We're in Jacksonville and so far we're planning to stay. We're not in a flood plain or evacuation zone so should be ok. All of the gas stations around us were out yesterday afternoon but were re-stocked over night.

Governor Scott just ordered a mandatory closing of all public K-12 schools in the state for Friday and Monday. I suppose this is partially to allow people to get out and partially because many schools are evacuation shelters. Way back in 1979 when I was at FAU, hurricane David came through and many people from Boca came to FAU because it was a shelter. We had several local residents in our dorm room and we played Monopoly and board games all night. Of course they were concerned for their homes but we were just college kids. It was so much fun!

Same here! We're in New Port Richey, and I've been stopping in every Publix from Palm Harbor to here to Land O Lakes for the past 3 days with no luck!! We have no radio, batteries, not enough water or canned goods. We even went to Sam's Club. Insanity!!! I'll be baking and cooking what I can today. We're still waiting to hear if we'll get evacuated. So far I think we're safe here..... Good luck and prayers to everyone in this path. It's scary, and I'm not someone who gets worried! I've been thru rough blizzards in NY (and hurricanes) that left LI without power for 10 days......... but this? I'm scared! I've been several places looking for water and bread. No luck. So we filled jugs with tap water filtered thru our Brita and froze them. Now freezing Ziploc bags of water too. Same here with baking & cooking up things in my freezer. Our neighborhood was without power for almost 3 weeks after Charley. Stay safe! When you take the ziploc bags out of the freezer watch for leaks. We have frozen orange juice from our trees in them and they all leaked even when not completely full. So not saying you shouldn't use them, just make sure to have them somewhere you can catch the water, just in case, when you thaw them.

I live in St Pete on the bay side. Last Monday my mom called because surgery scheduled for October was moved up. So I left on a plane in a hurry to help her. I did nothing to get ready or secure the house-obviously. My flight back on Saturday isn't happening and we are a mandatory evacuation zone anyhow. Will try to get back in Tuesday. I know there is nothing I can do, but it is still hard to relax and wait.

Leaks that cemented the bags to the freezer shelves or completely failed to seal and made icicles in the freezer. lol So I'm sure we will have to more fails in the near future while we use them!

Thank you for the information. I am just so worried after seeing all the heartbreaking coverage of Harvey. I've been glued to the tv and just heartsick over all the destruction in Texas. I just got off the phone with him and he said they are already out of water everywhere. He said they stock walmart at night so he's thinking of going late at night/early morning. He said they advised him to have canned food and a flashlight on hand. He will be working 12 hour shifts all weekend to prep the jets to move them to a safer base. He can stock up now on water from the tap. Many people fill their bathtub just before a storm hits so they'll have something to use to wash with and maybe even drink if it hasn't been sitting too long. (Take the water out of the tub. Don't get into the water.) He can use all kinds of containers to hold tap water and refill the bottles so he can carry it with him. Once again, thanks! Great advice!!

I'm up at the asscrack of dawn watching the most recent track which has it back coming up the middle of state. I know people who are evacuating from here, and evacuating to here. That's the problem with storms this size-there really isn't a place TO go. Lots of my friends are gathering together in the more solid homes. I am staying put. I am in a little apartment, on the ground floor. The physical area is not typically in a flood zone, so I am not worried about water intrusion. Where the apartment is situated, I am not worried about wind blowing a lot of loose stuff. By the time it gets here, it will be decreasing to a three or two. And while that is problem, it is not a category four like it will be when it hits south florida. I have been through many a storm and the thing to do is prepare the best you can and pray like crazy. I am running over to Publix for my last minute stuff and will spend the day getting ready. I have some cooking to do, I need to clean off my little porch. Beyond that, there really isn't anything else to do. Might go to the movies later this afternoon to get out of the house. I keep running through my check list in my head. The only thing I don't have is the stupid battery charger for my phone. There isn't one is the entire south east. I saw one at publix day before yesterday but as I was reaching for a hand reached out and grabbed it. That hand belonged to a woman that was almost twice my size and probably would have kicked my ass if I tried to insist it was mine, she had that mad as a hatter gotta have it storm craziness look in her eye...so I meekly walked away. Pissed but meekly.

Just wanted to say that you are all in my thoughts and I hope you stay safe.
Haven't read the whole thread so apologies if I am repeating advice already given but I saw this info on a BBC live feed and thought it was a good idea.
Scan all your insurance docs, policy numbers, contact numbers, SS number, birth certs, marriage certs, passport number and all the other important docs you can think of and then email all the scanned copies to yourself. Might save a lot of hassle later.
Be safe x

What about Kohls or other stores that might carry it but aren't normally thought of as carrying hurricane prep stuff?

Another suggestion is to write down your friends' and families' phone numbers and put them in a ziploc in a secure pocket so you have them in an emergency. I remember a heartbreaking interview after Harvey with a women evacuated to a shelter who didn't have her phone and she didn't know any of her contacts' phone numbers.

mom26: You're staying??? THANK YOU, btw!!! We're a bit west of you (I believe! I'm here for over 6 years and I still have no idea of where we are--we're right on 52/Little Road), and I thought that we'd be unsafe here. I just heard that our apartment complex's frame is made of wood, which scares me....... Thank you so much!! Are you near USF? I'm familiar with that area since I go to a dr there...... Do you feel like you'll be safe there? Good luck to you, and thank you again! We're in Carrollwood, a sub of N Tampa about 10 miles west of USF. We're a cement block house with our windows boarded and feel pretty secure. It's not a big or fancy house, but it's big enough. You are more than welcome to hunker down with us if you need to. Our 2 sons are at St. Leo University (also on 52), hunkered down. Apparently, the school is a shelter for those living in Dade City and we're hoping that DH's aunt and uncle make their way instead of trying to ride it out in their double-wide!! They cancelled classes 2 days ago but are keeping the cafeteria open until Sunday morning. Both boys say the campus is a ghost town.

I am pretty much ready, shutters up and yard 99.99% cleared. Also have tons of water, real food and way too much junk food. Have sedatives for the dogs if needed. Just have to bring in a couple big potted plants, clean and fill the tub, finish laundry and clean the house so it is not too disgusting when the power goes out.
If you are in the storm's path, please, please, please do not "party" (drink/drug too much) or take too many sedatives to deal with stress. Please stay alert so you can respond should the need arise. If you cannot plan or cope with stress for one reason or another, go stay at a shelter, friend or relative's house. If you do something stupid or panic during the storm there will not be any help, no 911 and no first responders.

I just received voluntary evacuation orders. I have a plane outta Tampa Saturday morning. I live in a flood prone area. PLEASE pray for me and my neighbors! Prayers!! Where did you hear about the evacuation? I am SO overwhelmed that I don't know which place to believe or listen to!!! We're on 52, near Little. Not sure of how safe we'd be. How'd you find a plane so quickly?? And, are they allowing pets (in the right cages)?? TIA! (It's a better option!) Just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt, but stay off I-75. I would go straight US 19 and carry it all the way to Tallahassee. Yeah, you'll have lights, but the back ups on 75, particularly near Ocala/Gainesville have been several hours. I would do that or 41. Lutz is a little higher elevation, and we're in a concrete block house built post-hurricane Andrew. So, I think we're okay staying. DH's opinion (after listening to Denis Phillips) is if it stays the way it is, it will make landfall around the Everglades, which is good, because it's sparsely populated. This is better than skirting the coast. We'll get winds, my guess is 75mph, but it won't be Cat 4 as it was originally. Do you follow Denis Phillips on Facebook or ABC Action News? They are updating their page almost minute by minute.

Meri-Lyn Dennis Phillips is the man. He was the weather guy when I was in Gainesville and always had the surf reports dead on. He moved to Tampa about the same time I moved south and has always had the hurricane info absolutely accurate. He's the one I go to for weather stuff right after NOAA. Back in the day I had a huge crush on his suspender wearing self. lol

Hillsborough Evacuation Info You can put in your address and it will give you info on your zone. WTSP has a pretty good website full of info. WTSPI know that it's extremely stressful for you all, but I've been extremely impressed by the amount of info that your Governor has been able to share multiple times on The Weather Channel. It seems extremely well organized given the magnitude of this storm. I wish you all my prayers! While I'm a Georgia resident, my friends have always joked that I should be a Florida resident because I spend so much time there for work -epecially Tampa and Jacksonville - and have been working there for 15+ years. Very worried about all of my friends / coworkers / clients down there!

We are in St Augustine. Mandatory evacuation for whole city and island. We're going to stay. Looking at the traffic and gas situation I think it will be best. I really didn't have riding out a hurricane on my bucket list, but now I can add it and hopefully cross it off. Hope all in Irma's path will be safe!

I've got water and canned goods, and plan on freezing some containers for water. But I normally shop on Fridays anyway for staples, like produce and lunchmeat and milk. But if the shelves are cleared, should I even bother? May be too late now, but I did order a battery charger from Amazon the other day.

My friend did the same and is supposed to get hers today. I'd skip publix...if you lose power and don't have a generator, you lose food. Do your shopping after-save yourself the madness that is publix. I was at mine this morning at about 8:15 and it was already packed.

Pasco just had a news conference on bay news and I'd bet their website will be updated. They talked a lot about shelters but I didn't get the number you could call. I'm sorry, I should have thought to do so. I'm in another county so I was only listening with half an ear.

Just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt, but stay off I-75. I would agree - if you can avoid 75, I would, it's jammed pack up here also (near junction to I-10) and unless they've managed to fix it, everyone north-bound was exiting at exit 427 and re-entering on the on-ramp due to an accident that damaged the pillars to overpass at US90

My boss was born/raised in Miami and her mother/brother are still down there. I asked if they were evacuating. She said "Oh no. We don't evacuate, we don't know anyone that ever has. People stay to keep an eye on their homes. If wind uncovers a window, you cover it back up. If you're not there, you can't cover it back up and the damage is worse." She says they've ridden out a lot of hurricanes.
So me being my usual smart ass said "is that why you moved to Boston?". LOL. She started laughing and said if she never has to ride out another hurricane she'll be perfectly happy.
