed when it was somewhat wet and it kind of clumped underneath the mower. This grass molded. It was gross. I couldn't believe it molded so quickly. I think looking for a handyman or a friend of mine, has a recycle business and she refers to it as "clean-outs".

My local AAA office has magnets up -- announcing a new AAA local contractor service. Check with your local AAA office if they are doing something like that.

I DID just mow the lawn before this started and it had been raining for 5 days prior. Let me check that too. I checked all the traps and no death... which had me afraid I'd actually have to **gasp** clean the garage.

snyder I think you solved it!!! I moved the mower and this chunk of wet gross grass was covered with mold and bugs. That would make total sense because the smell was really setting me off so for it to be mold makes a lot of sense!

If you do attempt to clean it, don't do it on the grass as the mold can spread in the grass causing fungus rings. We tipped our mower and hosed it down with the hose, then sprayed it with Lysol. Just be careful how far you tip the mower so the gas doesn't spill/leak out.
