My mom left early this morning after they started closing schools and businesses in her area. She is out of Florida, but I have two dear friends who have to stay behind in the same area. One works at a children's hospital and one is an administrator at an Alzheimer's unit. They will not be able to leave but have sent their families out of the state.

Your friends are doing extremely important work right now. They will be evacuated by air if and when the time comes. Try not to worry too much about them. Think about white light and send it their way.

A friend of mine said this hurricane needs everyone to feel forgiveness. So, I'm sending out forgiveness to all who are open to receive, and I ask for all of you to do the same.

I've been so focused on Harvey, and on Irma hitting the islands and Florida that I didn't process which parts of Georgia it's going to hit. Such as the town where my ds lives!! He is right on its path! So of course I texted him. He said "Mom, we're prepared." I said "how so?" He said... "we've taken photos for insurance, we have a couple hundred gallons of water (there are four of them), non-perishable food for four for a week, MREs for probably a week after that, batteries, flashlights and lanterns, charcoal for grilling, all cats are inside already, all loose stuff outside has been moved inside or tied down, and we have toilet paper, milk and bread." (lol that last part is a dig at us up here in Northern VA...those are the things everyone rushes out to get). So..it sounds like they're prepared. There's no evacuation where they live although ds said they were talking about evacuating Savannah which isn't far away. Ds's school has cancelled classes. Oy.

Oh my, now GA, SC, and NC are all under states of emergency also. This thing is a monster. Just heard that we (SC Upstate) could have over 60 mph winds and up to 12 in. of rain. I know that's nothing compared to 185 mph and feet of rain, but that's severe for us. Everyone stay safe!

A very good friend of my sister moved to South Miami 3 weeks ago with her DH and two children from the UK. Her DH is on a job assignment for two years.... mother nature is giving them a nice welcome Girls started school last week and it shut yesterday. The principal advised them to evacuate so they're leaving tonight on a flight to LA. Coming from the UK they have no experience of anything remotely resembling what is expected in the next few days but everyone has been so helpful with advice on the best course of action. They're renting and her landlord has been so good and taken care of everything regarding the house. Fortunately, in some way, their personal things ( apart from what they took with them on the plane) haven't arrived yet so they didn't have much of that to take care of. Her poor mother is worried to death about it all. Stay safe all of you.

Savannah? Oh dear- DD1 went to SCAD and has friends there. A friend of mine is there now visiting her DD who's a student at SCAD. I guess it's a good thing my friend is there now- I know she'd be so worried if she were at home in Alaska.

Crazy. I will say one thing, lots of people are taking this seriously. Publix is completely wiped out of everything that even looks like a staple. Lines at gas stations. Water is pretty much a no go. They have closed all state offices for Friday, and depending on where this thing goes, Monday will be a possibility here. I am in central Florida. We are at least not in the straight path any more, the storm has shifted east. If it stays like this, we will still get some serious wind/rain. =\ (ha, leaving that frowny thing there...the cat walked across my keyboard and left that, as I guess, his feelings about the storm. ) So today's lesson? Don't hit up an empty Publix with PMS. You end up with a lot of crap like M&Ms, chocolate donuts, and Little Debbie Swiss Rolls. On the other hand, I do have food. Gas. Cash. Cooler. Other hints from someone who has been through storms. Those plastic totes you pack you crap in? Clean one or two out, stick in the tub and fill it up. Tubs sometimes slowly drain, the plastic tubs hold the water and you can put a lid on it to keep it fresh. Hit up Staples and Office Depot for water, snacks and plastic bags. If you need batteries, check out places like Auto Zone and other places like that. They always have them. The one I was in last night had several buggies filled with different types. Wash all your clothes ahead of time. Start freezing water in freezer ziplocks. You will have ice for the cooler and fresh water when it melts. . Of course the standards have all been covered. My biggest whine?? If I lose power, I will have zero phone charging capability. That is going to be an issue. My phone is through the cable company and that means that it will go without the power. My lighter thingy in my little truck doesn't work so no charging in the car. Inability to communicate is a problem.

We are in Central Florida and my kids and I are evacuating. We leave Friday morning. School has been canceled indefinitely and I am not taking any chances. The pets are going to a friend's house and we are getting out of here! I hope everyone stays safe and follows precautions.

People here are preparing more/sooner than I've seen before. Stores are out of bread, canned food, batteries, flashlights, water, gas cans, generators...and we're still days away from when/if Irma turns this way. It's nerve wracking watching and waiting and trying to make decisions.

I work for a private aviation company, and we had almost 200 flights book out of the Florida area in the past 24 hours. That is a record for our company. I think, because Harvey is so fresh in everyone's mind, most people aren't messing around.
Thoughts are with all of those in Irma's path. I've seen pictures of the damage from St. Maarten airport... The damage she is leaving behind is astounding.
Stay safe, Peas!!

Any idea when it is supposed to hit S Florida?
Dh wouldn't believe the news about the storm until today. We got MIL a flight but not until Sat am. I am afraid that may be too late. She is in the Fort Lauderdale area.

melissa is your MIL flying out of Miami? Call the airport and check to see when the airport is closing. I called American Airlines today, the airline we're using Friday morning, and the agent said the Miami airport is closing, but I didn't ask the time because we're flying out of Orlando. You might want to call and check. The hurricane is supposed to hit Miami around 2pm Sunday, according to spaghettimodels.com

I'm in NE FL. I did my grocery run today, and have a full tank of gas. DD and DH fly out on Saturday morning - she starts college in the UK and he is going to settle her in. If it looks bad for Jax, I will be packing up the car, DS and the cat and heading north on the I 75 after they leave. Is there a possibility the airport will close ahead of the storm? I know that's north Florida, but it's something to think about. And Saturday is leaving it awfully late. Oh, I just saw that the Jacksonville mayor has said, "If you can leave, please do." Haven't read this whole thread yet, so maybe you post again, but I think you need to be looking at plan B. If Jacksonville mayor is urging evacuation, I think there's a very good chance the airport will close. I really don't think you can "wait and see" until the weekend.

I see the subject of airports closing came up right above my post. Remember that airlines want ALL their planes OUT of any possible danger. So you cannot wait. Melissa, I think Saturday will be too late. Even if an airport doesn't close, expect massive cancellations. And that will be before the storm hits.
I'm sitting here safe and sound in Washington, but this storm has me really freaked out. This just feels bad.
To those of you choosing not to evacuate, can you please explain why? Can't remember if I already said in this thread that my friend (of 47 years) in Delray Beach is a nurse who is on the roster of personnel who are first back at the hospital after the hurricane. I understand cases like this, of course. But if you can evacuate and choose not to, I'd really like to hear your reasoning. My DD and I were talking and watching videos of the storm last night. If we lived in Florida I'd have been evacuating overnight yesterday, way ahead of the storm. I have NO desire to see and hear those winds in real life. Florida is one place we might move to, even with the hurricanes. We can't afford to live here once DH retires. Maybe we'll change our minds about Florida after Irma.

LA Times is reporting that American Airlines is shutting down flights out of the Miami area by Friday afternoon. Many airlines are waiving flight change fees. melissa, maybe you can get an earlier flight for your MIL. People seem to be taking this seriously after seeing the aftermath of Harvey. My thoughts are with you all. Stay safe everyone!

Savannah here. I'm getting a little freaked out. I stayed for Matthew, with no regrets. My job now requires me to be there (EMS dispatch). I work this weekend and will stay over until. Will be worried about my house, but it's just stuff. Going out tomorrow for food, water and gas, hopefully.
Stay safe, everyone!

We just spent most of our last day of vacation trying to book her a flight. We'd pick a flight and go to the screen to pay and it would be gone. This was the last seat on this flight and, as it is, it is for Providence. We live between NYC and Philly. There was nothing coming to our area.
She is supposed to fly out of Fort Lauderdale.
I laughed at the news about more airlines not increasing fares. So easy to say when your flights are completely booked! We watched prices going up on some today.
I think she will be ok where she is. It's a condo in a brick building in a 55+ community. She does live alone so we worry. She was so happy that we were working on getting her a flight. Sigh.
And the only reason dh finally believed me was that his friend from St.Maarten sent him photos this morning (friend lives here but his family has lost everything).

Just as I figured from reading the posts here while we were driving home from the airport tonight, the flight we booked for her has been cancelled. Highly unlikely that we will be able to get her here or anywhere else.
Pretty sure my dad, who lives in West Palm Beach, is still on some tour in Canada. I know he wasn't planning to go back to Florida until later this month. His wife apparently likes these long vacations which is working in their favor right now.
