I just drove to our library about a mile from our house then from there drove to a local organic food store. Total trip was less than 5 miles and I didn't get on the freeway. I would say 90% of the cars I passed had their lights on. I was surprised. Do you generally turn yours on when it's light and bright out?

I do. I'm not sure when or why I developed a habit of it, but I turn my lights on every time I drive without fail.

Aren't all vehicles automatically on? Here it's the law, and I love that I don't have to think about it.

Mine are automatic; they are always on. Ditto this^^^ Mine are also automatic. They have the daytime running lights and then when it starts getting dark, the regular headlights/taillights automatically come on. I can switch them so that I can control it but I don't see the point.

Mine are set to automatic but don't come on unless it's getting dark (or close to getting light in the morning). I think I'm going to start leaving them on all the time...I think it may be better for safety.

My running lights are automatic. I put my headlights on at dusk or in poor weather.

All vehicles here have daytime running lights. My van doesn't have an automatic setting, so I have to turn them on myself after dark.

My geo metro I was driving 10 years ago had auto headlights. Turn on the engine and the lights came on. I just assumed it was pretty standard these days so I was surprised my new Kia didn't have that feature. I turn mine on most of the time. But sometimes if the skies are super clear I have trouble reading my dash instruments because they dim when the headlights are on. So I turn them off to better read my dashboard.

I always have the running lights on, but turn on my headlights if it is raining or getting dark. DH's car is fully automatic and he always forgets to turn on the lights when he drives my car. I have to remind him.

I drive a 2004 Pilot and mine don't come on automatically. Now I understand why so many cars lights are on.

The lights in my car are set to automatic. I never even think about them. My First World problem is on the rare times I have to trade cars with DH and he has his lights set to manual. I have to constantly remind myself to turn them on in the rain, and at night, I'm terrified I'm going to forget to turn them off.

Yes I do use my lights during daytime driving. It really does make your car more visible. In the past when I have owned nicer cars they had automatic daytime running lights.

I bought a new car this year and was surprised it doesn't have automatic daytime running lights. I see a lot of cars that have them. If it's cloudy and dusk I turn them on. Dh hates those lights. When I turn them on when it's cloudy or when the sun starts going down and dh is in the car he always asks me why I turned them on. Don't know what his problem is with it.

When I had automatic lights, they were always on. Now I don't have them, so I just turn them on when needed.

My car (new even) doesn't have the daytime running lights, but I always turn them on anyway for safety. It's a habit for me too.

Mine are automatic as well. Don't get me started on motorists that don't seem to know our law (lights on when it is raining and snowing), and drive gray or other dark cars. (Hellooo! We can't see you at all!)

Come on automatic on my Corolla. Actually the only cars I see with out light on are cars that are pretty old.

I only turn them on when it's dark, going through a work zone or overcast. It's the law here that if it's overcast or your going through a work zone you have to have your lights on.
My car has an automatic setting or you can use them manually but I'm always nervous that the lights won't go off on their own after I park and my battery will die so I can't use the automatic setting. I worry about the craziest things.

Yes. As a child I can remember that New England was ahead of the game of my home state in this regard. They used to have signs on the highways that said "Lights on for Safety". Having your lights on can help you be seen in various different situations, even during the day. I think by having them come on automatically or being in the habit of always turning them on is a good idea because I think it cuts down on instances when conditions change and people don't think to turn their lights on if they were not already on. Things like a foggy patch, sudden rain, approaching dusk, construction areas, etc. These are all situations in which your lights may not help you see any better, but they help others to see you, which is obviously extremely important.

Mine are automatic as well. Don't get me started on motorists that don't seem to know our law (lights on when it is raining and snowing), and drive gray or other dark cars. (Hellooo! We can't see you at all!) I know! It's a little scary sometimes to be following a car that you can just barely see. DS's school is in an area that gets wicked fog and I normally turn left to leave the school. It got the point where I sometimes turn right and go out of my way to avoid cutting across a lane on foggy days, because it is so bad that I can't see approaching cars unless they have their lights on, and I can't trust people to use them. One day I pulled out, and as I was entering the road the approaching car finally got close enough for me to see them. And thank goodness they were turning into the school, or else they would have had to work hard not to hit me. The cars with lights I could see only because I could see the lights.
