..... a stranger complimented you?
If I see someone wearing something that I really like I will usually tell them that they look great. There is a girl who works in one of the offices near me. One day I saw her and she’d had her hair dyed a different colour, and I told her that I loved her hair. She looked surprised and thanked me.
Another time recently at a wedding one of the female guests had on a great outfit, so I told her that I really loved her gorgeous outfit. She stared blankly at me and barely responded. I don’t know whether it was because she was surprised that a stranger complimented her, or she was just a stuck up cow haha! She was quite stunning so I’m sure she’s used to compliments.
Recently I bought a couple of new dresses. I was excited to wear them because they were quite flattering on my short kinda dumpy body, and managed to camouflage the worst of my flaws. I felt quite fabulous and confident wearing them. I was a bit put out that not one single person said I looked nice when I wore them, not even my own mum!
Then the other day I wore one of the new dresses to work. I was walking up to the shops at lunchtime and a woman waiting at the tram stop said “The dress looks great on you.” You know how people make the outline of a woman’s body with their hands, like the hourglass shape? Yeah, she did that. I replied “Oh, thank you so much!” and went on my merry way. I have to admit that I was on a high for the rest of the day. (Especially because it was another woman who complimented me.)
So, if you see someone with a nice dress or great hair or something like that – let them know! It could totally make their day.

I do it all the time and I do get some funny looks but I'm okay with that. For the most part you can tell it made them feel good and that's the goal. And I will say that being overweight and being treated as invisible or getting nasty looks and comments has really made me more apt to do this, especially with someone I feel may not get complimented often. I also make sure not to give insincere compliments.

I have a hard time filtering what is in my brain. But it does not bother me so much when compliments come out. We see the same people all the time, the lady that takes our prescription orders, the doctor that checks our health, the waitress at our favorite diner, and so on. So when I see something nice, pretty or striking, I usually compliment. But, here in this Texas small town, it is not unusual for strangers to compliment or even strike up conversations.

A couple of days ago I was at a store checkout, and the young woman (30-ish) in front of me had the most gorgeous braid - her hair was long and thick and had beautiful natural looking highlights. I think she appreciated the compliment. I know i would.

I live in the south. Talking to strangers is how we do. I haven’t gotten odd looks but people are pretty friendly around here so it isn’t uncommon like it was when we lived in the north.

Just today. I compliment people all the time. It's nice to see the smile it brings when I tell them I like their top, or perfume, or whatever. |

Sunday. I have blouse I got for events related to dd’s wedding, it Has interesting sleeves and is a beautiful color, we went to vote and one of the poll workers was asking me about it. It seems every time I wear it some one remarks on it.

I am a widow and live alone so I don’t get compliments often. I appreciate it so much when someone notices something unique about me. We all appreciate the recognition. |

I try to compliment women when I can. I wish I could do it more often but I often chicken out.
I got several compliments when I had my unicorn hair.

My DD, age 11, is just the best at this. It is amazing to watch people respond. She is filled with fear normally but when she wants to pay you a compliment, you are going to get a compliment. It is one of my favorite things about her. I always perk up when we are out and I hear her say, "Excuse me, Ma'am, I love your ____." Granted it is almost always your earrings, hair or baby but sometimes she'll throw in your shoes, or your dress. Sometimes, I struggle with this as I don't want her to focus on people's outsides, shape, etc, etc. but teaching kindness is also a good thing.

Yep, almost every day I can find something on someone to compliment. It makes me feel better to say it. I hope it brightens their day as much as it brightens mine when someone compliments me.

I also make sure not to give insincere compliments. Yes, I agree that it’s esoecially nice to receive a compliment as someone who is overweight. And I too do not give insincere compliments. I’m certain I’ve complimented someone in the last couple of days. I myself received a compliment 30 minutes ago from a HomeGoods employee. They liked my shirt. I think a simple compliment can really make someone’s day. A few weeks ago, my mom complimented a woman’s shirt. That woman was tickled pink! I watched her as we walked away, and she turned to her companion and said, “Did you hear that? That lady liked my shirt!” And a year or or so ago, mom and I had lunch at a small diner. We were on vacation, and had had consistently bad service at every restaurant we went. Slow service, unfriendly staff, etc. expensive or average tabs, it didn’t matter. So our server at this place was friendly, pleasant, quick, and best of all, I never waited for a drink refill. So as we paid her, I stopped her and said, “Hey, I just wanted to tell you, you were terrific today. We’re on vacation and have had consistently bad experiences. You were the best we had by far, thanks for the great service.” She too was flattered—you could tell. And it made my day to make hers. |

Now that I think of it, I don't compliment strangers near enough :/ I do however with friends and acquaintances. Hopefully that kind of makes up for it!
Rarely does a day go by without someone or multiple someone's complimenting my hair. It gets it's fair share of random comments as well....and people wanting to touch it.

LilyRose, I do that too, and often speak to a manager to let them know. At first I get worried looks from the front staff when I ask to speak with a manager, and the manager always seems surprised that I'm not complaining!

Last night at an event. This woman had on the quintessential NYC look dark lipstick with a weave all the way down her back. It's not for the feint of heart but when it's good it's fabulous so I told her.

I have many friends/family who don't compliment me even with big changes and it often hurts my feelings so I'd say that's just as important. These are the people that truly value your opinion. |

I was going to say that it's something I picked up by observing MY mom. She is always very present when dealing with people, and notices nice things and shares them. As a kid, I would (at least occasionally) actually notice how you could see someone's whole demeanor change when she'd say even the smallest thing - the smile was bigger, they stood a little taller. I try to do it, and always sincerely. Even commenting on someone's nail polish can pick them up! |

I went from shoulder length hair to pretty close to pixie cut and was having fun with adding purple and blue to it. I got a bunch of strangers telling me they liked my hair. I need to get some of my hair bleached out again to do it.
I try to remember to say something nice to a stranger at least once a week (I don't go out much).

What a wonderful thread! I try to always compliment strangers, more often a person who gave me good service but I also tell people I like their dress or such when it seems appropriate.

I compliment strangers often. It may be their skin, the color they are wearing, their smile or an act of kindness that I witnessed them doing. It is never forced as that would seem insincere. I just am just vocal with my compliments when the impulse pops into my brain.

I make an effort to do it every time I am out. I have told men that their cologne is fantastic, I've complimented women on their hair, their clothing, or even their smile. It feels really good to me to do this, and I've always made it a habit to look for someone who either looks like they need a boost, or someone who I just really like something about them enough to compliment.
I once saw a woman in the grocery store and as I was leaving, she came out behind me and was almost running to her car. She sat in the driver's seat just sobbing. I wanted so badly to go over and see if I could make her feel better, but I was afraid of intruding in her private moment. I didn't and I have always kind of regretted that.
