For Hanukkah I send my 27 year old son little gifts for each of the 8 nights. As it was in my household when I grew up, I keep the Hanukkah gifts very manageable but meaningful (they're always mailed).
Anyhow, I'm a little stumped this year. He just this week made the move from NYC (where he's been living for 5 1/2 years) to LA. He moved with only his clothing, bedding, and Vitamix - priorities, right?!? Everything else is in storage in NYC until he decides if he's staying or moving back. Over the last few months I've picked up a few things for him that I know he'll like, but I'm (I think) 4 gifts short.
He's living in a furnished apartment with a roommate he's just met. Because this is a temporary living situation, I don't want to send him any apartment stuff. He's a VERY urban guy. Likes dressing well. Eating and drinking well, though he doesn't drink much usually. Enjoys good wine as well. Is super healthful and also works out (hard) almost every day....he likes to mix it up and in NYC did a "classpass" thing so he could do spinning, boot camp, and whatever else sparked his interest. Single. He doesn't have a car so I'm thinking one of the gifts will be an Uber GC.
Does anyone have ideas they want to throw out there for me? Even if it's not "quite right" it could spark another similar idea....so any help is appreciated. Thanks much!

My son wears men's Lululemon clothing and the pants he buys look great on him. They are not really athletic looking at all. They are more of a young person's going out pant. I would suggest a Lululemon gift card for him. That is what I will get my son I think.

Sunglasses? I can always use a spare or a hat to protect from the sun.
How about a gift card to a beach, bike rental place (if such a thing exists)? I am thinking of those awesome beach bike paths on Santa Monica beach.
Tickets for the ferry over to Catalina island?

What about tickets or passes to events, like universal studios or baseball/basketball games? Would he enjoy anything like that? What about gift cards to sporting goods stores in LA where he can get climate friendly gear? I don't know how much you want to spend. Gone are the days when chocolate coins (gelt) was enough to get them excited. ETA: Can you get gift cards for ZipCar? Does he have a license? That will be helpful if he wants to visit other parts of LA.

If he is a coffee drinker, then a package or two of specialty coffees. Movie passes, Disneyland day, a fruit basket. Good luck!!

Perhaps something from Dollar Shave Club? SO likes their razors a lot. They also have several trial kits for $5 or $7. (I don't think that is a referral link.) A lip balm, maybe one with SPF. Something like whisky stones (they chill without watering down). If there was ever a favorite candy/treat you bought him as a child, then that.

What about some nice earbuds, portable battery, nice flashlight, athletic wear, kindle, gift card for clothes, wine glasses, nice selection of cheeses to enjoy with that wine, maybe a gift basket of foods, tickets to a show, disneyland tickets, movie tickets, echo, sonos speakers, bedside lamp with usb port, anker usb hub, electronic organizer case bag, nice pen....

Thank you, there are some good ideas here I should add that I'm hesitant to purchase him a local GC or "experience" type thing, as right now I'm just not sure how long he's going to stay. He's left the door open to go back to NYC by leaving the majority of his belongings behind, and thus far he is miserable in LA. I hope he toughs it out and gives it a good go but I wouldn't be surprised to see him gone at the end of the winter. KIDS, sigh. Anyhow, keep the ideas coming

My 23 year old son and his friend moved to LA. six months ago from Chicago and NYC (so I understand the culture/lifestyle/transportation jolt).
-I know you don't want LA experiences, but he's gotta get around the city, right? My son is using public transpiration, bike, or a combo. You can gift a TAP card (fare card) by ordering at taptogo.com.
-Even short-term living could include going to the movies. My son really likes the Los Feliz movie theatre (independent, grungy, cheaper). I've looked at their website for gift cards. Looks like they sell books of paper coupons. I ended up deciding to stock up next time I'm there, but I thought about calling and asking them to mail. And there's always the bigger theatre chains.
-I have a note to myself about a good film called "Los Angeles Plays Itself," a documentary about various movie scenes filmed in LA. That wouldn't require permanent residency...and might even engender some curiosity about different local sites. You can rent/buy it on iTunes or buy a disk (whaaat?) at a site called Cinema Guild.
-Mesh bags for shopping? California is ahead of most of the rest of us, but we're all getting there so he'd use them wherever he ends up. Maybe include a vegetable brush?...a little book about how to store different fruits/veggies?... Vitamix recipes?
-Sunscreen? A hat? Maybe with a NY-centric team or logo so he can signal that he's a malcontent? LOL.

I was going to suggest sock of the month club. Socks are so in right now. I also think anything lululemon is in. Boxers, socks, my dh loves their polos. They’re soft and stretchy and wick away sweat but he can wear them out to a movie. Tix to something - like admission to universal studies if he’s trying out LA. G/c to a movie theatre Sunscreen Flip flops
Paige.

What's he doing for Thanksgiving? My sisters would like to have him over. My sister hosting lives in Hancock Park and they are a fun bunch of "orphans" who will adopt him permanently. I'll pm you.

He's got extended family in both sides in SoCal, so he's spending the day in SD with cousins on his dad's side. That said, I know he'd love to hang out with relatives of yours so thanks for the thought!
