I've never been a great breakfast eater, if I can stomach something it's usually around 10 or so. With gall bladder issues it's been worse, for 9+ months i've been waking up with 2-3 hours or more of extreme morning sickness and even the thought of food sends me heaving. I've been able to maintain drinking two bottles of peppermint water before I get out of bed and that helps settle it some but as far as food the best i've been able to do is nibble on a bar of some sort to try and start my day. I've attempted shakes and whatnot in the morning but I just can't seem to tolerate anything but water that early. Thank goodness I love water! lol
If left to hunger cues I just wouldn't eat. When I track, my 'typical' day would be nothing but water until around 4:30 then I have a snack (nuts, fruit, veggies & hummus, something handy) and then dinner around 8:30. Changing dinnertime isn't an option, i'd rather eat at a later time than to not have the entire family at the table each night so we schedule around that. Dinners are still kind of small but it is what it is.
Yesterdays dinner included 2 servings of roasted brussels sprouts, a green salad, 1/2 slice of garlic bread and a few bites of a pork roast. That was more than usual but it was tasty.
Unfortunately, even without eating much i'm still chubby- hoping that more calories and more balanced eating throughout the day will help to even it out and just help me be more balanced. Weight loss would be great but either way, i'm just looking to be healthier overall.
So, long story short, I need to up my fiber and give myself some kind of reassurance that i'm getting enough nutrients throughout the day without having to stuff myself and make myself feel ill.
I've tried fiber one bars, mojo bars and clif bars in the mornings and there were a few that were just funknasty. Anyone have a favorite to share? I hate paying so much for them and not knowing if i'm going to love or hate them. I'm munching on a white chocolate macadamia nut Clif bar now (yeah, same one since 8am) and it's pretty tasty and i'm a big fan of the coconut one too.
I need to research more to see what the healthiest options are and i'd really like to start making my own. Less prepackaged stuff is always best right. Got a great recipe to share? Any other tips for getting a morning meal in without getting sick? The thought of an egg sandwich makes me all icked out until after 2pm, same thing with most hot breakfast items although sometimes mid morning I love a good bowl of grits or oatmeal with fruit.
I never thought i'd ask but help a chubby girl eat? ha

We are doing smoothies for breakfast at our house. I've found lots of recipes on Pinterest. Our favorite is a mango peach smoothie. I put in fresh spinach, frozen mangoes, frozen peaches, a fresh banana, coconut milk, a little honey, stevia sweetener and some ice. We are rushing out the door in the mornings during the week so I prep as much of it as I can beforehand so we can dump a baggie of ingredients in the blender, add what couldn't be prepped (usually the coconut milk, ice and honey) and drink it in the car. My DD is anti-breakfast unless it is fast food and I'll do that as a treat once a week or every other week but absolutely not daily. Smoothies are one of the few ways I can get her to eat something healthy. I mix it up and some days we will do blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, etc. We also like strawberry and banana smoothies.

I'm not a typical breakfast food person either, I'd be fine most days with just coffee. I've tried the KIND bars and they are pretty good, high in protein, they have nuts and chocolate - to me they taste like a candy bar.

Smoothies are an option, but recently I have discovered Quest Bars. They have about 20g protein and a dozen or so flavors. Maybe try them out to see if you like them....or not. What about yogurt? with granola or berries?

I'm not a breakfast person at all, especially during the week. (Now, going out for breakfast on the weekends is a totally different story! ) For the last year or so, I've been having Belvita's Breakfast Biscuits - the oats & chocolate flavor. I nibble on it over the course of an hour or so and it really does fill me up. They have 18 grams of whole grains and 5 grams of fiber. Not bad... Plus, it's like a big oatmeal chocolate chip cookie for breakfast!

I was going to suggest Quest bars as well. You can buy the singles at GNC.

Clif bars are just sugar. I would find a quality protein shake to have for breakfast, one that also has vitamins and no weird chemical names you can't pronounce or sucrose (splenda). Can you eat fruit first thing in the morning? Not eating until 4:30 is really slowing down your metabolism. Are you overindulging on the weekends? Going out to restaurants? That could be messing up your hard work during the week. No garlic bread please. Also try weight lifting, it will help with your metabolism. Think of your body like a car, it needs fuel to operate. Perhaps check out some books on gall bladder sensitive diets.

I'll definitely check into the links- I wish I could find something more salty without the sweet. I kind of eat around the chocolate but anything that is wet at all sets off my nausea. No yogurt or smoothies :/
I'm best with a packet of peanuts or something like that, i hate that so many of the bars try to be candy bars, I just want something on my stomach without the sweet. blech.

I can eat around 1/4 a piece of fruit before it gets warm and not so tasty or messy. Shakes are out. No chance. I'm not overindulging at all. If I feel like eating and can do so I do, if I can't I try to work around it so i'm at least staying hydrated. It's the same thing if we do go out to restaurants. A few bites and the kids finish whatever I ordered, not enough to throw anything off. I'm keeping the garlic bread. 1/2 slice isn't going to kill me off and i'm sure I can fit it into a balanced diet. I'm looking for fuel that I can keep down before 5 pm, not necesarily to cut anything out. I lift weights on the norm, just not for the next 2 weeks, i'm on a 15 lb weight restriction :/

If you can eat peanuts, try a handful of almonds and berries. Not eating until late afternoon really does mess up your metabolism and make weight loss harder.

^^^^ this
You are not eating at the right times of the day. This may be way off base but you may need to retrain yourself to be able to eat in the morning. Just because you are not hungry or thirsty does not mean your body just doesn't need it. You need to eat earlier, not later. I don't think eating any type of energy bar is going to work for this. It sounds like your body has gone into starvation mode which makes it hold onto the fat cells that you already have. You have essentially killed your metabolism and you will have to kick start it back up.

Sounds like what my 17 yo DD experiences. If she tries to eat much at all in the morning, she gags. I will be watching this thread for ideas. I'm not all that hungry early in the morning either so I tend to eat something mid morning (I'm home most days) and then gradually increase calories as the day goes on. I think it's a good idea to try to find something you can stomach in the morning and spread the daily calories out. My DD can sometimes handle frozen waffles but that's about it.

I feel like i'm not using my big girl words and being understood. I think I need a nap. lol.
I WANT to eat. I'm not a picky eater, i'm not intentionally skipping meals and i'm not trying to lose weight.
I wake up, I drink water with peppermint essential oil in it, get dressed and then try to eat. If there is a solid food in my mouth I chew, swallow and then promptly barf. If I drink a smoothie I take a sip or two and then usually before I even get it down I throw up. i'm super queasy every morning but the best i've been able to do is to nibble on a bar or something for a couple of hours until my stomach calms down.
I'm not trying to lose weight, i'm just trying to eat. I'd love to pick up a piece of fruit and just eat it but I don't have time to throw up every single morning. On good days I can get a small meal in around 1-2:00 in the afternoon. I realize that is too late to start eating for the day so that's what i'm trying to correct.
My drs aren't sure what the issue is, they're working on it and hoping the gall bladder surgery fixes it. Their suggestion is to eat as much as I can as early as I can until we kind of figure it out.
The only thing i've found so far that stays down are bars because I can pull off a little piece and nibble on it throughout the morning. It's literally taking me 2-3 hours to get a full bar down. I'm looking for recipes or suggestions that can help me maximize the benefit of what I am able to keep down.
How do you retrain yourself to eat in the morning when all you can do is throw up? It's not as easy as waking up and forcing myself to eat, that just hasn't worked. I'm not sure what to try but would love tips or advice.

After my grandmother died earlier this year, my health tanked and I couldn't eat very much without throwing up. My appetite was completely gone and if I tried to eat a "normal" sized meal, I'd puke. One thing I did was find something I could tolerate and just work myself back up to eating normally. My doctor told me that you just can't push yourself to get better, particularly with surgery. Only time will heal (as the pun goes).
Another idea could be granola, a high fibre, high protein granola, that you can eat by the handful as you go through your day. But really, at this point, you may just want to go with what you can eat until things improve. It may not be the best thing, but at least it's something.

When I was morning sick and nauseous I found eating a few plain potato chips pretty much eliminated my nausea and I could then eat a normal meal. Just 4-5 chips was enough. I've since found that when I'm nauseous (ie, when I get migraines) that having a couple of chips helps reduce that nausea, too. Maybe it would work for you?
Or what about a protein, like some chicken, or even those chicken fingers that are real chicken, just breaded? Still pretty healthy.

Just thought of an idea...can you eat something (hard candy) with ginger in it first thing to settle your stomach? From reading your last post, it sounds exactly what my DD goes through.

I'm not a breakfast eater either and eat dinner late. After numerous attempts to force myself to eat in the morning, I decided to just go with what my body wants to do. On the occasional day I do fancy breakfast, I just eat my lunch - plain Greek yoghurt, fruit and a quarter cup of grape nuts. Take a look at my blog to find out what I've been up to

I eat 1/2 cup of grape nuts topped with fresh raspberries or strawberries every morning. Keeps me full, not so sweet & has fiber. I like the crunchiness!

I agree about needing to eat regularly to keep your metabolism up - think 5 small meals a day with protein at every meal. What about fruits and veges - veges lightly steamed. Or a small baked potato or serve of rice with a small amount of lean protein such as chicken (no skin). For breakfast I was actually going to suggest an egg - either boiled or scrambled (don't add too much milk) with a piece of toast (grain or wholegrain not white).
I always find ginger helps with nausea - what about some ginger tea?
Hope you see an improvement soon!
ETA Bananas can also help with nausea and they are rich in potassium.

Rather than bars, what about something like whole wheat toast with a smear of peanut butter? You can fold it into a sandwich and then just nibble on it. Maybe even add some thin slices of banana to the pb toast? It would keep for a while, you could nibble on it at will and you are getting some protein, carbs, fiber, etc. Definitely better for you than any of the highly processed protein bars and cheaper too.

Are you able to sip some plain chicken or beef broth until your stomach settles later in the day? Maybe with a little bit of rice mixed-in? At least you would get a tiny bit of protein and carbs. I second trying some ginger tea to help settle your stomach. Or if you can take a couple of powdered ginger capsules with water.
I hope you find the cause and/or a cure soon!

I wonder if the peppermint water is making your nausea worse? Is there any correlation to your drinking that and when the nausea started?
I hope you figure it out soon, it sounds miserable!

I am not a morning eater either - I can't stand anything soft or "liquidish" in the morning, so no smoothies. yogurt, eggs, peanut butter, etc.
I eat a bowl of dry cereal in the morning, usually plain cheerios or shredded wheat - probably not the best breakfast, but it's not a lot of calories, and it's what I can stomach.

How about plain cereal? Maybe try a few squares of wheat chex or oatmeal squares..dry.

Having severe reflux issues I never eat within 4-5 hours of going to bed. If I do I get severe stomach and chest pains during the night and in the morning wake up nauseous. Also, certain foods including heavy/fatty meats, vegetables like lettuce, raw or lightly cooked brussel sprouts, broccoli, and fat like cheese sauces or anything fried really aggravates the situation.
I am never hungry in the morning and do not eat anything until around 11AM. Then it is usually a yogurt or cottage cheese with fruit. If I am lucky and not too busy, lunch at 1PM then a light dinner at 6-7, then that is it for the day.
Hope you get your issue addressed and feel better soon.

Look up Alton Brown - Good Eats on foodnetwork.com. He did two shows about making protein/granola/fruit bars of your own, the recipes are super easy and they are much better for you. The pre made bars have lots of crap in them they try to pass off as nutrition. My DH makes his own protein bars. Oh, and if you like chocolate and peanut butter, here is a recipe for quinoa bars that are out of this world good and SO easy to make! DH makes a big batch and freezes half of them. skinnyms.com/quinoa-protein-bars/

I have GERD due to a hiatal hernia and peppermint is a big trigger for that. Have you tried eliminating that to see if it helps? I am not a breakfast fan either and putting heavy breakfast food in my stomach makes me very nauseous. I hate yogurt, but recently I have started eating Greek yogurt every morning, usually with a piece of fresh fruit.

I'm so sorry your mornings are like this! My suggestion would be to try some saltine crackers, just nibble them slowly. Then as you are able try the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast)until you feel better. Those foods are easy to digest and are doctor recommended after the stomach flu.
