So I'm just so unhappy with how im looking right now.
I swear, late 20s, early 30s were so easy. I was really slim, my skin was perfect, clothes just hung the way I wanted to.
These days, something has changed and the way I do my makeup just isn't suiting my face anymore. I think I'm starting to age in my face. The last 2 haircuts I've had havent been right either.
I need to update my clothes but don't know where to start. Mt husband tells me to dress 'younger' but to him that just means wearing tighter or more revealing clothes. To be honest, I have put on weight and just don't feel like wearing tight things right now! Plus I'm late 30s, a teacher, i need to be a bit appropriate!
I am in a total slump for what feels like ages now and I dont know where to start to get out of it! Any ideas would be greatfully received! I kmow there are more important things in life but i want to feel good about myself again.

Well, I would start at Sephora. Let them make you over. Buy what you like. Really, they are the best at what they do and can give you some tips on how to maximize your best features and hide the less flattering ones!

I'm really liking the Get Your Pretty On style challenges for clothes. The Spring one just started (first day of outfits is tomorrow). It helps me because she gives us a list of clothes to buy, not specific items, but a general list, and then styles an outfit for each day throughout the challenge. Get Your Pretty On

When I found myself in a similar situation I went to Pinterest and searched outfits. Eg Summer outfit mature woman etc or 30's woman outfits and it gave me a really good idea of what things worked together and I then tried to source similar items.
Makeup I went to a large makeup store and asked them to help me pick a foundation and other stuff. I was so nervous going in but it was fantastic and I bought a few items that have really made a difference to my look.

I agree, the easy place to start is walk yourself into Ulta, Sephora or somewhere like that. Let them help you with some new products! I was feeling like I needed a change make-up wise, walked into Ulta and told them I wanted to try some new things, they're more than happy to take over from there

GYPO mentioned above really helped me get out of a slump. Loved it so much I did 8 seasons in a row! Flying solo now, but if anything can get you out of rut, GYPO is it.

Agree with the above! Getting your makeup done is an easy place to start. Nordstrom is my favorite place for a free, no pressure consultation. I also got serious about a skin care routine recently, and feel like it was well worth the time and money that I didn't bother with in my 30's. Even without makeup, I feel much more confident in how I look. You could also book an appointment with a personal shopper for some outfit suggestions if searching out your own looks feels intimidating. A little self care goes a long way, so treat yourself

I feel like I let myself slip in the way I dress. A lot of it has to do with struggling to give a darn at work.
I think adding accessories makes a big difference. I have some nice jewelry pieces, but I also like to buy a few trendy costume jewelry pieces. That's where the $10 off $10 purchase coupons at JCP come in handy.
I also agree with checking out Pinterest.
You deserve to feel good about your appearance, so go for it!

Really, they are the best at what they do and can give you some tips on how to maximize your best features and hide the less flattering ones! That's exactly what I did. 2 or 3 months ago, I really noticed the aging and began feeling really, really old because of it. So I went to Sephora for a make-over. Twice, and I'm going again next Saturday. It really has helped and I do feel better about my aging face. Maybe find a new hair stylist. My step-sis is my hair stylist and always does my hair, so she and I had a nice long chat on Saturday. She gave me some great advice, cut my hair in a different style and I have high hopes for that. I love the style.

I'm not going to join a challenge until fall since my spring & summer wardrobe is pretty good, but I have been following this blog and buying some of the pieces recommended for building a wardrobe. I'm also a teacher and feel that her recommendations work well in our profession. I have been buying a lot of clothes from Loft lately. They have good sales often and I always feel like I'm dressed well when I wear pieces I bought there. SaveSave

I'm sorry you're feeling this way, losing confidence is very difficult to deal with. For your hair, do you have a stylist you like and trust her judgement? You could ask her what she'd do if given complete control. Google/Pinterest for hair styles for your face shape and bring them in with you. If you don't have someone you trust, the next time you see a woman whose hair cut/style makes you go "wow" ask her where she goes and who her specific stylist is.
eta: I think it's important as you change your clothing style that you find a look that you are comfortable in. I value my husband's opinion greatly, and for a special date night or something I might consider surprising him with clothes I'm not happy wearing just for him. But in general? Nah.

I totally get where you are coming from. A couple of months ago a pea (I think @keithurbanlovingpea) posted a question about an online fashion class. On a whim I checked it out and signed up. Am just finishing up the 8 week course, and am so glad I did. Totally changed my outlook and got me motivated again to improve my appearance. Focuses on dressing your body type, and not following current trends unless they work for you. Also focuses on dressing the body you have today, not the one you want to have. Very happy I did this, and will go on to take the second class. The class I took is adoreyourwardrobe.com. It wasn’t cheap but it was well worth it. The first outfit I put together following their guidelines had my husband tell me I looked 6” taller and 20lbs lighter......

I actually took the plunge and signed up for a subscription box for clothing. I ended up keeping 2 out of the 5 pieces and it was so nice to put something on, have it fit AND look nice. My DH was complaining about the price but I did some comparison's and it wasn't much different than what I would pay in a brick and mortar. I told my youngest DD that I finally felt pretty and I also looked thinner. Great feelings to have!

I'm in the same age bracket and sort of feel the same way. A lot of clothing trends right now don't suit my body at all, and while I don't really like to be "trendy", it's nice to feel current.
First, a good bra makes a huge difference! I will never go back to wearing mall-store bras again; I started shopping at stores that carry high quality bras and I get fitted every time. Even though they cost more than the chain stores, good bras not only last way longer than cheap ones, but they make your whole body look better and clothing fit better.
And I think the next thing is to start identifying outfits that you do like and what parts of your body you like to accentuate. After that, it's a bit easier to find clothing you like.
My last piece of advice is completely contrary to the previous one.... try on some things you think you won't like at all! Maybe just one thing at each store or time you go shopping. Sometimes it's surprising what does actually work, and then you've found something new to change up your wardrobe a bit.
Also, yes to everyone who suggests a make-over. I've found that investing in skincare products that suit my skin and actually work to be well worth the money. I do prefer to shop at Sephora because of their liberal return policy (have up to a year to return anything provided it doesn't look like you've used it quite a bit).

Thanks for all the suggestions!
Ok, first step, I'm going to go into sephora. I didn't even realist we had sephora here in Melbourne but there's one I can get to pretty easily.
I have to have a look at pinterest and start a style board. I love the idea of a personal stylist/shopper who can pick what looks good on me but i'll have to look into pricing.... might be a litrle expensive for me.
Edited: Just looked at get your pretty on! It's great!

She's great with colour but likes it when people bring in pics. She's never suggested anything to try. I was just discussing this with my sister, i need someone to say, for your hair type and face, try this! I uses to be happy with my hair bur my face has changed...

I have learned more in this course over the last 60 days than I have ever learned from any blog or fashion site or YouTube video. The confidence boost alone has been monumental, and I would gladly pay the course fee again just for that bit alone. But what I have learned about dressing for my body type, and finding the clothes that I truly love and look good in has been phenomenal. I felt super frumpy before the course and I learned it was all about the (wrong) clothes I was choosing, trying to be trendy rather than dressing the body I have. My previous wardrobe was too big, too casual and not me. I'll share one of my before photos with a couple of afters:

What is your best physical feature? When I gain a few pounds and try to dress to cover it, I try to show my best parts. Like, my boobs are good only when I’m heavier. So I wear tunic tops that cover my thighs but show off the assets. 😉 Longer, boot-cut slim jeans are better than ankle cut.

I need to do something about my wardrobe. I have almost no hair right now and don’t wear makeup anymore because I don’t have eyelashes or eyebrows.
I have lost 130 pounds and no longer need to go to plus size stores to shop. I need comfortable clothes that are a little more fitted. I got new pajamas this weekend and it was amazing to see myself in something that didn’t just hang on me.
Any suggestions for a former fat girl who doesn’t have a lot of energy for shopping?

I'm so glad you created this post! I'm in the same position you are and not feeling very good about my body, make up and hair. I'm in desperate need of new clothes but hate shopping so I keep putting it off. A few years ago, I did stichfix.com and loved the pieces I got. It helped me get out of my funk on what I was wearing. The only problem is it's expensive, even when I chose the cheapest option. I think I just need to put some money aside and go that route again. I just can't seem to drag myself shopping and I'm too hard to fit to order online.

As an aside, thanks @keithurbanlovingpea, your original post made a major difference for me. Your selfies look fabulous. You must have been in team pink, as I haven’t seen these before.

Another vote for Get Your Pretty On...I’m on my second season/challenge with them and my wardrobe has never been better. There are quite a few teachers participating, so lots of input and feedback from folks in that profession.
I’d like to do Adore Your Wardrobe...just not willing to spend that much (yet).
For make up, I agree with the Sephora recommendation. But, I’d also check out some YouTube channels...start with someone like MS Golden Girl, Hot and Flashy or Stephanie Marie. They have great classic but polished styles.

Does this course show you how to order clothes online also? Does it help you pick where online to order? I admit, I'm still in the dark ages when it comes to ordering online. I need someone to hold my hand and tell me where and how to shop.

The culture in my office is super casual, everyone wears jeans and t shirts. I felt like I was falling into a slump, too. I’m turning 30 this year but felt like the general public was treating me like a college student because my wardrobe reflected that. I went to Nordstrom and booked an appointment with a personal stylist and she helped me pick out some solid pieces that made me feel more grown up, but not stiff or too mature for my office. I would see if any department store offers a similar service and don’t feel pressured to buy everything they pull. I bought a few staple/classic pieces and went to more affordable stores for the trendier stuff.
I also second watching YouTube videos for make up and hair tips! I have a ton of make up but was always doing the same look, after watching a few videos I started experimenting with items I already owned and changed up a few things, it made me feel more confident.
