Since Trump and many of his followers call themselves Christians, and believe they are bringing Christian values back to our country, can someone point me to the verse in the Bible where Jesus says to the poor, sick, and needy that they should go back to the sh*tholes they came from? Yeah... Then there's this....Many of the mainline Protestant denominations follow what's called The Revised Common Lectionary. The Catholic church has one also with slightly different readings. It's a three-year cycle of daily readings -- one from the Old and one from the New testaments, and one from Psalms. The readings are chosen by season. The idea is to ensure that churches read through much of the bible and that preachers don't cherry-pick only the verses they want to preach on. Churches are not obligated to use the lectionary but most do. So the preacher won't know what will be happening in the world before they start preparing their sermon for Sunday. This coming Sunday we have John 1:43-51 which includes this: "Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Nazareth was looked on as a "shithole country" by many. Could anything good come from there? Yeah, many preachers have had to revise their sermons yet again. I remember after the Charlottesville Nazi rally my pastor scrapped the entire Sunday service that he'd planned -- he stayed up half the night on Saturday rewriting prayers, choosing different music, and tossing the sermon out entirely. So we are looking forward to his comments about the shit hole country of Nazareth. A friend of mine says that the bible is trolling donald trump since this is not the first time this has happened, that the Sunday readings coincided with some stupidity of his.

Totally understandable, given the unfortunate state of affairs right now. It was actually quite a hard decision to come to, and not just for monetary reasons. This country has been really good to me and I love it almost as much as my home country, and it would have been truly an honor to be a citizen. But I just don't feel that way at the moment with all this asinine discussion about immigration. I felt like taking that kind of step at this time, would in some way be condoning the shit show in the White House. Call it my protesting line in the sand, I guess. I live in a red state, so my vote unfortunately will likely not make much of a difference anyways. If I thought it would, that would have weighed more in my decision. As a fellow Green Card/Permanent Resident, I totally agree with everything you said. I would love to have dual citizenship (Canadian/American), but honestly, right now, I just can't bring myself to do it. Maybe once this shit show of an administration is over, I'll consider it. Until then, I just can't.

Hatch wants 'detailed explanation' on Trump's 's---hole' comments BY JESSE BYRNES - 01/11/18 06:41 PM EST Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said Thursday night that he wanted a "detailed explanation" from the White House about President Trump's reported comments about accepting immigrants from "shithole countries.""I look forward to getting a more detailed explanation regarding the President’s comments. Part of what makes America so special is that we welcome the best and brightest in the world, regardless of their country of origin," Hatch said in a tweet from his office. HATCH: “I look forward to getting a more detailed explanation regarding the President’s comments. Part of what makes America so special is that we welcome the best and brightest in the world, regardless of their country of origin.” #utpol
— Senator Hatch Office (@senorrinhatch) January 11, 2018 Hatch is the senior most Republican to call on Trump to explain his comments from an Oval Office meeting Thursday with lawmakers discussing protections for immigrants from several countries, which were first reported by The Washington Post and confirmed by multiple other outlets. More at link: thehill.com/homenews/senate/368624-hatch-wants-detailed-explanation-on-trumps-s-hole-comments It's good that he has spoken out. But, what about what he said? The best and the brightest? To me, one of the defining aspects of America is that we've historically welcomed and been made strong by those who are not the "best" by the standards of Trump, Hatch and Co. (i.e., not already wealthy and/or well-educated). It sets us apart from most other countries. The immigrant spirit of striving for a better life is the very basis of our national ethos. Or it used to be. Now "we" view those hardworking immigrants as a bunch of criminals and freeloaders, because they're poor and brown-skinned.

I would wager that most of our ancestors who came here were not designated "the best and the brightest" when they came. That is why they came. Because corrupt oligarchies - the likes of which Trump and co would like to establish here - DEEMED THEM refuse, waste, dregs, drains, etc. They came here to prove they were not.
JUST LIKE THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF THOSE COMING NOW!!
Same shitty thinking, different white racist overlord spouting it.

Reactions from shit hole countries...
Maybe someone already linked this article. I'm in a hurry (to get to Costco, oh joy ) and don't want to scroll back. There's also an interesting link in the article about how "shit hole countries" is being translated around the world. I went to the French newspaper Le Monde and read some of the comments and it was interesting to read that the first basic translation of "shit hole" isn't as strong as we view it. Then someone who knew English idioms came into the comments to explain more about what it connotes. There's also another article -- or maybe it was a Twitter thing -- where people are posting photos from their shit hole countries. I think that started from Nigeria after trump made the comment about how the Nigerians wouldn't want to go back to their huts. ugh. Of course there are still huts in many parts of rural Africa. But there are plenty of huts here in the United States also -- think of the living conditions that exist in rural areas of the south, or in Appalachia or in inner cities all over the country. Those are our "huts".

Rachel Maddow just reported that the Haitian government has 'summoned an American official to explain Trump's remarks' ...yup, he sure is Making America Great Again, isn't he?!? He'll make America great again when his ass is impeached and removed from office. I’m not so sure which is worse the trump circus or Pence & his religious beliefs interfering with laws

All over the world they are having trouble finding the right words to translate the offending word. ‘Countries that are dirty like toilets,’ and other ways Trump’s profanity was translated abroad
By Samantha Schmidt January 12 at 6:59 AM Deciding what to do with the remarks — and whether to censor them in news reports — was tough enough for the press in the United States. It was, after all, a vulgar phrase not usually fit for a newspaper or television. * The main daily newspapers in El Salvador, one of the countries maligned by the president, went with the translation “agujeros de mierda,” which essentially means “holes of s‑‑‑.” * Alex Segura, Washington correspondent for EFE, tweeted about the debate with his editors over how to translate “the pearl of the day from Trump.” Other options they considered for the phrase? “S‑‑‑ty countries,” “unclean countries,” and “pigsties,” he said.* * Most languages have some equivalent for the first part of the combination — or at least some profane variation of a word for excrement. “It’s a bodily function,” said House, who is a professor at the University of Hamburg. Hole, by itself, is also easy enough. * “s‑‑‑ty countries.” * South Korean media are having to spell out "shithole" in English today * And the lists goes on...... www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2018/01/12/countries-that-are-dirty-like-toilets-and-other-ways-trumps-profanity-was-translated-abroad/?utm_term=.07532aaf61f2&wpisrc=nl_az_most&wpmk=1

oh, joy- you know, as President, he's making history in SO many ways--- just not in GOOD ways! I'm pretty certain this circumstance has NEVER come up in recent history, at least-- foreign news organizations trying to figure out how to translate PROFANITY from the President of the US. And kids having to be censored from the President's language... he'll be remembered in history, that's for sure. (not the way he wants to be, though.)

Then this man took office. It broke my heart as I thought people were so much better than to cast a vote for/condone this man's deplorable behaviour. Now I'm ashamed and embarrassed. I no longer share with people that I have my citizenship. Although I received my citizenship before Trump took office I feel dirty, as though I've done something wrong. :-(

Pence-y is awfully quiet about his buddy's 'shithole' remarks www.politico.com/story/2018/01/12/pence-trump-shithole-silence-338496"Pence’s office has ignored repeated requests for comment in the wake of President Donald Trump’s explosive comments on Thursday deriding Haiti and African nations as “shithole countries” and saying the United States should increase immigration to the U.S. from countries like Norway." I wonder what 'Mother' thinks.

But they're hardly going to impeach both of them. And given how much of an embarrassment Trump has been, it may be a very small victory.

First, I want to say I voted for Clinton. I despise Trump and cannot believe he actually became president. I was born and raised in the US. Trump has been an embarrassment to this country. I'd like to see him impeached. That said, I love this country and despite Trump being president, there is a lot of good here. There are wonderful, caring people. Lots of great opportunities. But to be honest, to read the posts by sassyangel and missfrenchjessica, it really bothers me. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and thoughts, I know. But there's something about non citizens being here in this country and reaping benefits ( I assume there is some benefit to them being here, or they wouldn't stay) all the while saying how they wouldn't seek citizenship right now. Sassy angel said it's her way of protesting. I say, if you want to protest, why would you stay? I'd never say the US is the best country. We certainly have our flaws. But there is a lot of good in this country. Don't come here to reap the benefits. and then bad mouth it in the process.

BUT we're having a discussion here. People are expressing their opinions. I don't think it's right to expect that some people will just shut up and keep their opinions to themselves, because someone else might be offended by it. I think we need honesty here more than a veneer of polite gratitude. And I'm sure that both of them are contributing members of society in this country, not just receivers of the benefits of living here. America benefits from immigration, just as the immigrants (hopefully) benefit, too.

News anchor Tom Brokaw suggested on Saturday that Sens. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and David Perdue (R-Ga.) should get hearing aids after they said they did not recall President Trump referring to Haiti, El Salvador and African nations as "shithole countries" during a White House meeting.

Whilst I find those “reviews” justly apt, given the circumstances, I do hope they don’t backfire on the staff who will be no doubt be working hard as normal. I would hate for DJT to read them and not understand they are the consequence of his words but think they were directed at poorly working staff.

Surely, if they are working they are paying taxes and spending dollars? And if they are married, their spouse is paying taxes? In that case it's the U.S that is reaping the benefits of having able bodied citizens who are contributing to society. If I decided to come and work in your country, it wouldn't be to "reap the benefits".

I think you might be misunderstanding what ”reap the benefits” means. It doesn’t mean something was taken without being earned or deserved or that something wasn’t mutually beneficial. There would be no reason to go to another country to live and/or work if it wasn’t somehow advantageous to do so.
This doesn’t mean that I necessarily agree exactly with frenchie, but I, too, understand her sentiment.

I don't think so. -- Of course they, and anyone who comes here to live/work/study (vs. a plain tourist) is "reaping the benefits". I mean, why would they have come if there wasn't some benefit? But presumably they're also contributing something to this country. If I weren't an American citizen and I wanted to become one I sure as heck wouldn't want my citizenship letter signed by trump. There are also shades of "bad mouthing". Saying that trump is an unhinged lunatic (wait, is that an oxymoron?) is only stating the truth. Saying that someone wouldn't want to be a citizen right now is not bad mouthing it's only stating their truth. A person doesn't lose their ability to speak truth when they go to another country, especially not if they're permanent enough to be able to be applying for citizenship.
