Question...Irma seems to be moving west. Which side of a hurricane is worse? If I'm east of the eye is that better or worse than being west?

leftturnonly : The shelter is literally across the street here, but we'd have a tiny space and we'd have to bring out own bedding + we have 5 cats. I can't imagine waiting it out there......... Most people here are staying in these apartments and in their homes. I am sheltering at home, also in an apartment. But I am on the ground floor. I am also well prepared and have been through multiple hurricanes as an adult. I am familiar with the verbiage that the weather people use. I am completely confident in who I listen to for that weather news. If you aren't any of the above, please consider the shelter. Even for just Sunday night/Monday while the storm moves through. You can go home afterwards if the shelter is right there. The shelter volunteers are trained, they will have information and they will tell you when it is safe. They can be your hurricane sherpas. In the meantime, consider parking your tv on bay news 9 where they are giving out good solid information that can help ease your anxieties. One of which is to please remember that by the time the storm gets here it will no longer be a category 4 storm. While still dangerous, it will not be the same devastating storm the went through the Caribbean islands. I have found that the worst part is waiting and not having a plan. Make a plan, and tweak as needed, but don't allow the fear of the unknown to rule your decisions. Get information, plan, then execute. You will get through this. Thank you for that! We just came to a family decision that we'd sure things up here and ride it out. We went out on a food & water run, came home and saw that it moved more to the west coast. We're closer to Tampa, so it's not nearly as bad as Ft Myers or south, but, it's scary!!! Keep in mind, DH and I have each weathered hurricanes, blizzards, tornadoes, etc..., but seeing our neighbors in our complex all packing up and leaving tonight, scares the crap out of me. As far as the shelter goes, I'm truly scared of being with people here. I have opioids that they'd want, and all of the crap I'm hearing scares me. I think we'll try to be calm and wait it out here...

I just can not stress to you enough that you have time NOW to leave. I don't care if you haven't packed. I don't care if you don't have your important papers. I don't care what your neighbors are doing. Please, please, please, DO NOT determine what you will do based on what someone else will do. anxiousmom has evaluated her situation specifically taking into account all kinds of things down to how many inches above ground she is compared to others around her. No way would she want you to stay if you are in as much danger as it sounds like you are in.

I'm listening to various mayors and the governor begging people to leave the southern part of the state. You can hear the frustration in their voices when asked about locals being interviewed, planning to shelter in place. Especially after seeing the devastation in Barbuda and other small islands, I can't believe anyone is choosing to stay in the Keys.

I have looked at every thing and determined what will work for me based on everything I know about where I am. The shelters are not as scary as you think. It isn't like the astrodome after Katrina. For all our faults, Florida has the hurricane thing down ... and that includes fully staffing shelters with emergency personnel both medical and police. It has been repeated at all the press conferences, including the one for your county-the head sheriff mentioned it specifically.

I can't believe anyone is choosing to stay ... It happens every time in every storm. I'm not talking about first responders or military that take extreme precautions and extreme risk to save those who just won't go. And I don't mean people like Anxiousmom who has carefully and realistically evaluated her particular threat levels, which, from what I remember, happen to be far less than many others. I mean the people who will begin calling in to 911 begging for help to save their lives from the destruction that the wind and rain wreck. Not to mention the tornadoes, the falling trees and the fires that inevitably happen. Nope. Instead of getting out when they could, they endanger other peoples' lives every.single.storm. And those first responding heroes go out every.single.storm because that's who they are and that's what they do until the conditions become so critically deadly that even they can't withstand it. Prayers for all those who will be answering those calls.

zella Jax international is closing at 7 pm Saturday, and their flight is at noon to Charlotte. I will be taking them early to the airport and then home to pack up the car (can't fit everything and everyone in at the same time) and get on the road to Pensacola where I have a hotel room booked until Wednesday. The British Embassy want us to leave, DHs work want us to leave. We are a Zone D, and Clay is mandatory evacuating zones A, B and C. I stayed for Matthew, but Irma is another animal entirely. As long as I get my DH and DD to the airport, I will breathe easier as I hit the traffic heading West.

I've never been to his house it looks like he is on the edge of a zone D and his house is not in a zone. I've texted asking if he is on a hill or something, but he hasn't replied. So if he is not in a zone, but is in the middle of several zones is the most likely reason elevation?

I'm in a D, but a couple of streets away is C because it's close to water. So it could just be that your brother isn't close enough to water to be placed in a zone.

Right now on CNN they're saying "there are people in the Keys who refuse to evacuate who are going to die." I don't understand it at all..

The east side is worse, especially near the water. Where are you located? Jacksonville area near the St Johns River. We'll be on the east side of the storm. That's better then than south Florida! I think it will have weakened by the time it gets that far north, you'll still have wind and surge near the beaches, but not as much as further south.

Rick Scott just said if you aren't on the road by midnight, don't bother. You will get stuck. You will have problems finding gas. If you have a shelter to go to, get there!!!

Please check to see if the charge for the ticket posted. Yesterday a friend of mine booked a flight from Ft Lauderdale to Boston. She was relieved and anxious to leave. This morning she went to check in and the reservation did not exist and never posted to her credit card even though it was confirmed yesterday. She could not get through to the airline, Jet Blue, and is now in her car attempting to drive north. We had so many issues with this craziness. So many problems with computer systems not handling the volume. We'd get all the way through to pay, put all the information in and the reservation would disappear. We've gotten confirmation emails and the charge went through. We ended up getting her a flight on Delta. The other issue we had was getting refunds for the cancelled flights. Southwest credited the money back in full immediately. JetBlue did not and charged a fee! Finally got that straightened out too. Just hoping flights are not cancelled on Friday. I'm hoping that your MIL's flight was able to get out today.

DH just went out and found gas so we're at least full. I was throwing urgent Rx's, etc. together while he went. He came back and said he'd want to wait til 7 am to leave--his vision has been bad lately. I have to respect his wishes. My vision is even worse. Just getting things together and I pray that there will be gas along the way and a way to get out of here, even for a week.

Gas has been steadily resupplied along the evacuation routes. The good news is the number of people who have already gone; you may not be facing as much traffic as you fear you will be. At least hopefully not until you get further away from the worst threats, any way. Copy that number from earlier in the thread just in case you need to call someone for help. You've got this. You can do it.

This is a dumb question but can things like Amazon Prime still get in? If so and anyone needs anything, I'm happy to use my account to help anyone order stuff. Stay safe peas. Very sweet, @missjen! I can't imagine that any deliveries are taking place though... that would be very irresponsible of the delivery companies to expose their employees to such risk. your heart is in a beautiful place though. I, too, would love to be of some help...

The good news this morning is that the cone of doom has shifted enough that a good portion of the southeast coast has been taken out. Miami and that area will not get the predicted damage. That means that everyone who who has family in South Florida (Miami, Ft. Lauderdale etc) should be okay with less winds than predicted. Of course, we still can get wobbles, but it looks like it is going effect the west coast more.
They are rolling through all the all the evacuations now. All barrier islands are pretty much off limits, all low lying areas are being evacuated, and if you live in a manufactured home, you should be out.
This new track takes the eye off my head, but still puts me in it. At this point anyway.
Shelters are opening all over the place, if I were on the coast I would head to one of the shelters in one of the inland counties like Polk, Hardee, Highlands, Lake, Marion, Sumpter counties. That should get you far enough away-still windy, but you don't have to leave the state. You may not find a hotel room, but they are opening more shelters to open to accommodate evacuees.
