I went to Publix this morning to pick up a few of the weekly BOGO items, not specifically to get hurricane supplies. No water, no bread, not even flavored water, and worst of all no ramen noodles, no Spaghettios or Chef Boy Ardee ravioli! Youngest DS is night stocking crew for Publix. He's been working 11+ hour days this week and yes, that's what it's looked like all week. As soon as they get it on the shelves, it's gone.

I think we're just going to pack the car leave. We have 2 days before this hits. Praying we don't die in our car, trying to leave this!!!!!! Prayers to everyone in this path! I know you don't know me, but if you get trapped near north Tampa, you are more than welcome to hunker down with us. It's not the Taj Mahal, but we've boarded our windows and feel pretty secure.

I'm here for over 6 years and I still have no idea of where we are--we're right on 52/Little Road), and I thought that we'd be unsafe here. I just heard that our apartment complex's frame is made of wood, which scares me....... Thank you so much!! Are you near USF? I'm familiar with that area since I go to a dr there...... Do you feel like you'll be safe there? Good luck to you, and thank you again!

My Son is stationed in North Carolina and lives in the dorms on base. I'm very worried as they are doing hurricane preperations. We live where there are no natural disasters and I'm kinda wigging out! What does he need for his room? What should he expect!
Edited to add: never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I'd be posting to a hurricane thread!! 🤤

Thanks, Patter! You be safe too. I HATE leaving my "stuff". I worked so hard to save it after my divorce, dragged it everywhere, and hate to leave it behind. but our lives matter more. Trying to dig out the urgent stuff and just leave. Taking Xanax with me for my sanity! Wise decision. Stay safe!

We're a cement block house with our windows boarded and feel pretty secure. It's not a big or fancy house, but it's big enough. You are more than welcome to hunker down with us if you need to.

Where did you hear about the evacuation? I am SO overwhelmed that I don't know which place to believe or listen to!!! We're on 52, near Little. Not sure of how safe we'd be. How'd you find a plane so quickly?? And, are they allowing pets (in the right cages)?? TIA! (It's a better option!)

I appreciate your kind gesture, and if we stay or make it back here, we'll have to meet up in the middle!

If you grab only the things you most need and get in your car and go, you can make it. I know it's hard, but you've gotta do what you've gotta do. If you are in a mandatory evacuation area and do not have gas, you call this number 1-800-955-5504 Put that number in every phone you'll be taking. Write it down and stick it in your glove compartment and also put it in your purse.

Edited to add: never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I'd be posting to a hurricane thread!! 🤤 Welcome. None of us want to be here, either. If he's in the service, you can believe that the government has run through endless "what-if" scenarios already. I wouldn't worry about what he needs for his room if I were you. (Honest.) It depends where he is and what he will be doing to know what to expect. Normally, if you're in your house and you've boarded up all the windows before a big storm - Cat 1 or 2 for example - it gets very dark inside your house. When the wind starts howling, it gets a little creepy. When you start to hear tree limbs creaking, you swear that there can't be a single limb on a single tree left (there will be). You may lose electricity, and then it may begin to get pretty warm. If the eye of the storm goes directly over your house, the rain stops and you can go outside and look straight up into a beautiful sky. When the eye passes, the rain and wind take on full force again. Afterwards, broken limbs and fallen trees will have taken out power lines. Streets will be covered with debris. Windows on tall buildings may have been shattered and glass may have fallen all over the streets below. There will be standing water in spots, and rushing water in others. Snakes and depending how far south you are, alligators and fire ants will be out looking for dry land. In SE Tx after Harvey, cattle were up on the highways trying to get out of the water. (Harvey didn't move, so for most of SE Tx, it was a rain event more than a wind event. Irma will be different since it is expected to keep moving.)

Are you near Bayshore?  No, I live in town but not even two miles from ben T davis beach. Very close to the veterans, the Courtney Campbell, and the Howard franklind. Near TPA. I don't care if the winds rip my roof off. I had over $1,000 worth of damage to my car after a four hour rain storm three years ago. Water got waist deep. My car will be in the airport parking garage; but my townhouse 😢 Please pray the rain stays away!

Edited to add: never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I'd be posting to a hurricane thread!! 🤤 Somewhat depends on the base/unit, but typically they will have pallets of MREs and water at the barracks, although they do try to keep chow halls operational in all but the worst of weather. The newer barracks are category 3/4 rated here. I would encourage him to get some water/Gatorade/snacks/batteries for his flashlight to have in his room. If he lives in the barracks any evacuating would be done at the unit level.

Will absolutely keep you and your neighbors in my thoughts that you get little to no rain. Keep safe.

It's unreal for me to fathom the enormity of this storm. our city in west central Georgia is 100% booked on hotel rooms already and a news article today said that the entire state was almost at capacity as far as hotels go. My cousin went to walmart yesterday for regular groceries and they were completely wiped out of water. Our Home Depot is bare of anything used for hurricane preparedness... Our local news is saying we will have winds of about 60mph based on the current model. We don't get crazy weather here. Like we shut down as a city if we get a snow flurry. 60mph is nuts for us, nothing near what you guys will be getting though.
I am praying for all of you guys in Florida and anywhere in the path. I can't stop looking at the news and fretting about all my pea friends, not to mention my niece in Tampa and friends around Jacksonville, and family on the Georgia coast.

I am just so worried after seeing all the heartbreaking coverage of Harvey. I've been glued to the tv and just heartsick over all the destruction in Texas. I just got off the phone with him and he said they are already out of water everywhere. He said they stock walmart at night so he's thinking of going late at night/early morning. He said they advised him to have canned food and a flashlight on hand. He will be working 12 hour shifts all weekend to prep the jets to move them to a safer base.

Many people fill their bathtub just before a storm hits so they'll have something to use to wash with and maybe even drink if it hasn't been sitting too long. (Take the water out of the tub. Don't get into the water.) He can use all kinds of containers to hold tap water and refill the bottles so he can carry it with him.

Same here! We're in New Port Richey, and I've been stopping in every Publix from Palm Harbor to here to Land O Lakes for the past 3 days with no luck!! We have no radio, batteries, not enough water or canned goods. We even went to Sam's Club. Insanity!!! I'll be baking and cooking what I can today. We're still waiting to hear if we'll get evacuated. So far I think we're safe here..... Good luck and prayers to everyone in this path. It's scary, and I'm not someone who gets worried! I've been thru rough blizzards in NY (and hurricanes) that left LI without power for 10 days......... but this? I'm scared! I've been several places looking for water and bread. No luck. So we filled jugs with tap water filtered thru our Brita and froze them. Now freezing Ziploc bags of water too. Same here with baking & cooking up things in my freezer. Our neighborhood was without power for almost 3 weeks after Charley. Stay safe!

Governor Scott just ordered a mandatory closing of all public K-12 schools in the state for Friday and Monday. I suppose this is partially to allow people to get out and partially because many schools are evacuation shelters.
In my part of Florida, though, it doesn't make much sense (unless evacuees are going to start heading west on I-10) as Pensacola is completely out of the uncertainty cone for Irma. In fact, my son has already evacuated up here from UCF. DH is pissed because all his school stuff is AT school and he won't be able to get to it so that he can do work while he's off.

They closed ours to use as shelters for evacuees from other areas and now we are in the direct path! My son's high school is a designated shelter and ridiculously it floods up to 6" with heavy thunderstorms at anytime. I don't know what they are thinking.
