I'm moving into my new house which wound up being a 3 bedroom. I live alone and haven't had a guest stay overnight in the last ten years. Since there are two spare bedrooms I've put all of my home office stuff in one room and all my crafting/fun stuff in the second room. Now I'm getting all kinds of opinions from family and friends about how I should have a guest bedroom. I believe the exact wording I heard yesterday was "You're going to use ALL the rooms??? You're not going to have a spare room at all?"
So tell me, do you have a guest bedroom? Do you think it's weird to not have one?

You only need a guest bedroom if you want guests!
We have a spare room that's been used twice for guests in the last eight years, it serves more as a catch-all for the crap highly valuable and collectable stuff the husband brings home from work!

We don’t have a guest room. We have a three bedrooms too: One bedroom for us and we each have an office.

Our “guest room” has become the dumping room. There is a bed in there, but we haven’t had anyone stay in it recently (they slept on the big sofa in the family room, their choice). So, we just throw in there what we don’t want in the other rooms. That room is my big clean out project. One of these days.

I can’t imagine why you would need a guest room if you don’t have overnight guests. Why wouldn’t you use the space to suit your needs?
We have a guest room, but are a military family. So when family visits, it’s nice to have the space. Iwhen we had guests in years past, DD’s room was used the guest room and she had a double sized bed because of that. She would just sleep in her brother’s bunk bed when we had company.

I have a 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo, 1200sf. The second bedroom is my office/den/crafting space/where guests stay. I have a good quality air mattress for guests. I really only have 2 people who come from out of town to stay, so the mattress gets used about 10 days a year total. I've considered doing a wall bed in there, but really can't justify the cost for that few nights per year. If you haven't had an overnight guest in 10 years, I can't figure out why you'd have a dedicated guest bedroom. What a waste of space. Your house, YOU get to decide how to use the spaces

We have a guest bedroom, it gets used by my sister and Bil - they live away and come visit to see Mum.
It’s your home so you decide what to do with the rooms.

We have 3 bedrooms. The smallest is DH's office. The next larger one was DD's room. There is still a twin bed in there, but I haven't seen it in months because the room became the dumping ground after our last remodel. It's next on the list of decluttering/purging. I don't plan to do much with the room as we haven't had an overnight guest in over 10 years. Both our families are very small and none of them have ever had an interest in traveling to see us.

We do, and it's only a guest room. It doesn't double as another room or have anything else in it. I've set it up like a hotel room - the closet has extra pillows and blankets, an iron and a small ironing board, baskets with guest soap, lotion, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, hangers for clothes, and a white robe and a pair of slippers. It was fun to set up and we have guests several times throughout the year and they seem to enjoy staying in it.
We have four bedrooms and use two as bedrooms. The other room is our office.

Nope. I don't know many people who have a guest bedroom.

You didn't really have a response that fits me...I'm the "no I don't have one" group but I also don't feel like I "should". More like "I'd love to have a house big enough that I had a spare room, but the reality is that I don't". lol. If I had only one extra room I'd definitely turn it into an office/craft/whatever room.
eta: We hardly ever have guests anyway, so I feel no need for one. The last overnight guests we've had was the bunch of dd's friends who came for the gun control rally last month. Before that it was dd and friends who came up from school for the women's march. They all slept in sleeping bags all over the place, lol. The last "real" houseguest we had -- i.e., someone who couldn't just be offered a spot on the floor -- was dh's aunt from Denmark. Dd was much younger then so we just put the aunt in dd's room and dd slept in a sleeping bag in with me and dh.

We hae a 2-bedroom apartment. The room DH and I don't sleep in is an everything room. It has our laundry drying rack, our ironing board, all my craft materials and a desk for me and also a pull out sofa. When we have guests, they sleep in there, but that is about once every year or so - the room gets used more often for its other purposes.

I put that I don't but I should. We have a shared office (that SHOULD be the guest room but we use it as an office) that is our 4th bedroom. Each kid has their own room. The girl (6) has a full size loft bed (5'6" off the ground) that we put a queen size blow up under. The boy (2) has a crib that he sleeps in and a queen size mattress/boxspring on the ground. When company comes, we put his crib in the office and make up the queen. Ultimately, both kids will have lofts with the ability to put queen blow ups under and we can put the kids all in one room and adults in the other.

I have a guest bedroom/office. Not really an option for that in your poll.

my response doesn't really fit either. We have a guest bedroom but we never have guests. We sometimes use it if one of us isn't feeling well or is having a bad night sleep, to not disturb the other. The closet is also used for my clothes and some storage. So yes, it is used, but not by guests. I can't imagine why anyone besides the people who live in my house would have input into how I arrange it.

Why would you waste the space on a guest room? I love that you are using the rooms for your own.
We have 2 guest rooms. Our son and his family use them twice yearly. My mom and dad use them about 4 times per year. Random people stay occasionally.
DH actually uses one for his naps! He says it's darker and more quiet in there during the day, than our bedroom.

I’ve ever lived in a space big enough for a guest bedroom. I say it’s your house so you choose how to use the rooms! Our current home has two bedrooms. One was supposed to be an office/craft room...I had it all planned out and ordered the desks for it. Then my dd and dgd needed to relocate so now it’s their room. When they move out I will have a room for me. Dh has his desk and computer in our bedroom so that room will be all mine!!

I have 2 guest bedrooms (live alone in 3 bedroom house plus study ). The guest rooms don’t get used that often but I do have a few people to stay each year.
Don’t have a guest room if you don’t want one!

I used to have a 3 bedroom house with an office. I had my master bedroom and used the office. I made one room a guest room and put a little couch in the other to make a reading nook. Guess what—I never went in the guest room or “reading nook”, and you guessed it—they ended up becoming dump holes.
I am much happier now in a 2 bedroom townhouse, I have my bedroom and office, which I use daily. Ironically now, I do need a guest room, because I have a brother who moved out of state who visits frequently for weeks at a time. But he uses my aero bed in the office and is quite happy.

We have a room we can use for guests but it isn’t a dedicated guest room. It’s an office and home gym 99% of the time.

I do. I'm family central -- I have houseguests all the time. I'd say every few weeks someone stays here. Every few months I have more people than beds -- good thing I also have four couches.
I'm also the house for holidays. Our families are spread out and they all come to visit multiple times per year.

We bought a 4 bedroom and are a family of 4 (one son and one daughter). So, for sleeping, we would of course need 3 bedrooms. However, converting our 4th from the way it was originally set up 10 years ago as a guest room to an office and craft storage room you would think I was committing murder!!! My husband's family is disgusted with our excessive use of space so to speak. Different strokes for different folks. Unfortunately, while I prefer to do what I want to do with the room, it comes with guilt that I can't let go of.

I would like to have one, for the one or two times a year my sister comes to visit. I think it would be just a little bit nicer for her to have her own space, and then she could go to bed early if she wants. And preferably, that would come with her own bathroom so she can stay out of mine. LOL. It's part of my "someday, when I win the lottery and buy a house" plan. But my father also claims he's going to move in with me for his twilight years, so maybe it's better that I not.

SweetieBugs Your DH's family should MYOB. As for your guilt, calculate how much that room costs you every month as a percentage of your mortgage. Now calculate how much you use it as you wish, vs. how often it was used as a guest room. I bet it's much more cost effective to USE the room.

We have three bedrooms and only one bath. In both houses. When my son moved back to the other house, his room will be my crap room. The other room is daughter's room. If he wants to set up a guest room in the other house, he can but I doubt he will. He paints miniatures, and needs a room for that. And I think he will be getting a room mate.
The other reason for no guest room, we are not overnight guest people. We sleep until 7 and like to mosey around. I don't like to get up at 5 to make breakfast.

I have a scrapbook room that doubles as a guest room when someone stays. We have a big high air mattress for the adults, and then we put the kids on the floor with cushions in my husband's man den. We used to use our camper for "our" room when we had guests and had the guests stay in the master bedroom, but we recently sold the camper--so we're working with plan B now! Yes, we get lots of guests. Our grandkids stay frequently, and we have kids that come with their families from out of state a couple of times a year.

I voted no, but I feel like I should. We moved last fall. In our old house we didn't have a basement and the house was very small so we used the third bedroom for storage. Our current house is much bigger and has a basement so we didn't need the third bedroom for storage. So I thought we'd have a guest bedroom that would rarely get used (all close family lives nearby). But we allowed dd to get two guinea pigs and apparently they need more space than a traditional cage. So they have a pen like thing on the floor of the third bedroom. DD is spoiled and so are her guinea pigs! ETA we plan on finishing part of our basement in the next year or two and adding a bedroom and bath so then we will have a guest bedroom just in case. It will probably be used mostly in cases of either dh or I being sick or snoring and the other wanting to sleep in peace! Dh has been sick with a cold and slept on the couch for several days. He said it wasn't very comfy!

We have a five bedroom house for a family of three. So one bedroom is a dedicated guest room, one has become my daughter’s office, and one is kind of a storage room at the moment. I love having a guest room even though it doesn’t get used all that often. It’s nice to be able to keep it “guest ready” and just shut the door until we need it. It would feel odd to me if we didn’t have it.

We don’t have a guest room but I wish we did but we live in a one bedroom apt and it would come in handy sometimes.
