I'm not usually so witchy, but I do have a butter cookie recipe I won't share. We were invited for holidays with dh's extended family many years, and I always brought my decorated butter cookies with secret ingredient. Loved and gushed over by all. No big deal, until the year we were invited, and then uninvited, for Thanksgiving. After UN inviting us, a few days before Thanksgiving, Aunt emailed gushing about how fabulous my cookies were, and she wanted the recipe so she could make them for Thanksgiving. I couldn't bring myself to respond, let alone share the recipe.
So do you have a secret recipe you don't share??

I might not share the recipe in that circumstance but generally don't have any recipes I wouldn't share.

My husband's mother would not share recipes.
So I would just sit in the kitchen and wait. Her secret beef recipe: Lipton onion soup Mike high apple pie: she used flour instead of cornstarch. I have her rhubarb bar recipe All I need it the pecan log recipe.
I did hide a secret from her. Mile high meringue. I use extra whites.

Lol now I'm thinking of the Everybody Loves Raymond episode where MIL gave recipes but they were wrong so Debra couldn't cook as well as Marie!

There aren't any we won't share, but we eat very boring, bland food. Sometimes I would like food with a bit more flavour.

No. I think it's stupid and petty, especially since 99% of these recipes aren't even something the secret keeper came up with on their own.

used2scrap, why were you suddenly uninvited!? And I always give my recipes if asked, but I must admit, I prefer to just bring the dish. But what I've found is it's the cook, not the recipe that makes the dish. In other words, the recipe is just the beginning. Someone may use margarine when it calls for butter, use old inactive baking powder, and not use insulated cookie sheets, and end up with crappy cookies. So I just give it out.

No, I'm fine with sharing all my recipes. I got most of them from somewhere else anyway. I'll even share my tips and modifications.
But an ex of mine's grandmother kept her recipes secret. She made this orange spiced iced tea that everyone in their family loved, and she claimed it was passed down to her from her aunt with the promise that she'd never share it outside of the family.
It was mother-effing Constant Comment boxed teabags.
I recognized it from the first sip.
I'm pretty good at backwards engineering recipes anyway. If someone won't share, I can usually figure it out on my own if I want.

I have no problem sharing recipes but in your situation I wouldn't have given the recipe either! Why were you uninvited?

Around here is a story, it is maybe 25-30 years ago, at a very popular radio-quiz show with a very popular host, he chatted with people before the quiz about everyday stuff and this woman was so excited she told him her very secret cookie-receipe she wouldn't even share with the closest family 😂

I wouldn't share in that instance either!
I'll share whatever recipe I have, but usually I have tweaked the recipe beyond what is written down, so it's not actually the recipe I "use" 😂 then I've heard several times, "but when you make it, it tastes better" or something Iike that.

I have one. This dish my grandmother made, that a relative of hers created. Nana made me swear to keep it in the family because that's what her relative did before passing it on. I promised and have kept that promise (I only make the dish for family so I dont have to worry about being asked to share).

I give out recipes freely. A lot of times (as has been mentioned above) I think when people keep their recipe a secret, it's because they don't want to admit it's a box mix or pre-prepared item.
Once when my kids were very young (toddler/preschool), their little mom's day out program had a Thanksgiving luncheon for kids and parents. I signed up to bring homemade mac and cheese, which is something I normally make well from scratch. Well, being a mom of young kids, I got busy and forgot all about the luncheon. So the day of, I bought a huge pan of Stouffer's mac and cheese, heated it through, and put it in a casserole dish from home. People raved about this dang mac and cheese from the freezer section at the store. I was too embarrassed to admit what I had done, so I just smiled and said, "Family recipe."

Nope. I didn't invent my favorite recipes, so I don't feel proprietary about any of them.

My MIL wouldn't share a lot of her cookie recipes until she died. Everyone of the kids received recipe cards in an envelope after her death. Her reasoning was that these were "favorites" and the kids wouldn't feel they were as special if they were able to make them. Her oldest son does the same. He has his "secret" binder with recipes he won't share. Whatever..... I will share if asked. A few, I've told nieces that now that they now how to make their favorite recipe, they can be responsible for making them for the family gatherings. They've found how expensive or time consuming a couple are and have said they can't make them as good as I can.

Well, not in that case, but in general, why not? It seems ridiculous to me not to share. Look at how many times someone on here has said that someone passed away without writing down or passing along a recipe and now the family cannot have that treasured item.

I was going to say NO, that there weren't any recipes I wouldn't share, but now I am thinking about it yes I won't share anymore good family (my side of the family) recipes with my MIL anymore. I shared my stepmom's yummo carrot recipe with her and now I'm annoyed because now when she hosts family gatherings instead of having me bring them and having everyone rave over them, SHE makes them and enjoys the raves that everyone gives HER. She's just that kind of person. (Much like your Aunt except I would have been thrilled to be un-invited - your Aunt was pretty awful to do that to you and then ask for the recipe to boot! Yeah I would have had my mouth hung open too!!).

I usually tweak most recipes until the resulting dish is the way I like it. Many times I'll read a bunch of reviews for a new to me recipe, make it once as written and then adjust to my taste. For example, as a result of the recent chocolate chip cookie thread, I found a new recipe for soft chocolate chip cookies to try at Sally's Baking Addiction blog. Made it as written and they were good. DH raved about them. After I'd had a couple myself, I thought they would be even better with some pecans added, so next time I'll probably try adding a cup of chopped nuts to the dough at the end to see if I like them better that way.
I also usually have no problem sharing recipes with anyone. But if someone is looking to steal my thunder, I just might let them do their own research!

Most of what I cook can be found on Pinterest or in cookbooks anyway, I don't really make up my own recipes or anything. I'm a good cook but I don't really create new dishes most of the time so there's no reason I wouldn't point a guest or someone at a potluck or whatever to a recipe book I used. I don't have any thunder to be stolen.

I'll share any I'm asked for.
I do think it's weird that someone brings a super-secret-recipe to a gathering, then gets ticked when asked for the recipe.
A) If it's so special and a secret recipe, then don't bring it to a gathering because .... B) It rather appears that you are bringing the dish because you want to feel somehow special with all of the praise, oos & ahs and get a kick out of saying no to those asking for the recipe.
I find that odd. Very odd.
