That's all I could think when I saw the footage of the people wading in waist high water: "what about snakes and gators?"

Nope, just nope. This is why if I were physically able, I've had tacked a tent to my roof. Talk about sheer terror.

That's all I could think when I saw the footage of the people wading in waist high water: "what about snakes and gators?" They're probably actually pretty safe from alligators in general right now. I don't think alligators want anything more to do with people than people want to do with them today. (Do NOT quote me on that. I will disavow it and claim I've been a victim of a French Teenage Hostage Situation.) Snakes and fire ants on the other hand? Yeah. You're free game for them. (Yes. Fire ants in the water. See the long thread asking Texas peas to check in for more info.)

Oh Heeeeellllll No. Since I get creeped out by lizards on my deck, I doubt I'd do any better with an alligator lazily resting there. EEK! Not to mention that whole, "I like my limbs intact" thing.

ETA: i'll take the outrageous housing market too over that other stuff. LOL

I heard them talking about gators in the waters flooding Texas on the news this morning. The last thing you want to worry about right now. Yikes!

Reminds me of a TV series called "River Monsters" which was looking into claims of bull sharks in fresh water rivers in Australia, one theory was that the sharks swam over the top of a dam after a flood situation. Honestly, the whole series would keep you out of water. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_Monsters

Last winter I saw a meme of "why do I live where the air hurts my face? This is why I live where the air hurts my face" with pictures of gators, snakes, etc. I wish I'd saved it because I would totally post it in response to this!

Sometimes I am very thankful to live in my tiny country with temperate summers, cool winters with moderate snowfalls, no earthquakes or hurricanes, and no predators other than the occasional adder in remote parts of the country. No fire ants, no killer bees, no huge spiders or snakes, and definitely no feckin' alligators!

I read a New Yorker article several years ago about how storms + exotic animals in Florida = scary new snakes in FL.
I also listened to a Criminal podcast about a guy in Louisiana who keeps a tiger at his truck stop.
Yeah, if the fire ant stuff yesterday wasn't unnerving enough . . .

No fire ants, no killer bees, no huge spiders or snakes, and definitely no feckin' alligators! My husband has a list of places he'd like to live for awhile, and Scotland is one them. Despite not being near the sea, we still see some devastating floods from time to time around here, and some "nuisance" flooding quite regularly, but I have never seen anything like the pictures of Texas right now. I've seen photos of widespread waters in other places--waist high, even person high, but the heights of the waters in the photos we're seeing now astound me. And to add alligators or fire ants to the mix? I can scarcely imagine. SaveSave
