I'm so sick of having a cold. We both got sick at the same time, then got better after five days and then came down with each other's colds. Bleh.
A friend told me to use buckwheat honey. Has anyone tried this? Got any other remedies to boost my immune system? Right now i'm taking DayQuil and NyQuil.

I'm sorry you are sick. Colds do seem to drag on.
It takes 14 days to get over a cold if you treat it, 2 weeks if you don't!
Honestly, I don't think there is anything you can do except rest and drink plenty of fluids, once you have a cold.

Constant hand washing/sanitizing. Keep hands away from face. Big yes to sudafed. I also have friends who swear by the elderberry supplements to boost their immune systems (brand name: Sambucol). My DH has been sick since the beginning of November! Has been to MD and it's just different viruses. Feel better soon!!

Unfortunately we can only treat our annoying symptoms. I have had sinus issues for months.

Ah, yes. The Boomerang Crud. We've had good results with Zicam. My husband used to swear by Zicam until he developed "overdose" symptoms from it that included nerve tingling and numbness. He had only taken it for a day or so that time, so I don't 'know if it was some kind of overaccumulation of the zinc in his system or what. It took a couple of weeks for the symptoms of that to clear. If it works for you, great, I just wanted to share that info.

after about 7 days make sure you both get a new tooth brush! It can harbor germs and re-infect you.

Disinfect your dishwasher. Lysol your towels and bedding.
Put your pillows in the dryer if you can.
Don't touch your face.
Wash your hands from your elbows down.
Clean your phone, door knobs and car handles. Light switches. Don't touch public door handles.

I feel your pain, I came down with a cold on Christmas Day and I'm still battling it. I'm exhausted from coughing and my nose feels raw. My husband has a milder version of the same thing. Dayquil seems to help some. The clerk at Trader Joe's recommended their Lemon Ginger Echinacea juice, and though it hasn't cured me, it certainly is soothing when heated up. The ginger really heats up the nose and throat in a nice way. Other than that, I think the only solution is to disinfect every flat surface in your house...and I don't have the energy for that yet.

This year has just been awful for cold symptoms. I had two almost back to back. SO is now on his second one. They are taking the full amount of time to get over, and then there's some post-infection response that is keeping the cough around.
SO will use a nasal spray (like Dristan) to help with congestion. I also take an NSAID (advil, naproxen, but NOT tylenol): I'd read that sometimes, you're not feeling congestion, you're actually feeling swelling of your nasal passages, so an NSAID can help to cut down on that. I suppose if you don't want to medicate more than needed, an ice pack on your face for a few minutes every hour might be a good alternative.
I will try to increase my orange juice intake when I'm ill-- I don't drink it usually, but it feels like magic tonic when I'm sick. LOL. I have a sore throat, I will normally also drink hot tea and hot cocoa-- anything warm to soothe it-- but the first cold I had this season was SO PAINFUL that I had to keep with cold drinks because the numbing of the cold was better.
If coughing is keeping you up, the only thing that has ever helped me get to sleep with that symptom is vaporub on my chest. Then I curl up and tuck my nose and mouth down so I'm inhaling the vapors (I prefer to sleep on my side or stomach-- if you sleep on your back, pull your covers up over your nose and kind of make a tent for the vapors). SO sometimes takes nyquil cough, but it did nothing for me.
Also useless to me: honey, delsym, mucinex, and whatever my last prescription was for a cough suppressant pill. None of it works.
Feel better soon!

after about 7 days make sure you both get a new tooth brush! It can harbor germs and re-infect you. Not if it's a virus. www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/explainer/2011/02/can_your_toothbrush_make_you_sick.htmlFrom the article: " Once you've been infected with a particular strain of a virus, you develop antibodies that make the likelihood of re-infection very low. Even if the virus were still hanging out on your toothbrush after you recovered—colds and flus can survive there in an infective state for anywhere from a few hours to three days—those antibodies should keep you from contracting the same illness twice. Your toothbrush is no more dangerous while you're still sick, since the viral load on the bristles is negligible compared with what's already in your system." Although I guess if your toothbrushes are living next to each other, cross-contamination IS a possibility. (My toothbrush lives alone.)

When my hubby or I are sick, I do not sleep in bed with him. Other than that, I wash my hands all the freaking time. If someone is sick I sanitize all the door handles and clean the bathrooms real good. Hadn't thought about cleaning the dishwasher, but that sounds like a good idea.

Not a remedy, but Chloraseptic throat spray is great for numbing your throat so you won't cough as much.

ETA: It's called the "Medicine Ball" and it was just added to the official menu. Medicine Ball AKA Honey Citrus Mint Tea. My Starbucks is out of 1/2 the ingredients because so many people are down with this horrible bug, myself included. Currently doing Mint Majesty tea with extra honey, Flonase nasal spray, Advil cold & sinus & Mucinex or Delsym (alternating). It’s HORRIBLE. I’m on day 3 and it’s not any better!

Gargle incessantly with the yellow Listerine -- the other colors don't seem to be as strong. I've found that if I use it at the first sign of a cold, I can sometimes stop it in its tracks.

I am a substitute teacher, in and out of many classrooms and exposed to various illnesses going through each classroom. I've hit upon what I find to help me the most:
when I first start feeling that tickle leading to a sore throat, I start taking airborne tablets (chewable) and zicam (the one in a little tube with a qtip). Sometimes, I never get the cold at all and other times, it wraps up much quicker.

Do you have a good Vietnamese restaurant nearby? I swear by a big bowl of pho with several slices of jalapeño in it. I feel like that broth could cure anything!

Lots of rest and Garlic. Fresh, raw garlic sliced, dipped in honey. Eat with a little good rye bread if it's too strong a flavor for you. We joke that it kills all that ails you, but it does seem to make a cold end sooner and especially helps a sore throat. It's cheap and most people have it in the house. If nothing else, eating lots of garlic will keep others away so they won't catch what you have!
I used to make garlic honey by infusing honey with garlic for a few weeks and then straining. It's a weird taste but works wonders on a sore throat.
Hope you Feel better soon.

I started noticing a scratchy throat on Christmas morning, and I really hoped it was just from pushing myself too hard making last minute gift ideas. Unfortunately, by the following morning, I realized it was a full-blown cold. I've been sleeping a ridiculous number of hours each day and drinking plenty of fluids, and I think I am finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. With my fibromyalgia, every illness or injury is magnified and seems to either take longer or hurt more than it should. I've done a lot of movie watching this week as a result.
