We're heading to Jacksonville and then re-grouping to see where this is going. NO idea if we shd hug the coast and go up to family in SC or NY, or even head west to go to Louisana, etc......... Any ideas? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) TIA!

Stay in Jacksonville. The storm would have to take a sharp easterly turn at this point to do a lot of damage there. If you have a safe spot there, I wouldn't try to go anywhere else. At this point, the westerly turn that is making the Tampa area unsafe has the potential to effect the panhandle so you don't want to drive through that.

Oh, but ... don't take my word for it. Listen to the weather professionals and evaluate your needs then decide.

Just checking in. We're still doing last minute preps - all the windows are boarded, save the French doors that we still need to go in and out of. Those will get boarded this afternoon.
All possible missiles outside have either been brought in or secured. We don't have any trees on our property to worry about crashing down on us, so that's good. Plenty of food and water and my addiction to small appliances will most likely come in handy - with those and the generators, I'll be able to cook pretty much anything.
DH has run out to grab a few last minute things, then we'll knock out the rest of the prep. Once the kids get off work and everyone is home for good, we'll close and brace the garage door and then it's hunker down time.
Stay safe, everyone!

A buddy of mine works at the Temple Terrace Publix, they are closing at noon. (Stores here were originally to close at 8pm.)

@bergdorfblonde - Safe travels. Sounds like you're heading in the right direction. mom26 & anxiousmom - Even when it gets dark and you start feeling isolated while you're hunkered down inside, we'll still be here thinking about you.

Thank you. My parents are close by and I could go there, but whatever I get, they will too. And I couldn't take my kitties (although if I even hinted that I was scared they would let me) so I am here alone. It's comforting to think of all the prayers and good thoughts being offered. *love*

I'm absolutely sick. My parents are in Charlotte county. They thought it was going east. They are now in mandatory evacuation zone and not leaving. They are too afraid to get stuck on the road. They are in their late 70's and don't feel well. AND my mother didn't buy enough supplies. (She said Publix is closed until Tuesday.) They are usually quite sensible and prepared but I really think they thought it would turn and all would be well. I could hear fear in my mom's voice. They said they will go to a shelter "if need be". Ugh.

And that's the wonder of living in this day and age. There actually is warning with a countdown. On 7 Sep 1900, people on Galveston island were unaware of what the next few hours would bring. Sep. 8 brought a 15 foot storm surge that covered the island (8 feet above sea level) with a good 7 feet of water. Only those upstairs in the 2nd and 3rd stories of the sturdiest structures survived. The actual total death toll is unknown, but it was somewhere between 6,000-12,000 human souls. As hard as this is to watch, as difficult as it is to live through, PEOPLE WILL LIVE THROUGH IT. Keep perspective, pray for peace of heart, prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

This is the situation of all my best friends in Tampa. I've been telling all of them since mid-week to come to my house in MS and they thought they'd be okay. One of them posted a picture this morning of the hurricane track passing right over his house and I've been crying ever since.

Try hard not to panic. This is why it's best to get out when you can get out beforehand if that is an option; so that people who didn't or couldn't get out beforehand will be able to use any shelters there as needed.

The weather will be steadily deteriorating, but they can still make it to someplace safer. Many homes have been built to withstand the wind. It's the water that will be the most immediate threat for those safer structures in the Tampa area. And, there are shelters which they can turn to as a last resort. Try to be calm. I know it's near impossible, but realize that they are aware of the danger and there are steps they can take to protect themselves. It's a good time to pray, both for their safety and for your own peace of heart.

One thing that the weather people keep emphasizing is that you don't have to go far, just get away from the coast. As leftturnonly only said, they still have time to get a shelter where they will be in a better place, with people who will know what to do. And also one thing that has been emphasized is that the shelters are fully staffed with limited medical staff and a police presence. People saw what happened during Katrina and are scared to go to the shelters, but Florida has the shelter thing down to a science and they take it seriously. Have your parents go to a shelter-bring snacks and water if they have it, but most of the shelters will have limited amounts. Just as a reference for everyone, here is a list of county by county shelters: floridadisaster.org/shelters/

They need to get on it, but they have time to pack up snacks, water, change of clothes or two, pillows/lines and entertainment and get to a shelter. That link I posted has the list of Charlotte county shelters that are open. I know it is scary. I worry about my parents too...and they are just on the other side of the county. My dad has been calling himself General Generator...they are boarded up with tons of supplies, plenty of gas for the generator and will be safe as kittens. But gosh I still worry. And likewise they worry about me. It is the nature of love of family and friends.

Thank you. You're such a calm, reassuring voice in all of this. They are now considering leaving and going to a friend's house in Melbourne. I praying they do! Thank you. My fiancé's mom lives in Bradenton. He talked her into evacuating Thursday. She is so glad she did and she's in Alabama. I wasn't as lucky with persuading my parents. They think they still have time. If you've never lived through this personally, you just don't understand how mentally difficult it is to prepare to evacuate. There's a process you have to go through to get to the acceptance that your life is in so much danger that you must just up and leave all but the very most important things behind. Do not discount the huge impact the seriousness everyone around them is and has been taking this storm. That plays an important part in coming to terms with having to leave. Also, I want you to understand that people are not telling you everything they are thinking or planning. If they tell people one thing and then their plans by necessity change, then suddenly they are answering 100 questions instead of being allowed to focus their attention on their own immediate needs. (This is my personal experience.) Continue to try to remain calm. Breathe slowly and deeply. If you take any medications for anxiety, take it. Pray. Meditate. Go out and take a walk in the sunshine.

I-75 backed up in Pasco/Hernando and around Gainesville. US 19 and the Suncoast are clear.
GasBuddy is reporting that out of 7000 stations, less than 200 have gas.
ETA: 400 extra cots ordered for the USF Sundome.
