Hi guys!
If no one objects, I'm delighted to start a regular thread with this title. Starting today but then on the first of each month as well. Thanks to you, elaine, for this suggestion. You have a lot going on right now, so I'm thinking you wouldn't mind me being the one to start this thread in honor of our dear friend Virginia White. Please let me know if you'd like to do it though!
Soooo.... going from the wonderful suggestions on previous threads, here are the guidelines I hope we can follow:
Let's honor our fiercely brave, take no BS, witty, hilarious, passionate and politically active friend Compwalla and her fighting spirit in the following ways:
1. Sharing what we have done to make either our lives or society a better place. It could be political action, like writing a Congressperson or campaigning for your favorite candidate, or personal action, like getting your colonoscopy done, or starting therapy, or learning a new skill. Being vigilant about your health (Virginia was the one who caught her cancer after her doctors had dismissed her concerns several times...). Thanks elaine!
2. Sharing support and stories of persistence, endurance, and resolve as well, honoring her Nevertheless She Persisted motto. There’s no denying this describes Virginia.
People can post whatever it is they are doing to make the world (including themselves) better.
Yes, take care of your health!
Yes, participate in a cause you believe in!
Yes, call someone on their crap!
Yes, regale us with whatever crazy, funny, ridiculous thing you saw, or did.
Yes, don’t be afraid to post an opinion that can be controversial. This is a thread to honor Compwalla. It would be a disservice to her memory to shy away. Just tell it like it is and let the chips fall.
And yes, keep your sense of humor, and it will work. Remember when she posted about turning off FOX news in a restaurant, and the majority of comments were scolding her? She just cheerfully took it, and didn’t get bent out of shape, but never backed down either. Man, I loved that woman. Let’s all try to be like that.
Thanks lesserknownpea!
3. Remembering that Compwalla’s Call to Action doesn’t have to be “controversial”, although Virginia certainly wasn’t against controversy. It just means you are TAKING ACTION for something you believe in. Maybe that means you start actively campaigning for a Democratic senate candidate (Go Beto). Maybe that means you start campaigning for a Republican. Maybe it means you join a committee to build a new park in your town. Maybe it means you send a donation to the Red Cross or the American Cancer Society. Thanks katybee!
