Truthfully I have forgotten what he said about Douglas, but he did speak as if he were still alive.
ETA: one of the problems in Puerto Rico was/is the Jones Act. DT has only suspended it for 10 days and that was just the other day. With Harvey and Irma he suspended it right away. But they have always and can still get supplies over land. Puerto Rico can never get supplies over land, they are dependent on ships. In today's world there are not as many USA registered ships so Puerto Rico citizens pay higher prices for many goods.

The Washington Post provided some background on Mayor Cruz.
"Carmen Yulín Cruz Soto told the world of the “horror” she had witnessed in the flooded streets, which she had been walking ever since the storm, in a place she expects to have no power for half a year.
Until then, she had not been a well-known politician outside the island, which many mainland Americans don’t even know is a U.S. territory.
But after Cruz criticized Washington’s response to the hurricane this week — “save us from dying” — President Trump decided to size her up on Twitter.
“Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan,” he wrote Saturday. The Democrats must have gotten to her.
Since the president brought it up, we present below the historical record of the leadership abilities of Cruz, before and after the storm.
The island
Cruz is, in some ways, a lifelong politician: class president in eighth grade; student council president in high school.
Like many Puerto Ricans, she left the island to pursue opportunities on the U.S. mainland, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science at Boston University and a master’s degree in public management and policy at Carnegie Mellon.
She stayed on the mainland for many years afterward, according to her official biography, and worked her way up to the position of human resources director at several companies, including Scotiabank and the Treasury Department."
Maybe she should run for president!

I saw this coming. I saw the mayor begging for help last night and wondered how Fox,Trump and his minions (what I call Trump supporters) would spin this. You should see the comments from the minions under the story on Yahoo. If someone,(talking to you DC republicans AND democrats) doesn't stop this I see a civil war on the horizon. You would think/hope as humans people would decry this cluster#uck but the vile comments are pretty even with those support of PR. I know Fox is the rah rah we love Trump channel but come on. Do they have any decent human beings at that station? Shepard Smith seems to be about the only one.

Yep. I studied Classics. Nobody got it or condemned it at the time- that was left to History. Pity DT doesn't read that or care about that though- History (the cap is intentional) cannot be summarized on one sheet of paper in 9 bullet points or less. I don't think History will be kind to the Trump administration. The incompetence and corruption will be chronicled and studied for years to to come. it is too bad he is older and probably won't be around for that

My take on what the mayor was complaining about was the bureaucracy. How FEMA was telling people they had to register ONLINE how the hospitals were told to send their request for supplies ONLINE. How do you do that without a power grid? FEMA reps were not giving her a solution for that. She did say FEMA was making their way to the remote areas BUT they were just going to assess damage then leaving. Why were they not bring emergency supplies on the trucks with them? They are traveling in EMPTY trucks. They should load the trucks with,at the least, cases of water and MRE for these "assessment visits" I have already emailed my Congressman and we all need to let our voices heard.Like we did with the health-care debacle. Oh hey. I'm gonna get a message to Jimmy Kimmel. He seems to have a pretty loud voice that gets heard.

Ironically, I just finished re-reading Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. It's a stain on this country that at times it feels like we haven't come that far since it was first published in 1845. Didn't Trump say (Frederick Douglas)was doing great things now? Yes, he did indeed. As a matter of fact, he's just now starting to be recognized for his good deeds. According to our oh so esteemed commander in chief. I'll admit to wishing I could be a fly on the wall when the unlucky person nominated to share with Trump when he gets these things wrong. I tend to picture Trump still not understanding, not believing the poor sap, or it going in one ear and out the other. Or possibly all 3 at once.

According to this article, POTUS did everything quick and right, it's those on the ground, the front lines so to speak, messing things up! insider.foxnews.com/amp/article/58258I'm so confused, this country rages about being patriotic and standing in support of the troops, and now the troops are the problem helping with disaster relief? Even the newly named 3 star General in charge acknowledged there were not enough assests in place once the ports and airports were opened to get aid distribution up and running. [ And how can that be when the WH says "it's a good news story" and POTUS tweets "an amazing job is being done in Puerto Rico. Great people!" Article: Curt Schilling traveled to Puerto Rico to assist with Hurricane Maria relief efforts, and said the destruction looks like looks like "an atom bomb that didn't take the bodies." Hurricane Maria slammed Puerto Rico on Sep. 20, bringing much of the U.S. commonwealth to the ground. Compounding the situation, relief efforts are not coming together well, the former major league baseball star told "Fox & Friends." "All have said that the president did everything in a pace that they've never seen before as far as him releasing money and releasing assets in to these theaters," Schilling said. "The execution on the ground has been horrifying in some cases." Article continues below "I'm a student of military history. I've never seen anything like this," he commented, adding that the southeast side of the island is totally destroyed. "There are towns that are gone." "I've seen the best and the worst of humanity in the last 48 to 72 hours, and it's terrifying," Schilling said. Schilling's hurricane relief project, Operation Bullpen has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash. President Trump will visit Puerto Rico and assess the destruction on Tuesday.

Hm. It's so confusing. He was so happy and impressed with the job performances of Greg Abbott and Rick Scott, but he seems to be so angry and disgusted with Carmen Yulín Cruz and the people of Puerto Rico. What could the difference be? Nope. He's definitely not a racist, misogynistic pig. We're just imagining that. Abbott and Scott are republicans - Carmen Cruz is not Also, Abbott and Scott "look like him" aka white men in power, she does not, and she speaks spanish. However, imho, she is showing FAR more leadership than Trump, or Abbott (don't know enough about Scott to comment), she is out in the streets, while she has no home herself, doing what she can to help her citizens. More power to her!

I am a Conservative... when will the LEFT ever sit down and be quiet for a few years..,. Oh no you didn't. SIT DOWN AND BE QUIET?? This is about human suffering. It should in no way be about politics. Well, this is kinda what I've been seeing in comments on other sites from Trump minions. There really are Americans out there who want everyone not like them to just die. Just go away. Don't even think about trying to cross our borders for a chance at a better life. Don't live a happy life with love if the other person is the same sex as you. Don't speak out. Don't complain. Where have we seen this before? Hmmmm Nazi Germany? North Korea?Jim Crow South? But they aren't racist. Riiiiiiight.

He is the biggest fucking piece of shit we've ever had in our government. Puerto Rico is an American territory, we should be helping there as much, if not more than we did/are in Houston and Florida. The news should be covering it daily like we did the other two, but even they are having trouble. People are dying. Figure it the fuck out. never in my life would I think I'd see someone calling an US pres a POS and so many people readily agreeing. Including me- infuriating, sickening as well as saddening.

I am a Conservative... when will the LEFT ever sit down and be quiet for a few years..,. I think the issue here is not who is RIGHT or LEFT, but an island commonwealth with 3.4 million US citizens who have no food, no water, no electricity, and no communication. Our president is being criticized for a slow response to this disaster. He has tweeted and said some very tone-deaf remarks towards PR in general and the San Juan mayor. Edit - by the way, my label is American.

Trump can't accept brown people and women calling him outBy Issac Bailey Updated 3:41 PM ET, Sat September 30, 2017 (CNN)Nothing in the tweets President Donald Trump sent out Saturday morning criticizing the people of Puerto Rico and the commonwealth's female mayor revealed anything new about his character. But his supporters' continued defense of him in the face of such behavior revealed theirs. That's a bigger threat to our democracy than anything Trump could do, except start WWIII. Trump is a small man who has been given a big job for which he has no real qualifications because he is a rich white man in a country that has long believed rich white men are, by default, always the most qualified candidates. He was born wealthy and was bailed out time and again after misusing or squandering that wealth. As the horrific humanitarian crisis arising from hurricanes developed on his watch, he took the time to fly back to one of his golf courses, which has become his most consistent act during his presidency. No one in Hollywood could sell such a fantastical-sounding tale, and yet it is real life America, 2017. But as much as we want to focus on Trump -- whose tweet about Puerto Ricans supposedly wanting everything "done for them" harks back to the claims that Trump said black people had a lazy trait (Trump later denied saying this) -- this is no longer about him. We know who he is; we always have. This is about the roughly 63 million Americans who put him in office. more at following link.... www.cnn.com/2017/09/30/opinions/critics-made-by-people-of-color-and-women-trump-bailey-opinion/index.html

I am a Conservative... when will the LEFT ever sit down and be quiet for a few years..,. People are suffering in Puerto Rico. They are dying! So I hope people on the left don't sit down and shut up. In fact, people on the right should be joining them in the outrage over Trump and his tweets. This is about human decency. Not whether you are liberal or conservative. The Bush administration made some mistakes during Katrina. Bush was not perfect. But he would have never behaved the way Trump is. He had empathy for people who were suffering. Not narcissist Trump.

trump is mentally defective so anything he says rolls right off of me and I just don't listen to it. The people that I HATE are the republican representatives who are sitting there like the fools they are and not doing one thing to protect the American people from this lunatic. I also have a deep and abiding hatred for the people who are still making excuses for and are still loyal to the republicans. They are despicable pieces of shit. The wonderful republicans in the House again just voted against NJ/NY area continued help for Sandy and many people are still out of their homes... www.nj.com/politics/index.ssf/2017/09/house_republicans_bash_nj_while_helping_other_stat.html#incart_2box_nj-homepage-featured New Jersey turning into a political punching bag for Republicans in Washington Updated on September 30, 2017 at 7:12 AMPosted on September 30, 2017 at 7:00 AM WASHINGTON -- When some Republicans sought to strip out $900 million earmarked for the Gateway Tunnel, House GOP leaders called a vote on it. Ditto when they tried to end a $1.6 billion program for New Jersey and other northeastern states with extensive mass transit. But Republican leaders refused to vote on giving Hurricane Sandy victims the same tax breaks as those suffering losses from recent major storms.
To some Garden State residents, it's as House Republicans see New Jersey is a political punching bag to be bashed, with its federal funding diverted elsewhere. "It's rather unbelievable that our colleagues on the other side could stoop this low," said Rep. Donald Norcross, D-1st Dist. "I've got to believe there's only one reason -- we're a blue state." Rep. Tom MacArthur, R-3rd Dist., said that's the hand New Jersey lawmakers are dealt. "There are plenty of inconsistencies around here," MacArthur said. "I have to do what I can do within the realm that I can control. I don't make the rules; I have to work within them." There is more at the link above... My comments: McArthur is the Rep that drafted the earlier health care bill, so I'm not so pleased with him, but the House should be pleased, but then he was screwing us in NJ there.... ETA: it's in the article, but NJ only gets back $38 for each $100 paid in taxes. And the mayor of San Juan seems to be a strong outspoken WOMAN! He don't like that!! Just as a point of accuracy, Puerto Rico doesn't pay federal income tax.
