Question: Is it normal to be yelled at, at work?

Uh. No. Never. Ever.

Not in my place of business! As mentioned, document. You should not have to put up with that type of workplace abuse.

No. Can't think of any situation where it might be--unless you yelled to stop an accident.

I'd leave that toxic environment.

No. And if it is a common occurrence, it might rise to the level of creating a hostile work environment and be worthy of a lawsuit.

I'll add to the chorus. Unless you are working as a yodeler, yelling is never appropriate at work.

Also, if you are at boot camp then your boss  who is a drill sergeant is allowed to yell at you.  However, in any other job the answer would  hell no.  That is called working in a hostile environment and not allowed.  Do you have an HR department?  This needs to be documented.  How much do you like your job? If my bosses yelled at me I'd be finding a new job asap and telling the two jerks to stop yelling immediately.  "When you yell I feel bullied and I won't tolerate it!"

Depends on the job. Sports coach? Sorry yelling happens. Military? Yep folks yell at young recruits in training.

I have some cranky doctors back in the day who yelled and threw hissy fits. Appropriate probably not? But in one instance a med student was about to make a fatal mistake.

I had a yeller boss. I'd heard him yelling at people on the production floor, but when he yelled at me I remained silent because he was obviously out of control. Later when he was calmer I stated my position, that I treated him with respect and I'd like him to do the same. Then I left without asking for a response. He never yelled at me again but one time he said "I have to stomp on you once in a while or you'd take over, you'd have me asking you for lunch money". I smiled at him and said "Wow, I didn't know I had that much power". And a week later he said "Ask the comptroller to cut me a check for $150.00 and then take it to the bank when you make the deposit and get it cashed". I did NOT say "lunch money?" but I could tell by the look on his face he knew I was thinking it. I really liked that man and still dream frequently that I've gone back to working for him.

No. It's not normal. I've seen it happen, but not in my current setting. I do not find it acceptable for adults to yell at each other. 

No! I took a job where the boss yelled at me the first day over something trivial. I kept job searching. When I left after 3 weeks, other staff members realized it wasn’t normal and quickly left as well.

I would think this happens much more frequently in a small mom-and-pop type owner structure than a corporate environment with an HR department. I would leave a job where I was disrespected like that and I would make it clear why I was leaving on my final day, as well.

No, neither is hitting on, throwing things, threats of violence, propositions, information about vasectomies, boredom in the bedroom and other harassment. Ever. See HR soon. If need be, contact an employment lawyer for more information.

It's not normal but I've had it happen. My last job was as a case manager in the TANF (temporary aid for needy families) program. We had a morning meeting every day at 8:05 and we're yelled at almost daily, followed by emails demanding immediate response. The job was impossible to do correctly because of all of the demands from our company and the state. Every day some employee was crying because of stress and frustration. I was a veteran and was only there 1.5 years. I left for a new job in Sept. Best decision ever. No one should be treated that way.

I am a teacher.
Under the previous principal, yes.
Under this one, no.
Although parents still yell during parent teacher conferences and sometimes IEP meetings. We just have to take it. A previous assistant principal, if we were lucky to have him at our meeting, would stop the meeting and tell the parents we would resume on another day when they were ready to treat his staff with respect. He left because of the previous principal.
