...or also known as how twitter will make you spend hours running down a rabbit hole.
Earlier today, I read something that essentially boiled down to the question of what is the greatest song of all time. The perfect one-that song that makes you go 'ohhhhh THERE IT IS.'
I am a music girl. Would rather listen to music than watch tv...but for the life of me, I can't pick THE BEST ONE EVER. There are ones that are my favorites, the ones that make me dance, the ones that make me remember, the ones that make me smile, the ones that make me cry...but the best? I can't decide.
So I come to you all because I just know you guys will have answers... What do you think is the BEST SONG EVER??

Nope, it's just not possible. My mind is flitting about from When You Wish Upon A Star to That's Amore, from Leonard Cohen's Take This Waltz (sublimely gorgeous) to Mack The Knife, Emeli Sandé's Clown to Well Did You Evah.
Not possible!

I think it's too hard to pick just one song as the best of all time because different songs suit different moods and memories. You know how certain smells can bring you right back to a very specific time and place? Music does that too and certain songs dredge up vivid memories that will forever be linked to that specific time and place for me. As an aside, I find it really weird that I can hear a song that I haven't heard in decades and will still know every single word! How is it that something like that can be so totally hard wired into your brain that you can still remember it perfectly years and years later, but some days I can't remember what I ate for dinner last night?

I think the "best song ever" changes with one's moods, moments, place in life, feelings, etc..
Here's are some of my favorites... *This list could change, at any time, based on my feelings at any given moment*
Areosmith "Dream on" MeatLoaf "Anything for love" Darius Rucker "History in the making" Climax Blues Band "I love you" Journey "Stay Awhile" Paul McCartney Maybe I'm amazed" Garth Brooks "The Dance" Dave Matthews "Steady as we go" Orleans "Still the one" U2 "With or without you" Chicago "Searching so long"

# 1 in 1971.
Epitomizes my teen years.

Can't leave out the two best belly-rubbin' songs of all time - When a Man Loves a Woman by Percy Sledge and Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton.

No such thing. Why doubt you just make me choose which one of my kids I love best?
I'll tell you what's NOT on my list:
American Pie (shudder) Hotel California Stairway to Heaven Anything by Elton John, Aerosmith, or the Eagles
That's just a small sample of the things I hate that will inevitably end up on this list

My best song ever changes all the time! Nope, it's just not possible. Ditto!! I can't just pick one. I would need several categories. Several dozen, probably.

I agree as moods change, situations, events so does that best song ever feeling but this song is sort of like my families "anthem" for lack of better word. Growing up, every party, bbq, family gathering at some point late into the night we'd all break out into this song. Awhhh one great memory I have of extended family growing up.

I actually thought of starting this thread because I was asked to pick my favorite song for our family reunion. I have no idea why, my sister is in charge. I like music, but I guess I can't say I'm obsessed. I scan through the radio stations and stop when I hear something I like. I rarely can name the name of the musician or song unless it is a very big name. I did some googling of the greatest songs, best songs... and settled on Louis Armstrong's A Wonderful World. I truly do not have a favorite, but I figured it was appropriate to pick that and not something more... to my liking since it's a family reunion.

My daughter on the other hand, is always correcting me. One song she memorized was that song with Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj. Every single word. I don't know if that's a good thing. ETA: Please note, I had to google the name of the song--->> Side to side

About 10 years ago I tried to compose a list of 100 favorites. Even that has changed, but I do think that we associate certain times in our life to music. Sometimes, we need to find that happy place.

I am Woman by Helen Reddy. I know, I know most people think it's a silly song but I love it.
Also Big Brass Bed by Bob Dylan.

I could NEVER pick just one, but I have a few favorites. I love the lyrics beyond belief. There's a completely different group of songs I like to dance to.
Imagine (John Lennon) Make you feel my love (Adele's version, although I love them all) When we were young (Adele) which just breaks my heart each time I hear it. I would not have liked this when I was young(er).
A few older ones What a Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong) Bridge over troubled water (Simon & Garfunkel) I love Paris (Ella Fitzgerald) Danny Boy
I'm in love with many of Ed Sheeran's songs, but they haven't been around enough for me to say I'll love them forever.

My kids ask me this occasionally. The one song that always makes me slow down or stop and simply let the music and meaning wash through me is "Summer Breeze" by Seals and Croft. It never fails to remind me to appreciate home and family, the two things that ground me in this life. Corny, I know.

And if I had to pick, a good portion of my list would contain Beatles tunes.
But isn't music awesome? So much variety for everyone to love.
