The only thing I can come up with is Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World. It's just that good.
I'll keep pondering though.

I worked in the music industry for many years so I can't narrow my choice down to one Kid in the 70's: "Delta Dawn" by Tanya Tucker was the first song I ever memorized Teen in the 80's: "True" by Spandau Ballet is my song of high school Late 80's and the 90's: Anything by Garth Brooks ... I freaking loooooove him and his music 1997: Our wedding song is the most beautiful version of "When You Say Nothing At All" by Allison Krauss Current: I'm obsessed with Eric Church right now My fav is "Talledega" Of course it isn't a complete Leanne list without Duran Duran, Journey, Elton John, Queen and Adam Lambert You're another one I'm not getting in the car with You've basically just told us how to do the RPea version of waterboarding on you. 😉🎧🎼

I have to break the rules/ show my hand: absolutely everything by Phil Collins, followed up with absolutely everything by Billy Joel.
PC has not been mentioned yet and only one song by BJ! I am ready to admit I am probably tone deaf so I am heavily influenced by lyrics. Soulful ones, ringing anthems and clever ones do it for me.
ETA: I have to add a sentimental favourite from the Eagles: my DH and I play Peaceful Easy Feeling on repeat the whole time every time we drive from the airport to our favourite place in the whole world- Wolwedans Private Camp in the Namib-Naukluft desert, Namibia. "I'm going to sleep with you in the desert tonight, with a million stars all around...." Google it, anyone who really wants a getaway with Dark Sky status.

If I had to choose one song to listen to for the rest of my life it would be ‘Bow River' by Cold Chisel. No, it’s not “The Greatest Song of All Time” but it’s my favorite song of all time. Ah, but which version? My favorite is Janis Joplin's. GREAT song. I can tell you what's not on my list: The Beetles! I think they are overrated. Wash your mouth out! I'm defriending you! At least spell their name correctly! I'll tell you what's NOT on my list: Hotel California Anything by ...... the Eagles I would agree with this, not on my list either. Unless the list you're talking about is "Greatest Songs of All time to Bore You Silly and Put You to Sleep!"

Nope, I agree that it's not possible to pick "the one". However, I'd just picked up the kids from school sometime last year when a song came on the radio and I got that FEELING. Pretty darn close to "the one" feeling and started crying like mad. My middle son started laughing and asked why on earth would I cry to an upbeat song. I immediately had him find the song and download it. I listened to it several times all the way home and cried each time. He kept laughing at me and finally said, "but mom you don't even like those things in the song". My answer got to him though and he now sees the song in a different light and can understand a little why I cry.
The song....Luke Bryan, "Huntin', fishin', and lovin' every day"!
My answer to my son "No, I don't like those things, but I sure do LOVE a man and a boy that does". Meaning my DH and him (DS)! That song is both of them to a T! THEY ARE THAT SONG in every way! I admit it's weird that it makes me cry, but that's the emotion that comes out every single time I hear it.

Cry of the Wild Goose 1st popular song learned Mister & Mississippi Green Green Grass of Home Delta Dawn I adore Tom Jones - one of the only people I've ever met who feels that way. I'm in my mid-50s, and excited to get to see him in person later this year. It'll be a first, and I hear that at 76, he's "still got it."

No such thing. Why doubt you just make me choose which one of my kids I love best? I'll tell you what's NOT on my list: American Pie (shudder) Hotel California Stairway to Heaven Anything by Elton John, Aerosmith, or the Eagles That's just a small sample of the things I hate that will inevitably end up on this list Heinous! Hotel California is the BEST. Also Green Day - Time of Your Life Ricki Lee Jones - On Saturday Afternoons in 1963 Ben Folds - The Luckiest AND Still Fighting It Yeah. I like sad songs.

This is pretty easy for me.
Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley version
Runners up are super hard for me to narrow down but here they are (in no particular order):
Amazing Grace - Harlem Gospel Choir version A Day in the Life, Let It Be and Hey Jude - The Beatles American Pie - Don McLean A Change Is Gonna Come - Sam Cook California Dreamin' - The Mommas & The Pappas Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers version Don't Look Bank in Anger and Wonderwall - Oasis Ave Maria - it sure I have a favorite version, there are so many good ones Clocks - Coldplay Bridge Over Trobled Water - Simon & Garfunkel No Church in the Wild - Jay Z and Kanye West Jesus Walks - Kanye West Video Games and National Anthem - Lana Del Ray Nothin' But a G Thang - Dr. Dre Heroes - David Bowie Overjoyed - Stevie Wonder Let's Get It On - Marvin Gaye Fly Me to the Moon - Frank Sinatra What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong (though I also love the IZ version) Squeeze - Tempted Allison and Everyday I Write the Book - Elvis Costello Freedom - George Michael In Bloom - Nirvana Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division Imagine - John Lennon Somewhere Over The Rainbow - Judy Garland Sweetness Follows - REM Big Poppa - The Notorious B.I.G. The Shins - Caring is Creepy and New Slang U2 - With or Without You Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John November Rain - Guns n Roses Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash Hurt - Johnny Cash version Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Diana Ross
Wow - I really couldn't narrow down my runners up! It's obviously apples and oranges comparing Ave Maria to Nothin But a G Thang to Love Will Tear Us Apart which is why it is so hard to narrow them down.

Hell, I can't pick a complete favorite from the last decade, let alone from all time.

God Only Knows, by the Beach Boys Pet Sounds is one of the best albums made. Brian Wilson is a genius. I have a softness for Abbey Road. "You Never Give Me Your Money" reminds me of the year I graduated college, along with The Pet Shop Boys' "Being Boring" Album and "Nevermind." Older songs? Nothing beats Cole Porter or Johnny Mercer. "Autumn in New York," "From This Moment On," "Night and Day," and "Memories of You." I also love "Moonlight In Vermont," although I don't live in Vermont. Such a mellow summer classic.
