Oh my gosh, high school class of 1979 here. I love every one of these songs. Such great memories. Forgot to add: My best friend and I LOVED the song "Brandy"... my teetotaling mama hated when we sang it because "Its all about alcohol". We would laugh and try to tell her that it had nothing to do with booze, but mama was insistent.....

How about Blind Man in the Bleachers? Made my husband listen to it once when it came on during a car ride - he's just enough younger than me that he'd never heard it. End of the song, and he was all like "The old guy DIED? All that time going to the damn games and his son finally plays and the old guy is DEAD! What a terrible song!" So then we started listing all the depressing songs from the 70's and it kept us busy all the way to our destination Giggling like crazy over here. Tragedy was a popular theme in 70's music. Honey Wildfire Hello, this is Joanie Run Joey Run Rocky (Austin Roberts) Shannon When my teen son had his first serious girlfriend, I forced him to listen to allllll of ‘Paradise By the Dashboard Lights’. When he complained about it, I told him the 70 s had so much more to offer. Lol.

Maybe more, now that I have an adult perspective.

I love Paradise by the Dashboard Lights! I don't remember when it came out (before I was born), but I know all the words and love to sing along with it. The strangest 70s song I remember is "My Girl Bill".

i listen to 70's on 7 too and always wonder why Sirius doesn't have a dedicated Disco channel? or do they? it just seems weird that they have every other genre out there but Disco. not 70's songs, but pure Donna Summer, Saturday night fever, Bee Gees disco. Still reading along so someone might have already answered..... There is a channel called 54. Not sure of the number. I think they play mostly disco.

We are big fans of Yacht Rock in this house. I was quite bummed when it went back to Love a few weeks back.
My 6 year old LOVES LOVES LOVES "Escape (the pina colada song)". Among her other favorites are other Rupert Holmes songs "Him" and "Answering Machine". She is also a fan of Gerry Rafferty with "Right Down the Line" and "Baker Street". She was super bummed when I told her he died a few years back. She said that was rude since she never got to see him in concert. Lol. I love my kid! She knows all the words to the songs Sirius plays during Yacht Rock.

Another tragedy song not mentioned yet was Honey by Bobby Goldsboro - behold the classic lyrics See the tree, how big it's grown But friend, it hasn't been too long it wasn't big I laughed at her and she got mad The first day that she planted it, was just a twig Then the first snow came and she ran out To brush the snow away so it wouldn't die Came runnin' in all excited slipped and almost hurt herself And I laughed till I cried She was always young at heart Kinda dumb and kinda smart and I loved her so And I surprised her with a puppy Kept me up all Christmas Eve two years ago And it would sure embarrass her When I came in from workin' late 'cause I would know That she'd been sittin there an' cryin' Over some sad and silly late, late show And Honey, I miss you And I'm bein' good And I'd love to be with you If only I could She wrecked the car and she was sad And so afraid that I'd be mad, but what the heck Though I pretended hard to be Guess you could say she saw through me and hugged my neck I came home unexpectedly And caught her cryin' needlessly in the middle of the day And it was in the early spring When flowers bloom and robins sing, she went away And Honey, I miss you And I'm bein' good And I'd love to be with you If only I could One day while I was not at home While she was there and all alone the angels came Now all I have is memories of Honey And I wake up nights and call her name Now my life's an empty stage Where Honey lived, and Honey played and love grew up And a small cloud passes over head And cries down on the flower bed that Honey loved And see the tree, how big it's grown But friend, it hasn't been too long, it wasn't big And I laughed at her, she got mad The first day that she planted it, was just a twig Corinne

i've tried to listen to Studio 54 but some of their disco is way too......out there.... almost too techno disco. KWIM? i can't describe it but i didn't like that station much. maybe i need to give it another try. I agree with your assessment. I need more Donna Summer and less stupid shit. I take what I can get though, and scroll through if they're playing stupid shit. HAHA! (and every time Donna Summer comes on and anyone is in the car with me, I shout out "Queen of the Disco". I hope one day when I'm gone, the kids remember some of this stuff, think of me, and get a smile on their face) Donna Summer is the shit! I love her!

Ode to Billy Joe - a song that was turned into a made-for-tv movie. Both bad. Blasphemy! Bobbie Gentry's atmospheric little ditty was dripping with blue-eyed Southern soul. Don't remember the TV movie.

Today I was out shopping, and I wasn't even paying attention to the background music, until suddenly I realized it was Disco Duck! It must have been some random mixed Channel, cuz directly after Disco Duck was a current pop hit, then an 80s song, then the country song. I was going to ask the lady what station it was on, but then I forgot when I was paying. It did remind me of this thread though listening to Disco Duck!

I can`t even bring myself to name my most disliked song, it is about leaving a cake out in the rain and hearing it makes me want to be sick. MacArthur Park??!! I LOVE that song!! One of my favorite Donna Summers' songs!

I was more into R&B during the 70's, so my playlist included a lot of Blue Magic, Earth, Wind & Fire, Rick James (Mary Jane, a song about marijuana), and Heatwave.

I must've been listening at the same time as OP this morning because I too heard Disco Duck and eldest DD was in the car with me and I wouldn't let her get out until she heard the duck. LMAO Here's a song not yet mentioned. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Every time I hear it (or any other song telling a true story) I tell the kids "shhhh...listen to the lyrics...a true story" Please tell me that you held the lock button down so she couldn't get out?!?!?! So CRUEL....and so awesome!

I have always had a beef with the song "Escape a/k/a Pina Colada Song". When they are meeting after exchanging the personal adds and the say "Oh! It's you?!?" Are you FREAKING KIDDING ME?!?!?!?! If that were MY husband in the bar sending out a personal ad....I would whip his ass! I would most certainly not be laughing!

Didn't notice The Streak mentioned earlier. My husband is a huge Ray Stevens fan. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is another favorite. DS really likes it. It gives me the chills every time I hear it (which used to be a lot-it was on our last playlist). Don't look, Ethel! Save

The 70s was the decade of cheese.
The worst song in all of history ever is "I've Never Been to Me" - from the 70s.
Nobody mentioned The Night Chicago Died.
Then there was no sound at all, except the clock upon the wall... Then the door burst open wide, and my daddy stepped inside - And he kissed my momma's face - And he brushed her tears away...
S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y NIGHT!
Little Willy
Chicka-Boom
Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road
I have vivid memories of liking Olivia Newton-John's song "Something Better to Do". I wanted to buy the 45 of that song and my mom was going to Nichol's Discount City to get some things so I asked her to buy the 45 for me while she was there. When she got home she laughed and said that she asked the clerk in the record department if she had "Something Better to Do" and the clerk just looked at her like my mom insulted her. Mom finally realized that the clerk thought mom was asking her a question about what she was doing rather than asking her if they had the 45 of that song.

Lots of novelty songs. Shaving Cream I have a sad story to tell you It may hurt your feelings a bit Last night as I walked into my bathroom I stepped in a big pile of shaving cream Be nice and clean Shave every day and you'll always look keen I think I'll break off with my girlfriend Her antics are queer, I'll admit Each time I say, "Darling, I love you" She tells me that I'm full of shaving cream Be nice and clean Shave every day and you'll always look keen Our baby fell out of the window You'd think that her head would be split But good luck was with her that morning She fell in a barrel of shaving cream Be nice and clean Shave every day and you'll always look keen My old lady died in a bathtub She died from a terrible fit In order to fulfill her wishes She was buried in six feet of shaving cream Be nice and clean Shave every day and you'll always look keen When I was in France with the army One day I looked inside my kit I thought I would find me a sandwich But the darn thing was loaded with shaving cream Be nice and clean Shave every day and you'll always look keen And now folks my story is ended I think it is time I should quit And if anyone of you feel offended Push your head in a bucket of shaving cream Be nice and clean Shave every day and you'll always look keen Energy Crisis 74I think there was another song like this about flying saucers.

Lordy Lord, I’d (blissfully) forgotten about much of this quality music from the 70s.
And now I’m getting all the visuals that go with it — the polyester pants, neon prints, bell bottoms...
