The strip search was ridiculous, but that guy wasn't giving up, was he? I'm shocked they didn't target him first though. I'm not sure about the walking stick. I don't even remember anything about that.

Not really surprised they didn't vote out the paranoid crazy dude. It's too early in the game. They don't know who they can trust, they can't shift gears that fast yet. They had their two sides, and no one was really in a position to take control and shift everyone to Allan. It's out in the open now, so if they go to tribal next week, he's out.
I was surprised the super idol wasn't played to save Katrina, but she was much smarter than I would have been. They were being lumped together and not seen as individuals, and if she had stayed, no one would have given either of them a chance.
I'm happy about the Devon/Ryan alliance. So far I like Ryan.

Can I ask some of you survivor vets for some clarification?
Jeff said that tie votes are back in play. What does he mean by that? I wasn't aware that they were out of play, just that they seemed to have dealt with them differently over the years. I remember fire building challenges among tie vote getters. I think I remember the possibility of drawing rocks if the tie wasn't broken on the second vote. And I think I remember a season where if the tie didn't get broken on the second vote, then those people were safe and you could only vote for others.
Does this mean they're going back to something like the tie vote getters have to do the tie breaker and the others remain safe?

I wonder if she told her tribe about that? If she did, it wasn't a great idea to vote her out. There are usually a lot of water challenges, and even though she isn't a current Olympic swimmer, she could probably kick all their asses. That "super idol" secret advantage ended up being the lamest thing ever.

is this season filmed in Hawaii??? I thought it was Fiji area? I didn't quite understand why she wasn't using the idol for Katrina too. Then they could have gotten rid of Ashley, and that would have blown their alliance of 4. although I saw in the previews that now Chrissy going to align with cowboy Ben (?) and, it needs to be said - I'M NOT FIRST OUT IN THE POOL THIS TIME!!!!!

Waiting patiently for jackie to get in here! I just love her day-after posts and appreciate her links to the recaps, etc. I must say, this was a boring episode for a season opener. The unloading of food and supplies was ridiculous. They were just throwing stuff in the water and most of it stayed there. I told my husband, "Oh no. I hope we don't have a whole cast of dum-dums, like in the one season I couldn't even finish because I thought we were being punk'd." When crazy-eyes went on his paranoid rant with the couple that he thought was hiding something, my fear grew. I truly hope this is not a dud season. On a positive note...my person was finally not the first one voted out!

I adore Survivor. I've watched every single episode, and every single season since it's first begun. But this episode didn't seem very promising and I'm hoping we aren't off to a bad start too.
First of all- almost every one seemed so anxious to get off the big boat to go to their boats for fire that they gave no consideration whatsoever to all of the necessary and wonderful gear on the boat. Fire is fire-people have made it on day one on the beach, and have gotten flint very close to day one. Gear is critical-you can only get what you grab off that huge boat when you first come in. There were people diving off that big boat as soon as Jeff said "Go". Idiots in my opinion. They were diving in without even grabbing a thing as compared to other seasons. There were a few smart ones that stayed and grabbed things. I'll have to re-watch it to find out who they were.
Hop2-I agree 100% with you-I would have voted paranoid guy out! Anyone that paranoid can't be trusted at all. Didn't make any sense to vote out Katrina over that guy. She looks fit and finding out at the end that she was in the Olympics (as a swimmer no less!) well that was a huge loss for them.
I'm also confused about the "tie vote being back in" that Jeff mentioned. It goes back and forth and I wish he'd explained it better. Waiting for Jackie to join us too.
The challenge went well I thought with all teams pretty well matched. It was very close there at the end.

Alan's confessional was interesting. He isn't paranoid, he is playing paranoid to point out JB and Ashley's obvious, immediate bond. I don't know how well it will work in the long run, but I think it was successful to an extent because he has made Ben doubt the foursome alliance. As long as Alan keeps his feigned paranoia and accusations directed at JB and Ashley and interacts normally with the other tribe members, it could work to make one of them a target. What will be interesting to see if they distance themselves from each other or tighten as a duo. I thought the idol was kind of lame. If Chrissie used it, it would put her and Katrina against the rest of the tribe and made it harder for her to forge other alliances. The dude I can't stand right and IMHO has a true paranoid vibe is the parole officer on the Healers team. Was he ever agressive with Mike and accusing him of finding the idol.

That's Joe, our guy in the pool. Yeah, we immediately realized he is an ass. But we have Ben too and really like him. I feel like we didn't get to know many of the survivors last night. They focused on the team with Ben and Alan. Of course, that's probably because they went to tribal.

Happy momma, aren’t you sweet! I was super excited for Survivor; like Debbie, I adore it. I’ve also watched every season, most of them two or here times! The first episode is always a tough one. They have to maroon them, set up the tribe divisions and all that. It always takes me a few episodes to really get into it. I’m still feeling very hopeful. Seems like a good group with lots of Survivor fans, which I always appreciate. I agree that it was frustrating watching them all just jump over and seeing all that stuff left on the ship and produce left floating in the water. BUT, I do understand the urgency of racing to the beach. Fire is absolutely key. I’ve seen some serious suffering when they can’t get fire, and therefore water (they do still need to boil water, right?—sometimes that’s confusing to me). You can live without almost anything, but not water. And then there’s the comfort thing at night. It gets reallycold out there at night. I wish I would have gotten a better look at the supplies; it just all happens so fast. I saw a lot of produce and produce doesn’t seem all that useful. It would provide food for a short period of time, but I think it would spoil quickly in that heat. Now if there were bags of rice or beans and they left those behind, or if there was a tarp, that’s very foolish. It was a little embarrassing seeing the Hustlers flounder on the boat. I bet the professional fisher woman didn’t like that (she’s someone we have in the pool too). I think the only two players I don’t like so far are the probation officer—way too cocky and I didn’t like how he handled the doctor. Who does he think he is demanding to know if he found an idol? I also don’t like NFL guy. He’s a little crazy and not very strategic. First he’s in the enviable position of being asked to join a strong four person alliance. Who cares if there’s a couple? He can be a pair with the other guy in the alliance. Besides, it seems a bit premature to decide on day one that this pair is a couple and will stick together. So what does this fool do? He casts suspicion on his own alliance members. He alienates them by showing he has no trust in them and that he’s happy to let the rest of the tribe know he has no trust in them. THEN, he votes someone else out. So now he has to go back to camp with a group that has no trust in him. WTH was the point? I was surprised they chose to vote out the Olympian swimmer. Although I’m glad they did because otherwise it would have been Ashley going home, and I have her in the pool. Honestly, I had no hope she would make it through TC. I told my dd, “well I’m done now!” I thought they would either vote out Ashley or they would vote out Chrissy or Olympian and she would use the idol and Ashley would still go home. I was shocked. My dd feels she didnt use the idol so she could get in with the tribe and I’m sure she’s right, but still...! Honestly, Chrissy should push to replace wildcard NFL guy. I would want him out if Mary alliance ASAP. In a short interview with the swimmer, she said that she didn’t bond at all with Chrissy (though she tried) and that Chrissy wanted her out from the get go. Maybe Chrissy really didn’t want to be seen as part of the mom alliance. I guess we’ll find out. It’s hard to say who I like so far. Most of the people I do like. I really enjoyed seeing the bellhop and the surfer form an alliance. I hope it sticks. It reminded me a little of Stephen and JT and their friendship/alliance that took them to the end of their season. Jeff Probst says the next episode is KILLER. Let’s hope that’s true and not hype. Oh, and here is the link to Dalton’s recap. Enjoy! One last thing, the “tie back in” comment confused me too. One of us needs to figure out what that means.

jackie, they haven't had to boil water for quite a few seasons. Maybe someone else knows when that ended. I actually think it's a smart move, because I don't want to see person after person pass out or get sick because they are dehydrated. They've also filmed in Fiji for several years now; I don't know if the water situation might be tied to the particular location, e.g. there's no fresh water source on the islands. Jeff expressed a strong preference for filming in Fiji, said he'd like to have every season filmed there, and he is an executive producer and has a lot of clout with the show, so we may just see Fiji from here on. I like it. It's absolutely beautiful. I haven't read anything about the tie votes. I presume it means they are going back to the original way ties were handled. Wasn't it if the first vote was a tie there was a revote and you could only vote for those in the tie? Then if there was still a tie did it go to rocks? They've had a few iterations of how tied votes are handled, so it's a bit confusing. I thought this was a pretty boring season opener, and I'm a HUGE Survivor fan. I hope it's better next week.

The CBS affiliate in Columbus and Indianapolis are in a dispute with Direct TV and we haven't had CBS for nearly a month now.
I don't watch a lot of reality TV, but I have always watched Survivor, so I am catching it online.

It was very weird that the first episode was only an hour long also. Usually they give us 2 hours, or at least 90 minutes, to get acquainted with the characters before theres a tribal council

(they do still need to boil water, right?—sometimes that’s confusing to me They always have a "well" and I suspect it's stocked with clean water and they now have proper insulated drink bottles as well;. I don't know for a fact but I think they may have had too many medical issues, I know I've read past contestants say they had issues with parasites like giardia for a long time afterwards, plus we've seen them get affected by heat stroke even when they had plenty of water to drink. An online Q+A from 2015 says: So if they boil water now it seems to be just an extra precaution and no longer an absolute necessity that it was in the first few seasons.

The parole officer needs to go right away...a true bully. Doesnt he remind you of the guy who would dig a hole to hide in so he could listen to conversations? They look related. Throwing the food overboard made them look stupid. It was a pretty boring beginning.

Haven't been back to this thread since I posted so I just wanted to add a few things. Yes, I knew about the water and how it didn't have to be boiled anymore. That's what the wells and the insulated bottles are for. The keys to survival are you can live 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food. Yes, fire would have been great to have day 1 but from my perspective (and that's easy to do sitting here at my keyboard) the things I've seen them gather from that big boat in the first few minutes of the game have been very important too-chickens, fishing gear, all kinds of equipment that is difficult to get later in the game. Whereas some people in the game have made fire on the beach once their tribes have gotten to their beaches. And they know that once they get to the first immunity challenge (if there are 3 teams) one will get a fire making kit and one will get flint (or at least something like that). It's not like chickens and fishing gear are giving out at the first immunity challenge. Taking that further the losing team gets flint at the first tribal council.
Totally agree with you Jackie and the other Peas. I don't like the probation officer and I defiantly don't like the NFL guy. NFL guy gave the excuse that he was "pretending" to be paranoid later which is pure BS. He was paranoid, because even pretending to be as you pointed out made no sense in game play whatsoever. I really think that entire tribe made one huge mistake by not voting him out first after that performance. They could have kept Katrina who would have benefited them later down the road in water challenges. Why keep paranoid guy at all?
Anyway, I too don't know who I like so early on. I'm not in the pool so I don't care who stays or goes at this point. Although I do hope NFL guy and probation office get voted off very soon. Off to read the Dalton Ross thread and thanks so much Jackie for the link!
