I just finished grilling some hot dogs, and my preference is to warm the buns up for a few seconds in the microwave. I've gotten to be a bit snobby, in fact, and mentally turn up my nose a bit if some serves me from-the-package buns. In honor of the upcoming quintessential grilling holiday, I'm curious about everyone's preferences.
My first poll--hope I did it right!

We usually just throw the bag of buns on the table, but we tried something different yesterday and it was wonderful! I had just finished roasting some garlic, so I mixed up a little garlic butter and spread it on the buns. Hubby grilled them while the burgers were finishing. So delicious! Pretty sure we'll do it again soon.

I thought this was going to be about different buns entirely.

We do a bit more than warm the buns on the grill. I like them toasty! We had grilled hotdogs for lunch with grilled buns. From what I've heard New England hotdog buns are different than in the rest of the US. I'm going to have to research a bit now.
ETA: my quick visit to Google confirmed this...We always use New England style buns as we live here in New England!!!

If it's a large crowd, then bag of buns on the table. If it's just my family of four, then they get slightly toasted on the grill.

It depends on the type of bun and how fresh they are! If they are bakery buns (as opposed to white bread buns from the bread aisle/shelf) and just bought, I will just slice them and offer them as is.
If they are a few days old I will put them on the grill for a few minutes or butter them and grill them in a frying pan on my stove top.

We ask who wants a toasted bun and go from there. I like a toasted hamburger bun and prefer a raw hot dog bun.

I didn't answer the poll because I don't actually grill outdoors ... I fry, broil, or pan-grill indoors. But I do lightly toast the buns in the toaster-oven before serving. I don't like them plain.

Great question. , I am lazy so everyone is in charge of getting their own bun.

I like our buns toasted/grilled a bit, but if not then they just are served straight from the package. Don't like moist buns (hotdog buns people ), so I wouldn't steam them and don't think I'd ever microwave them.

EVERYONE just takes them straight out of the package. I have gotten used to it, but I hate it. I want my buns warm! Hamburger buns are great on the grill. Hot dog buns, I guess wrapped in foil on the grill or steamed might be my preference, but I just want them warm.
But yeah. Used to the janky "cold" buns everyone has. We do it too. Since no one I know except for me seems to care haha

I steam my hot dog bun (always Martin's Long Potato Roll) filled with shredded cheese; my husband skips the bun; & our teen prefers an unheated bun.

We slather ours in butter and toast them on the stovetop--usually nice and smushed to get a crispy golden brown. It never occurred to me to put them on the grill--that would certainly make more sense when everything else is cooked outdoors!

Hot dog buns - straight from the packet Burger buns - sometimes lightly grilled, sometimes straight from the pack - especially if they are super fresh and soft
When I say 'grilled' I mean what you would refer to as 'broiled' (I think).

I like soft buns. DH likes to over toast all bread products... Buns should not be crunchy.

We did ours yesterday since Dh is doing Ribs for the 4th. I like to tose them on the grill. I like the edges toasted . Dh is likes them traditionally plain.

I like them warm but not crispy. I put them in a heavy brown paper bag and put them in the oven on low while the barbequing is going on. They come out like they were fresh-baked.

I enjoy a toasted hamburger bun, but I've never seen that done with hot dog buns. Besides, once I throw on the mustard, ketchup, onions, and relish, the bun's just there to hold it together-- it doesn't really taste like anything.

I wrap them in foil and put them on the side of the grill while the burgers/dogs or sausages cook

I've gotten to be a bit snobby, in fact, and mentally turn up my nose a bit if some serves me from-the-package buns. I can't believe no Pea has come on yet to say you MUST make your own buns from scratch. Seems like the standards around here are really slipping. I'm sure sanctimommy will wander through to tell us about her homemade non-GMO kale buns any minute now...

We don't grill out but when I go to a party usually the buns are in the bag and you just take one and go from there. Usually everything else is only lukewarm anyway so what's the point of toasting the bun.
I did hamburgers at home yesterday - broiled - and I did not toast the buns. Sometimes I do if I think of it.
