My Frenchie is terrified of fireworks and I am not looking forward to it at all. He has to take a sedative, but he still barks and paces for about 2-3 hours before he finally conks out. Holidays around here are not good!

The fireworks have started here a few weeks ago so it has been challenging to get our Bella to not be scared at night. She is spending lots of time under the bed - her go to place when she gets scared. I think it has been hard with them being so unpredictable, so I share your dread. This year, we are also pet sitting for a friend of ours and she's a barker with little noises so this year should be very interesting.

Luckily, my dog isn't afraid. The past couple of nights, we've heard some fireworks going off in the neighborhood, and she is 'concerned' (this is out of the ordinary, should I bark?) but not frightened.

I'm dreading it too! My dog isn't scared, it just pisses her off and she bark and barks and barks. I used to love fireworks before I was a dog owner!

Our 2 shih tzus freak out every year it doesn't matter that they are illegal in Iowa, people shoot them off for several weeks after the 4th. It makes for a long July.

Yeah, mine runs to the basement and tries to crawl under the workbench and hide with the cat - he's not too successful seeing as he's a big guy and there's only 6 inches of clearance!

My dogs are not bothered by fireworks. I'm not sure what I'd do if they were.

My little Pom is terrified of all loud noises including fireworks. We bought her a thundershirt and it works miracles. It does best if it is put on her at least 15 minutes before the storm/fireworks, etc. start up. It might be worth checking on.

My dog is terrified of fireworks. The thundershirt does help. Poor thing -- her birthday is the 4th of July. It's the most miserable day of the year for her.

Our Maltese doesn't even flinch. He has sat outside with us while people are shooting off fireworks.

Our dog gets freaked by fireworks and there's an amusement park in our town that has them every Fri, Sat and Sun during the Summer. We usually turn on the A/C and fans to help muffle the sound. She tries to climb up on us, but she's too big to be a lap dog.

YES! Our Australian Cattle Dog shakes like she's having a seizure. The Thundershirt does not help. It's so bad that she starts to get anxious as it gets dark and we have to pick her up to take her outside before we go to bed, she is too afraid to go out.

Our pug hates the fireworks! I absoutely dread the days leading to the 4th and the days afterwards too!!!! I have to hold him wrapped up in a blanket for him to settle down. He isn't too keen on thunder and airplanes either.

Both of my dogs aren't afraid of the fireworks, but they do go crazy barking when they hear them. I'm not looking forward to that!

YES! We have 3 in the house. We have a thundershirt for one and it works pretty good. I also give them a natural calming supplement and it makes it a bit more bearable for them. Oh, I also turn on the air and turn the tv up very loud. UGH, I used to love the 4th

Our mutt is terrified of loud noises. We also have a guy around the corner who fires his CANON! every hour or so.
We'll give her a sedative and hope it works.

My papillon isn't bothered by fireworks or thunder. I did get her a thundershirt just in case, but can't use it because she makes a very very loud unearthly schreaching noise at the sound of the Velcro when I take it off.

My dogs don't like fireworks either but they qill not be close enough to idyl be an issue. We turn on music kind of loud and that is usually enough to mask the sound for my pups.

Oh yes, our 12 yo Shepherd mix is absolutely terrified of fireworks. As she's gotten older, it's gotten worse. She hates any kind of bang or pop sound - even the sound of me chopping veggies on a cutting board.

They've already started here, too. When she hears them, she doesn't so much freak out as she wants to huddle up against me, etc. I was just talking about this on another thread--She's been under the weather for awhile and we finally got her on the road to recovery and tonight was the first night she was raring to go out and walk--and the some fire crackers went off and she just wanted to sit on my lap. So mad and sad for my little sweetheart.

For us, it's July 1. Our new pup seems to be afraid of noises like that, so I'm sure we will be having some issues that night. And of course, we have to get up the next morning at 5:15 for work ..... Should be fun. ugh.

Yes! We rescued Tucker (some sort of cocker mix) in September of 2012, he'd been with the rescue site for 8 weeks and was found wandering the streets a week after the 4th of July. Last year was our first year having him over the holidays and we quickly learned that he doesn't like fireworks a AT ALL- and think that he must've run away during that time. Poor guy just shakes/pants and tries to hide. But each time a new one goes off, he'll pace and look for a new spot to hide. It's a bummer because we live on the central coast (California) just a few miles from a very popular beach site where you can camp on the sand- there's always a ton of the crazy campers that shoot off massive (illegal) fireworks starting in June and pretty much continuing through the whole summer. He's normally a very calm and low key dog that I feel badly seeing him so worked up. I think we're going to try some benedryl this year. Attachments:

My 10 year old Border Collie is afraid of fireworks, thunder, rain. The only thing I hate more than personal fireworks being blasted in my neighborhood are the freaking idiots who bring their dogs to the public fireworks. Far too often the dogs run off in terror, only to get lost, injured or run over.

My 14 year old Chesapeake gets super antsy. I am starting to medicate her with benadryl when we have a bad storm or fireworks are scheduled. This is kind of a new thing for her. As a gun dog, she has never really been too anxious about the gunshot but now that she's older she is pitiful!

The older Tucker gets, the worse he is effected by fireworks, thunder and other loud noises. I feel horrible for him, but with all his fur, in the middle of summer, a Thunder Shirt is just not an option...it's easier to close the windows, turn the TV on and wait it out with him

It's Rescue Remedy for my older dog who has become more fearful over the years. My new adoptee, Lacey, doesn't seem to be at all afraid of thunderstorms so I have hopes that the fireworks won't bother her. We go outside before dark for a potty break and keep them inside until we are sure it's over. I really try to avoid the "it's okay" thing now that I know that can actually cause fear. I made that mistake early on years ago, and if you've never had an 80-lb. lap/chest dog, count your blessings.

No, we'll just snuggle the high-strung one. He is OK as long as you make him feel secure. The other furry family member couldn't care less. You could set a bomb off by her head and she'd give you a "why are you bothering me?" glare before rolling back over to go to sleep. Not exactly attack-dog material.
