This is my vent. Feel free to vent along with me! It's the season! So my coworkers do not have much to do. According to them, they have about max 20 hours work/week (half a day each day). They talk/gossip much of the day. I work about 60 hours a week. I work from home a couple days, but am in the office otherwise. We have cubes. The super loud coworker left (even Bose headset couldn't cover her voice) so I don't have to hear about her eczema or her preference in coffee, thank goodness. The two who are left talk relatively quietly. It doesn't bother me because my headset covers the noise. D, the one next to me, has a lot of family issues - each of her kids has 2-3 kids and each of those kids has a different parent. Her son has been in jail and basically D is raising her grandkids. I tell you this because she is on the phone with one or the other or some lawyer at least a few times a day. D and I always got along relatively well until I left my manager last December. D took that to heart (the manager cried when she told the rest of the team) and has been angry with me for "making" the manager cry. She barely says hello, and only when other people are around does she even bother. I have several calls I'm on each week, but only one where I actually have to say anything other than a minor comment ("Really Red is on" or "That's scheduled for next Tuesday" or the like). In the 30-minute call I probably talk 5-10 minutes max. A few months ago, the Loud One was still here and the three of them were having a Loud Conversation over their cubes (we are in a 4-cube area). At the end of my call, D said in the most obnoxious voice (she has a condescending regular tone), "Do you KNOW how LOUD you were?" I seriously was horrified at first. I said I was sorry and as soon as I said that, I am like WTF? This is a work call, I was loud for 10 mns max and they are loud every day, most of the day!! Then I said "At least I was loud on a work call" and I left it at that. So my manager said D came to her and said I was too loud on my weekly call. It is relatively quiet in the office these days and I think I probably was loud. We are a call center, so a lot of people are loud, but they are on the other side of the office. Our side doesn't take too many calls. I fully admit I was probably too loud. But it was WORK and it was a maximum of 10 minutes, over a 30-mn period. My manager was great about it, but FFS! I have to hear her stupid children issues and her stupid everything issues day in and day out and I talk 10mns a week and that's what she gets mad at?! What would her manager say to me if I went to tell her that I don't want to hear D's private information all the time? She'd probably tell me to mind my own business! So dodo D, stop posting all your damn religious crap about making the world a better place, and maybe take some religious advice and act kindly for once! I think I am just pissed that I did so many kind and helpful things for her prior to me leaving the manager and once the manager was upset with me, D stopped any semblance of work niceness. I don't care if you don't like me, but stop being pissy all the damn time. Phew. I feel better now Thank you for listening!

If an employee came to me and told me another employee was too loud on a work call, I'd tell the 2nd employee to wear headphones. I'd let the first employee know that they were welcome to reserve a conference room, but that they didn't have to do so.
My work area is WAY too quiet, and I encourage chatter and calls as a way to provide an environment where people can collaborate.

My work vent is management. We all know they are moving our district to another state, but management continues to pretend it's not happening.
They have moved two divisions already, so do they think we are stupid?

Um, you had to be loud to talk over their incessant chatter. Volunteer to have your workday taped so your boss can get to the root of the problem.

I have two co-workers that are driving me bonkers.
The loud eater to the right of me (cube environment). He eats a lot, loudly, complete with slurping, and chewing so loud it makes me wonder what the heck he is eating.
The loud talker across the aisle. He is so rude - he constantly calls out his team members' names and declares "Jane, come here". Never adds a please, never considers getting his butt out of his chair to go talk to them. He does this multiple times a day to many team members, including the director of his area. And they all come running! If I worked over there I'd never go running over to that little twerp. he also uses his speaker phone, loudly, and often it creates an echo effect. I dislike this person a lot.
Thank you for letting me share.

I don't have a work vent, but I do have a school vent: APA style. I have the style guide, I have the publishing guide, and I have the Purdue OWL site and APA blog bookmarked. So why do I continually mess up every single time? Some piddling thing, like neglecting to change a hyperlink from the automatic blue to black font. Neglecting to cite a movie reference, when the whole paper is just a review of the movie so where do I even cite it? Throughout the entire paper? Things like this wake me up at 0430 in a cold sweat, unable to get back to sleep.
My last two papers got a 91 and a 95. All the points I lost were APA errors. Fuck them people.

My coworker, Sophie, is being super annoying today. Our furnaces and hot water heater are being replaced. Every single time one of the workmen goes inside, outside, in the backyard, down the basement, or to the attic, she barks at them. They've been here for almost two days and she won't shut up! There are at least six people working in here.
Ok, I work at home, and Sophie is the dog. But still, I'm sick of all the barking while I'm trying to work! If I finish up what I'm trying to do, I'm going to take tomorrow off to enjoy the kids coming home.

One committee that I sit on has conference calls once a month, that I dread. One member goes on and on and on, usually not related to the topic. Chair is trying to stop him, but it is not easy. Ugh.

I have a coworker/friend that nobody likes (she's earned the dislike, but has calmed down over the years and is still paying for her bad attitude from years ago - we get along well because I call her on her shit and she respects that and I really like her). I don't play the office politics bs, I just do my damnedest to get along with everyone here.
Anyway, another coworker recently passed on a couple tops to me that didn't fit her right, she mentioned at the time that she used to give her unwanted clothes to Bad Attitude Friend (BAF). Today, she comes to me and says "next time I give you clothes, I want you to tell BAF about it and tell me what she says" I just kindof looked at her. She goes on to "Well, I don't really care about all that anymore, but..." to which I just cocked an eyebrow. She went on a little bit flustered and mumbling but basically said never mind. It was great, I never said a single word - I swear I credit the peas with the ability to "say" so much while saying so little. Some things really DON'T require a verbal response.

This afternoon is our monthly department meeting that is a total waste of everyone's time. Typically, the information provided is of little to no use for the attendees (management stuff that doesn't affect us down here on the bottom), or information that we have already heard via other formats. My favorite? The time this meeting was used to discuss how to reduce our number of meetings because they tend to get out of hand if one is working on many projects simultaneously. You don't say...

I am really sick of the 20-somethings who have been a nurse for all of 20 minutes thinking they DESERVE a day shift schedule. Better yet, a day shift schedule with no weekends. They think seniority is unfair. They run to HR to tattle about every single perceived injustice like HR is their freaking mother. I get it. They grew up in the generation who got trophies and ribbons and pats on the head for standing upright and breathing at the same time. Get over yourself. No one but your parents think the world revolves around you. And along that line, they often take mommy or daddy to HR with them to whine. I really wish I was old enough to retire.

We used to have a girl who worked with us and did this to our receptionist all.the.time. It pissed me off. Her desk was maybe 15 feet away from the receptionist's and she wouldn't get her lazy butt out of her chair for anything. She finally got fired for that and similar lazy attitudes toward all of her work.

There really is a huge generational gap between new nurses and us old salts. They've been taught that no one is ever allowed to speak to them harshly. Such a different mindset nowadays. Partly it's for the good, but then again the entitled attitude is hard to take. There's no sense of needing to earn respect, it's just expected. I feel old just typing that out lol

Im 14 weeks away from being done, a total of 4 classes (which I just started week four of the first two) and APA format is going to be the death of me. Along with the instructors who say a website is not a valid source, yet the entire paper is based off a website. (State Boards of Nursing no less). I just cannot be done soon enough and if I never see another APA paper anything for the rest of my life, I will be happy. That sucker is going in the fire pit once Im done.

Oh I forgot my vent: To my coworkers who decided we need to do every other weekend rotation schedules....screw you. Rotating weekend shifts do not work well in general and severely mess up my life. Find a work buddy who works an opposite weekend day that you do and switch shifts with them every other weekend. Our very flexible scheduling system allows for that to happen. Then you don't screw up the rest of us who need the consistent schedules. If we switch to every other weekends, its much harder for those of us who need the consistency to find a work body and get our shifts back to the consistent days. Who thinks rotating shift work is okay? ugh. (im probably in the minority with this feeling and that is okay but going to a rotating weekend schedule severely messes up my school schedule and I cannot afford that extra stress)

I think I only have two nursing classes left after the two I'm taking now and the rest are math and one history class. The end is in sight! Still, I bet I graduate without ever fully understanding APA.

Ahhh, the power of silence. Your example illustrates it so perfectly. It works almost every time. Just stand there quietly and let the other person founder as they babble to fill that silence. They'll hoist themselves with their own petard almost every time.

OP I feel your pain. I work on a telephone help desk in an open-plan office, with headsets that cover one ear. Other co-workers talk so loudly that I have to stick a finger in the ear without the headset to hear my calls. My callers can hear my co-workers talking, they are so loud. So the co-workers can't hear so they shout over the noise, and that just raises the volume and increases the problem. Only 3 of the team of 13 are really loud. They have no idea, or if they do, they don't do anything about it. It's a tough one.

And along that line, they often take mommy or daddy to HR with them to whine. I really wish I was old enough to retire. OMG..YOU have got to be kidding!! What does HR say? So a long time ago , in galaxy far far away, when I was young. I was unceremoniously dumped from a job in a store that my aunt (an important person thre) grandmother, cousins worked. The woman in charge never said a word to me, not one single word, even when I went in to check the schedule and my name was still on the schedule. I went in to work and there was somebody in my spot. Then woman in charged laughed at me and said that I was no longer working there. ?? I was on the schedule, but she drew a big red line through it , after I had checked it. She lied to her boss that I had seen this schedule. I left crying. I didn't know this, but my dad showed up the next day to the store, he was friends with the store manager. The store manager discovered that the schedule gal did lie. She wanted to embarrass me. I did get another position in the store , but the schedule gal never did move up into department management.

I am sick and tired of listening to my boss gripe about another manager in our company who she feels is incompetent. I can't do anything about it, and most of the stuff she complains about I am not involved in.
