My neighbors are having their house painted. The painters have started on the screened porch that's on my side of their house. Our houses are pretty close together (life in the city). My dog can hear the main guy and his assistant talking, and she will NOT stop barking and huffing and grumbling, etc. Some facts you should know about this particular painter: 1. He has been IN OUR HOUSE to paint dd's room, along with the same assistant. 2. His dog and my dog are best friends. 3. My dog and I have walked with him and his dog MANY times. 4. Our dogs have played in another neighbor's yard with that dog while we humans stood around and chatted. 5. He has given dog cookies to my dog often. 6. My dog LOVES this guy and rolls on her back to be patted when we run into them. 7. I have taken her outside several times to see that the guys out there are indeed her friends. 8. She can LOOK OUT THE DARN WINDOW and see them, in person. She continues to bark and huff and grumble. oy... It's going to be a long several weeks. Thankfully they'll be working inside also, and at some point they'll be around on the other side of the house. And hahaha that neighbor has two dogs.

Too funny!
My neighbor left a ladder leaning against the block wall between our houses. Maybe a foot of the ladder is peaking over. My dog won't stop barking and huffing at it. It took me a while to figure out what he was barking at.

She is grumbling to tell you she should be on the other side. She knows who he is and wants to be near the cookie/walkie/neck scratching dude. She is not dumb!

Your dog isn't dumb, she's protecting her family/territory. She's hearing things that may sound threatening to her, sounds she doesn't normally hear.
Maybe taking her out to have a look and maybe get an opportunity to recognize who is making the noise would help her calm down and realize there isn't a threat.

You may be right. He did bring dog cookies with him every day that he was here doing our painting. -- Also, the neighbor's cat and my dog are Worst Enemies so maybe she's upset thinking the painter is over there being friendly with That Cat.

The obvious problem here....your neighbors did not get prior approval from your dog to have their house painted.
My dog supervises the neighborhood from our glass front door. On the days neighbors have workers around she is constantly looking out from different windows and watching from the outside gates. She is moving all day and doesn't get her naps in.
I kid with some of the neighbors that all home maintenance and repair needs to be cleared through my dog so she can plan her day accordingly.

LOL. Considering I'm the dog-mom of a really smart dog who barks at and tries to play with cartoon animals on the TV, I'll never understand their thinking.

As a side note, I walked by my daughter the other day talking to her very giant puppy who is in a very frustrating stage right now and heard her telling him "you're not making good choices!" and gently reasoning with him to behave.

At least your dog is in your house barking and grumbling and only annoying YOU! Thank you! everyone around here leaves their dog in their yard so they would be barking all freaking day long, I can hear it with the windows closed, and now that it's summer it's nice to have them open. Once one dog gets going they are like dominoes and they all start. I can't stand a barking dog. Ugg dog owners are my biggest pet peeve.

My last dog would do the same thing. I thought it was because since the person was close to th house, but we were not open ing the door and letting them in, the dog now sees them as the enemy.

We do not have a doorbell. We have NEVER had a doorbell. But as soon as a doorbell rings on the TV, both dogs go straight to the door barking like an intruder is trying to break in. How do they even know what a doorbell is, much less that it means someone is at the door (on TV anyway)? Drives us bonkers as it takes several minutes to calm them down. We have to actually show them that no one is at OUR door. We don't have close neighbors and live in the boonies, so they aren't hearing others doorbells either.

Our German Shepherd Dog, smart breed, right This weeks dumb thing, she was scratching herself and hitting the floor with her hock, knock, knock, knock. Then she started barking at herself because she thought someone was knocking on the door. Yes, she even stopped scratching and went to the door to bark at our invisible visitor

I don't disagree with you, a barking dog can be really annoying. But what annoys me even more is cat owners who let their cats wander (and defecate) wherever they choose. I have a neighbour who has four outdoor cats, and one of them in particular is never happier than when he is winding up Turriff. He sits on our garden path, or on the fence, or on top of my shed, or in my back garden. He waits for Turriff to appear at the window and then sits and washes himself, while Turriff gets more and more upset. If he is in the back garden, I'll let Turriff out to chase him away, but he simply moves to the other side of the fence. I swear my poor pup is going to have a stroke one day because of that damned cat!

Okay...there's more trouble here. The mailman just came by and the painter was TALKING TO HIM! omg, consorting with Public Enemy #1. Because you know that mailman is up to no good...I mean, he comes by EVERY DAY and gets chased away (by barking ferociously through the door) but then he has the nerve to come back! And now he talked to Mr. Painter. **huff** and **grumble** and **snarl** and **bark** and *etc*

My two would bark at air. Or a spider crossing the street. (There is an acre of treed land right across the street and they can't hear or see anything from the family room with the curtains closed). They would bark and bark. THERE IS NO ONE THERE. A sketchy spider maybe but nothing else. I had 2 standard poodles which are the #2 dog on the totem pole next to border collies and yet they barked until we were deaf. The UPS man I could see being mad that he disturbed their sleep but the air? It's a good thing they were cute.

Right now I am watching about six squirrels, four Blue Jays, a few Cardinals and some Doves thrown into the mix about 4 feet outside the glass sliders. The Whippet does not care about wildlife, no interest, not a peep. But if his food is too hot or he does not like what he has been served, he barks his head off.

My husband likes to sit on the driveway in the evenings before/after our walk. The dog sits in his lap and surveys all of the comings and going. Usually don't make a peep, but you know he is judging it all. Being short, he can't see out the windows unless we keep the front door open. He doesn't bark; he just watches.

I have a neighbor friiend who visits frequently and has for 10 years now. Her silly Rat Terrier adores my DH unless he is wearing a cap. Then se must think he is a home invader the way she barks & growls. Once he takes he cap off, she is all about being his best friend.

DD works with rescue dogs to rehabilitate and socialize them before adoption and they do special "hat therapy" sessions to desensitize the dogs to hats because it's such a common problem.

omg so true, even the smart ones can be dumb. My male dog generally sees all that goes on from his perch at the window. If there is a dog walking down the street or a cat along the woods, he's on it. The minute he barks, the female jumps up to see what is going on. First order of business snap at his face so he'll leave because she's in charge now....then she bark, almost always facing in the wrong direction because she has NO IDEA what he was barking at. Makes me crazy! And of course she's not dumb! I couldn't believe my eyes the first time she pulled this one. When she wants something that my male has like a bone or the coveted spot on the couch next to me. She comes and barks at him and does her I want to play dance. The minute he gives chance she circles back around and steels his toy or seat! Poor guy fall for it every single time

Thanks Op for this thread it is really cheering me up to read all the pup stories. I used to be the mum of a collie/GSD and an elderly Tabby. When they both died I got a re-homed Siamese girlie who will not tolerate other animals. I really miss the fun of having both a dog and a cat.
