@bergdorfblonde I say go for it! Maybe you ended up there for a reason. I can't speak to Spanish Fort but I think AL has some wonderful, nice people. They're southern and that's important in my book. Generally Southerners are nice, hospitable, well-mannered and would do just about anything for you. Do it! I know how much you dislike where you are now so why not?!
I'm glad ya'll weathered Irma okay. Did your area have damage or flooding?

The anticipation was the worst! I might evacuate next time just to save myself from it. Yep. Sweet Home Alabama.... I can't help but sing it every time I drive through. If it fits your family as well as you described, than I think you have every chance of being happy there. FWIW - I've thought about you every time I saw news of Jacksonville flooding and I was hoping that you hadn't stopped there. Can't tell you just how relieved I am that you kept going! If I were in your shoes, and my shoes look a whole lot like yours at the moment, I'd jump on the deal. Get the discount now for the 2 bedroom with the written understanding that it will be applied to the appropriate 3 bedroom apartment when it opens up. Tell them your needs and sit there quietly while they rattle on. Being noncommital tends to make them work a little harder for your business and that's when they start telling you what they can really do.

UPDATE: Glad most of you made out okay! When you heard that a storm is THIS massive, you leave!!! We left and headed to Pensacola (I liked it there), but, still not safe enough. Were going to head to Louisana, but wound up in Spanish Fort, Alabama. Let me tell you, we LOVE it here!!!! After being here for a few days, we decided to check out a few apartments. I checked out doctors and my ocularist is here (very important!). My son got offered a supervisor manager position at Kohl's here! He came n with me, started speaking and theny said they needed the position (full time, benefits, etc.). It's what he's wanted for THREE long years, but they keep stringing him along!! He LOVED this! Its much more empty, but he'd get the position he's wanted. No brainer!! They said that there are jobs for my daughter very closeby (animal boarding hotels/any animal based jobs). It's more cosmopolitan here. I could drive the roads. My doctors are here!!!! Beautiful housing (same price as ours in FL). Room to grow! If we booked it now, we'd save $1400. We'd have 2 months to move in, but it's only a 2 bedroom vs. 3 bedroom. They said the 3 bedroom (1st floor--necessity!!) would open up soon (complex is huge). PROS: MANY more job opportunities. More history here. More cosmopolitan. Nicer people. Safer driving. Good roadways that I could drive! Better food.. Same pricing for housing. CONS: We'd lost the $1400 promotional amount unless we book it tomorrow. It's for a 2 bedroom with lanai vs. the 3 bedroom we need. They cd move us into the 3 bedroom as soon as it's available. Should we do it?? ANY FEEDBACK ON ALABAMA? This is my 1st time there, but the people seem suite and I'd love to move!! Sounds exciting! What have you go to lose??

Peaing to see if any Florida peas are here tonight! Jen Here!! We were going to wait it out here. Spent a lot on provisions and stocked up. We weren't allowed to board up the windows (it's an apartment) and they don't have plantation shutters, so this scared me. When I saw how bad it was getting, I asked DH if we should get out and he agreed, so we did. We just drove, up north and west. Went to Pensacola the first night, and the storm still seemed LARGE and BAD, so we headed towards Louisana. He was tired (he's recovering from cancer treatment for bladder cancer, again), and we landed in Alabama ( Spanish Fort). It was nice; really nice!!!!!!! We stayed for 4 nights total......... We walked around the neighborhood and visited some apartment complexes. SAME price as FL, but so much more to offer. We could have signed today and could have gotten $1450 off, but D29 isn't sure if she's moving with us or moving out on her own. We're ready to do this. There seem to be MANY more job opportunies than FL, and the people seem very nice. Can't explain it other than I feel very much "at home" there. I could see living there for 1-2 years.. I DO want to end up back in NY though........ It took us *10* hours to drive back to FL!!! It's nuts!!!!!!!!! People are SO on edge!! I'm scared. Gas stations are a place where people show their short tempers!!!!!! Not enough gas, and people waiting. I get it, but it's scary!! I spent $45 on gas that I didn't need (I get regular and this was high grade). Ugh! No bottled water to be found. Roads are crazy. People are on edge................ This was a horrific storm for most of FL! We're checking out that place in Alabama to see if we cd move there. Seems much nicer and more to do! No brainer!

I'm glad ya'll weathered Irma okay. Did your area have damage or flooding? THANK YOU!!! Makes sense!! About the destruction of Irma, OMG!!!!!!!!!!! This was so huge!! It took us 10 hours to drive home (normally a 7 hour drive). There were blacked out areas without power. There was a HUGE police presence. There were tons of linemen working on restoring power. There were roads closed. Most stores/restuarants, etc., were closed. Some areas were ghost towns! We saw lots of debris, but a lot of it was already cleared out somewhat! We didn't seem to have too much flooding here (near Tampa), but a lot of traffic lights were out, trees fell, and it was a mess. Stores were't stocked. We came home to things all okay, sans some things that just fell down. My shower curtain rods fell (??). Some things fell off of tables, but that's it. Some food rotted b/c power was out........ All in all, I'm glad we left. It was too scary to be here without plantation shutters, being able to board up our windows, and feeling unsafe. No thanks! Nothing was worth that, so we all got up and left, and took our 5 cats on a journey (they were all really well-behaved!). It was a decent trip but we're all burnt out with worry and stress! Still, we're blessed. We're fine.

It took me 6 hours to drive back to Jax from Pensacola yesterday. House seems to be ok, landlord will be over tomorrow to double-check. I am exhausted and feel like I have been hit by a truck. It's been a really stressful and emotional week, and I'm glad to be home.
I'm glad everyone else appears to be ok too x

Bumping this back up ...I'm glad we all made it through but are any other Irma peas still dealing with the aftermath? We did not have any real property damage after the storm. For several days everything was ok but then the flooding started about 1 mile north of us along Shingle Creek in Florida. The local senior village and assisted living facility had to evacuate hundreds of people. We were put on alert to be ready to evacuate by the county. Thankfully that never happened but now as the water recedes...the SMELL!! OMG! it is like nothing I have ever experienced - and I once left a raw pork roast in my car by accident for several days. I was sure my neighbors would contact CSI, Criminal Minds or SVU (lol) that time. The news is running story after story about the foul smell but it fails to adequately describe just how horrible it is. My car window is broken and won't roll down..THANK GOD!! Even with all the windows up the smell permeates everything.. and the 90 degree heat doesn't help. Any other Irma peas with any (not so serious and kind of funny) lingering aftermath issues?
