Wow. That's really funny. I bet they regret that move!

Between paying the GG in product before the public could get it, and having a "secret" site to gossip about all their customers (- anyone remember that fiasco? I caught a small bit of it, but was shaking my head at their stupidity) it's a surprise that it lasted as long as it did.

It is a wonder they hung on for as long as they did given this info!

Yeah, there was some stuff said, but not much. What the public saw during that slip up was a blue moon occurrence. It was scrapbook business, layout sharing, private life sharing Message board. I'm being honest too. There were many many nice gg's. I left with many friends, ladies with good hearts.

I didn't know that...honestly it would have never occurred to me because that seems like a really bad business model. Oh wait...it was. Agreed. Lack of stock is why I rarely shopped there. It's why a lot of people didn't shop there.

And, don't forget, there were other private boards aside from the Garden Girl board. They were just duller and didn't get any attention.

Maybe we will see a lot of the "old timers", since their Board is gone too?

Sitting here like a therapist, with my chin on my hand, saying, "Mm. Go on. Tell me more. It might help if you unburden yourself."

Wow. I remember how excited I'd get when the new projects would go up, but I'd be so bummed that everything was out of stock. I agree with the others--not a smart business move.

It was more when I was a GG, around 2008/2009. It seems like it was something like $50/layout, but definitely not less than $25. At that time, you had the option to be paid via credit or cash. As a digital girl, I could download whatever supplies I wanted free, so I elected for the cash. My confession: The first thing I did when I had access to the private board was try to look up the threads from GardenGirlGate, but there was only 6 months archived. My second confession: 2Ps had a generic "garden girl" login/password so that we could post on the blog, and after I left, I totally would log into the private board using that info every month or so, just to see if there was anything exciting going on. (There never really was, sadly.)

So, they had a store that was primarily used to pay the GG's and it was against the rules for us to talk about or mention other stores and their products! That would be stores with inventory we could purchase.
Yeesh......

AAARGH! But... isn't the official story that we, the customers, bad scum that we are (sorry, were) are responsible for those lovely boards going "Poof"? Aren't we supposed to be the problem? We are (were) unreasonable, not willing to spend and support.... some of us needed to be put in time out, banned, and so on. Good grief. Victim-shaming was apparently alive & well, practiced by TPTB at 2Peas. Karma.

Add to it that they had a bad habit of not paying manufacturers and quantities certainly were limited.

I knew about the credit, but I guess I never put two and two together. Lol
I believe you about the board too--having heard the same before from "those in the know." It's inevitable that some chatter about message board posters was going to happen, but I don't believe it was the intention or the norm.

I think they got in some trouble for paying in credit..maybe IRS or their accountant said that paying by credit was not good. So they switched. I can't remember but I think I was a gg around 2004?

Yikes! It's shocking that they lasted so long with that kind of practice!
I actually did shop there, back in the days when I first joined. But then they jacked up the shipping costs and decreased product availability, so it just wasn't worth it anymore.

A classic example of shooting oneself in the foot! I worked for a scrapbook store at one time creating layouts and doing classes. The owner selected the main paper I was to use. It was always paper that didn't sell well and then she would balk at my efforts to use product to enhance the pages. Like I always trim my printed paper and back it with full size solid color 12X12 cardstock. She wouldn't ok this because that cost too much. So the goal was to teach customers to produce pages as least costly as possible? This concept does not sell product! Embellishments had to be kept to a minimum too.

Ha ha, Jennifer!!! I love you & your confession. That's awesome.
GeorgiaPea, yeah, that's how it worked for every. single. LSS I designed for (and as we move a lot, I designed for a bunch). I always had to work with the paper that wasn't selling so great to help move it. Or I had to make a class or kit up out of it. Something to help move it. Which makes total sense and it really did help get the product selling.

SMDH at the fact that they actually survived that long with such a poor business model.
