I haven't been on a plane in about 10 years and hope to never have to fly again. The greedy airlines keep taking away passenger space to add more seats. It can't be comfortable for any one, recliners or non recliners or recliner haters

This was a column in the SF Gate by C.W. Nevious. And I think he has a point. All one has to do is read the responses on the various threads about this very subject the peas have had over the years to know there is no win win situation for either party. Both sides have valid points of why the seats should or should not recline. That being the case remove the bone of contention. As CW says have the seats fixed in a slightly reclined position. Problem solved.

It would certainly stop the bickering over reclining seats.

They want your seat completely upright for take off and landing, so fixing in a slight recline might not be acceptable. But I think they should not allow seats to recline more than a slight amount.

I think the airlines should just elimate the reclining feature. My poor DH and DD are tall and it's awful when someone reclines in front of them.

Oh you don't know what you're talking about Lynn. They don't recline enough to bother anyone; so say the Peas.

No, the device is not illegal on any airline, because they are not illegal. United and most major airlines prefer you not to use them, but United doesn't make laws, they can only make rules. The guy was within his rights to say no (that might make him a jerk, but not a criminal) The woman, however, committed an assault, and that is illegal. I thought you actually could be arrested for failing to comply with directives from a flight crew?

Only if it involves the safety of passengers and crew, and using the device doesn't do either. Now, if he started hitting the woman over the head with it, then he'd have a problem....

Thank you. I don't fly often enough to be up on things, but it seemed like I had heard something about that at some point.

Crazy. Not something any sane person would cause enough of a ruckus about to divert a flight.
I was on a not-quite-two hour flight the other week and some guy behind me kept shoving his knees into my lower back. Really didn't appreciate that very much. My seat wasn't reclined at any time during the flight. I pushed back with my body so it's not like he didn't realise what was happening. When I got up to leave the plane, I saw he had his laptop out and his knees were up close to the seat. I empathise that he was a tall man, not sure it means I should have two rocks intermittently sticking into my back.
Gilly.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread from a few days ago. But I was reading about the Miami to Paris flight that was diverted to Boston to arrest a passenger for interfering with the flight crew (punishable by 20 years). His arrest sounds like it was for arguing with the flight attendants and "grabbing her arm." Obviously an arrest doesn't equal a conviction, but it reminded me of this thread: CNN
