One of my neighbours has several cats, and one of them, Dennis, is an absolute bastard! He is black with a white moustache, the epitome of cuteness, and very affectionate. But... he torments my dog dreadfully, and I'm sure Turriff is going to have an aneurysm one of these days. Dennis will sit in front of my house, blithely washing himself while Turriff goes crazy at the window. But tonight, the heights of Dennis's evilness were exposed even further. I was chatting to my neighbour, and she told me that when Dennis sees my car isn't parked outside my house, he will jump onto the front window ledge, so that he can look in and see Turriff in the living room. And when Turriff starts getting upset and barks at him, the satanic creature will strut up and down the ledge, secure in the knowledge that Turriff can't get him!
(My post is mostly tongue in cheek, but seriously, is there anything I could put on the window ledge to stop him from going up there?)

You can put the spikes that they use to keep pigeons off of ledges. Home Depot sells them. Of course that means you can never lean out that window, but perhaps even having them there temporarily will stop the cat from taunting your dog.
ETA: Sorry, just realized you aren't in the US. Perhaps Amazon sells pigeon spikes as well?

We, unfortunately, have one less cat in our neighborhood tonight. It got run over by a car right in front of our house. The person that ran over it just kept going. My husband went out, scooped it up, and buried it in our backyard. I have NO IDEA who it belonged to, so I can't even notify the owners of the cat's tragic death. People really need to take care of their pets better.

We had a wild rabbit that would do that to my dogs. I say we had, but you know what I mean. Not sure where its nest was but it would hang out every afternoon in front of our picture window and crinkle its cute little nose while by dog went bonkers.

Your post cracks me up. CATS! They can be such jerks (I have two). Anyhow, I like the idea of pigeon spike things. Or, if it's not yet rainy out your way, could you stop by the pet store and pick up some kind of spray that people use to keep cats off things? Or I bet there's even a recipe to make your own online.
ETA a couple more thoughts that aren't ideal either. Could you ask the neighbors to retrain Dennis to be an indoor cat? I know, fat chance once they're outdoor cats. Or, could you at least pull the curtains on that window when you're not home to keep your dog from seeing the cat?

I wouldn't want a neighbor's cat jumping up on my windowsill in the first place though, so I'd have to tell the neighbors to keep their cat away. We have so many dogs in this neighborhood though that the cats don't really venture out! |

My first thought was fly paper... cats don't like stickiness on their paws... tt would trap any critters flying about too! But, I don't know how you could adhere/attach it to your window ledge with any kind of stay-ability. Cats can be evil when it comes to tormenting the dogs.  |

Maybe some duct tape laid sticky-side up, with the ends curled under just enough to get the tape to stick to the ledge? He'll completely freak out when it sticks to his feet.
I'm not sure if it's too damp where you are to get this to work.

Disclaimer: I love love love cats. I also love dogs.
Cat's are assholes and if they have a chance to bully a doggie they will do so. I"m not sure how to get Dennis out of your space, but it sounds like he has a fun personality. I'd probably have to adopt him. Your poor doggie, though.

How about a rubber snake. My dad had to use them to keep the neighbor's "stray" cats that she was always feeding from peeing on his bushes. It worked but unfortunately all it did was send them to another neighbor's house. I swear that every time you went in or out his (or then her) front door, it smelled like cat pee.
As a side note, I hate cats that are left to roam and I hate the people who let them roam even more especially when they know that they are being a nuisance to neighbors. I'm sure your neighbor is an otherwise lovely person, but it's inconsiderate at best (and I don't want to hear about how cats aren't domesticated the way that dogs are, blah blah blah.) Farm cats are the exception but not if they roam to the neighbors

We have bunnies galore in our neighborhood. Neither of my dogs even acknowledge their existence. They can go hang out in the sunshine within five feet of each other. My dogs are herders and just don't have the urge to chase (unless it is a squirrel). Cats don't like sand paper or hot sauce. I'd google some safe(ish) ideas and go from there. Our only neighborhood cat prowler will sit up on his hind legs and Muhammad Ali my dog, so my pup doesn't pester the cat anymore. |

If you want privacy so the dog can't see out, try buying some window film. Not sure how big the window is, or if you could just do the bottom 12"

I detered a neighborhood cat from using my vegetable beds as her toilet by putting out a bowl of vinegar. I haven't had to do anything the last couple of years as it seemed to permanently break the habit.

This whole thread surprises me. I have 5 cats right now (2 are mine & DH's, and 3 are DD29's). I had a siggy bar of my pets circa 2003. We had 4 cats, 1 dog and various other pets. The cats got along with the dog, but they were all indoor pets. Maybe that's the difference???
I understand the "cat-asshole" theory though. I do know many cats like that. I think that the cats want to show off because they're outside and they know that the dogs are inside and can't get them........ so they show off and play, and it drives the dogs mad. I don't think they mean any harm.
I DO agree that cats should be indoor cats for so many reasons, but our cats have had many opportunities to live with or meet other animals and they've been fine. I'd just shut my blinds/curtains if that were my dog.

Or red pepper flakes--the point is something spicy on their paws and the flakes don't wash away as easily in the rain. Our next door neighbor collected the feral cats in the neighborhood. When we moved in, she was feeding 27 cats.  They used our mulched flower beds as their litter boxes and our front doorway reeked of cat waste. I tried a few commercial products, but nothing worked as well as red pepper flakes. |

Press and seal wrap ( do you have this where you are ? its sticky plastic cling wrap.) face up on the window ledge or even aluminum foil will keep the cats away. Or use a water bottle and gently spray him when he gets up on the ledge. |

lesley, has this been going on for awhile? I ask because this could/has have been my dog and next doors' cat last year. Sometime over the past year my dog has chilled about the cat and the cat maybe because of the lack of reaction doesn't seem to be in his face as much. The only time he goes mad now is if a cat tries to use the flower bed as a toilet, then I open the window a little and because his barks then sound louder the cat flees. Nothing like having your business interupted to make you seek another quieter location.

I remember as a kid we had this one male neighborhood cat that used the flower bed next to our porch for his potty. We used the cayenne pepper to keep it out. Also, moth balls or flakes are being used at my neighbor's as there's a roaming cat that was sitting in the middle of a flower garden. |

My dogs go crazy when the cat next door wanders through. I just pull the shade for a bit. With that said, I've done battle all summer with said cat as he likes to sit under the tree near my bird feeders. At one point I asked the hubby (in construction) if there were rug guys on the job and to bring me some tackles strips  That would work for a ledge if you can get some. I'd also consider if the area can be wet, pouring vinegar on it before you go out, maybe some cayenne pepper to add to the mix. I love cats, but I love it when people keep their cats indoors  |

I came here for advice a while back- the neighbor cat was hacking up his fur balls on my porch furniture. Foil was recommended and did the trick. I would just close some in the window and wrap it around the sill. It should keep him away and a cheap solution. |

Thanks everyone for your advice, lots of good ideas there. I think I'll try foil to start with, basically because I have lots in the cupboard. As Dennis only goes onto the window ledge when I'm not here, it might be a while before I find out if it stops the sadistic little... darling.  |
