I was given a Starbucks ceramic tumbler. I was liking it until I read the instructions it came with-- it states that the tumbler is hand wash only, and do not microwave. Really? for a ceramic cup? Seems odd. Do you have one and can you microwave it and put it in the dishwasher?

It probably gets too hot when heated to be labeled as microwave safe.

Typically, I might ignore the handwash admonition, but looking at the ceramic tumblers currently online, several of them are double-walled, and I wonder whether, when you heat them in the microwave, any gas (air) between the two walls expands and creates a risk of exploding. That might be why they don't belong in the dishwasher either-- gets too hot.

I have a ceramic Starbucks tumbler. I love it, cuz it has an adorable mermaid painted on it. I put it in the microwave (didn't read the care instructions it came with). Turned the microwave on and that beyotch of a mermaid started shooting spark at me out of her bra!!! Quick turned off the microwave and was dumb enough to grab the cup and got a burn on my thumb. That shiny gold bra of hers was metallic and got super hot as well as shooting sparks.

I have a ceramic SB's tumbler that we microwave and put in the dishwasher. It has a red lid and a decorative (3D pattern/texture to the actual ceramic) cream base, but no designs painted on it. Maybe that's why it's safe.

My guess is that it's not microwaveable for the reason that tuva42 said - gold bras shooting sparks! My guess as to why it's nor dishwasher safer is that maybe the decoration will fade or come off in the heat of the dishwasher ... I had a really cute "ELF" cup that is NOT dishwasher safe ... One of my DDs did this dishes (bless them!) but my ELF cup went in the dishwasher and came out a bubbled, faded mess!! :-(
