Have the winds/rain started already? I saw a blurb at the bottom of one of the news channels saying 25k people are without power already?

Reading this thread has been like watching a slow countdown to an awful event! (((Hugs))) and prayers for you all! It is. And that's the wonder of living in this day and age. There actually is warning with a countdown. On 7 Sep 1900, people on Galveston island were unaware of what the next few hours would bring. Sep. 8 brought a 15 foot storm surge that covered the island (8 feet above sea level) with a good 7 feet of water. Only those upstairs in the 2nd and 3rd stories of the sturdiest structures survived. The actual total death toll is unknown, but it was somewhere between 6,000-12,000 human souls. As hard as this is to watch, as difficult as it is to live through, PEOPLE WILL LIVE THROUGH IT. Keep perspective, pray for peace of heart, prepare for the worst and hope for the best. I often wonder about early settlers and natives in these hurricane-prone areas. They had no doppler radar to find out a storm was coming. Could they tell by a change in the barometric pressure (even though they wouldn't have had instruments to measure it)? I still remember a Little House on the Prairie show about an unexpected blizzard that came through without warning (the telegraph wasn't working right or something like that) and kids were lost in the storm. So thankful for the technology we now have! ETA- I'm also curious how Disney, Universal, and all the other attractions in Orlando are preparing. I know it's in the middle of the state, but they're bound to get a lot of wind and rain no matter where Irma goes.

Could they tell by a change in the barometric pressure (even though they wouldn't have had instruments to measure it)? One person on Galveston island did notice a drop in barometric pressure, but did not understand exactly what that meant in time. I think he survived, I don't think his family did, and that's how modern measuring began. **From memory. If I'm not 100% accurate, I apologize. @devildog - Yes, the winds in the outer bands are reaching parts of Florida already. Also.... as it looks like Irma will be hugging the west coast of Florida, the spin of the hurricane will give the most wind, rain and surge to the lower left (SW) quadrant of the storm instead of the upper right (NE) quadrant that we normally see.

Ha. Score one for pms.
The only thing I don't really have is ice. I've been freezing water bottles, but didn't have many.
So this morning my pms monster started whispering about ruffles cheddar cheese and sour cream potato chips. I told it to shut up, there's enough junk food in my house for an entire stoned fraternity house. Yet the pms monster kept whispering and finally to shut it up, I ran to publix. They are closing at 3...so I figured it was now or suffer when I couldn't go. Walked in, grabbed my chips, grabbed extra coffee (on sale, I was there, why not...) turned up the next aisle where they were just starting a line for ice the guy was wheeling out!!
I got my ice, I am officially 100% ready. All thanks to pms. lol

Live in North Florida. Looks like it will go right over the top of us Monday afternoon as a category three. Our county has issued mandatory evacuation orders but we aren't leaving. We have food, water, generator, gas, protection and a block home. We are boarding things up now. On top of all the loss of material things, I'm afraid we are going to be without power for days and days...............we've done it before but it's no fun. A bath becomes a luxury. I'm not concerned about food or water so I feel blessed. Our little town with one red light was CRAZY yesterday with people heading north. I felt so sorry for them.

Thank you. You're such a calm, reassuring voice in all of this. They are now considering leaving and going to a friend's house in Melbourne. I praying they do! Thank you. My fiancé's mom lives in Bradenton. He talked her into evacuating Thursday. She is so glad she did and she's in Alabama. I wasn't as lucky with persuading my parents. They think they still have time. If you've never lived through this personally, you just don't understand how mentally difficult it is to prepare to evacuate. There's a process you have to go through to get to the acceptance that your life is in so much danger that you must just up and leave all but the very most important things behind. Do not discount the huge impact the seriousness everyone around them is and has been taking this storm. That plays an important part in coming to terms with having to leave. Also, I want you to understand that people are not telling you everything they are thinking or planning. If they tell people one thing and then their plans by necessity change, then suddenly they are answering 100 questions instead of being allowed to focus their attention on their own immediate needs. (This is my personal experience.) Continue to try to remain calm. Breathe slowly and deeply. If you take any medications for anxiety, take it. Pray. Meditate. Go out and take a walk in the sunshine. Leftturnonly - You Rock, my dear.

I gotta vent, because I can't do it anywhere else but here, but I'm ready to kill my husband. It's not his fault. He was supposed to have his radioactive iodine treatment this week (which has been postponed) and he's been off his thyroid meds. But he is a hysterical old lady right now. I know, I know, his levels are out of whack which is causing the depression and the anxiety, and I'm as patient as can be, but I just want him to pull it together right now. My neighbor and I both offered him a xanax! It's completely out of character for him, and all I can do is stay calm and understand.
I think I just talked into taking half of one and to take a nap. At least watch a few downs of football and get his mind off things. Everything that is done can be done, and we've still got several hours before it hits.
Vent over, back to reality. Thanks for obliging me.

I think we all have some vents at this point. We are getting constant gloom and doom on tv (pretty much all local channels are now doing wall to wall coverage) and all this waiting is making us crazy.
So vent away. The only calmness in my world is a couple of cats who have decided that the cooler is the ONLY PLACE THEY CAN SLEEP.

It is easy to be distracted and calm in the flurry of preparation phase. Sitting and waiting, especially with this storm and the ever changing track and intensities, must be beyond unbearable. Thinking of everyone.

I'm hoping that your MIL's flight was able to get out today. Yes, we got her on one of the last flights out of Fort Lauderdale on Friday night. I have a lot of family and friends still in various places in Florida. Some are staying in their homes, some in hotels elsewhere and some with friends/family in other parts of the state.

The comic relief in my world right now is 2 cats thinking they can walk and play on a tile-insert table when the tiles aren't there. We moved our patio table into the living room, but boxed the tiles. It's a freaking jungle gym for them now and they are fascinated. Silly cats. One is 20lbs. His attempts at Cirque de Cat have not been pretty, lol. Meri-Lyn - vent away, girl. I've got some of my own that I could unload for sure! I do hope your DH finds his calm soon.

My parents are in Sun City Center, South of Tampa. They've prepped as much as they can, but it's going to be a tough couple of days. We're keeping the weather channel on, but feel pretty helpless all the way up here in New England.
And to think, they moved so they didn't have to deal with the snow anymore. I'd take a snowstorm any day over this. Damn.

Arrived in Pensacola safely. Roads weren't that bad at all, took us about 6 and a half hours with a couple of stops for toilet breaks and gas. DH and DD got out fine this morning, and are currently on their transatlantic flight to London.
Cat was not amused at being in his carrier all day. He's hiding under the hotel bed lol.
