The biggest political story no one is talking aboutBy Chris Cillizza, CNN Editor-at-large Updated 5:56 PM ET, Thu May 17, 2018 (CNN)On Wednesday, two more Republicans signed on to a petition that would force an open-ended and unpredictable immigration debate onto the House floor -- a nightmare scenario that the White House and GOP leaders seem, at least at the moment, unable to stop. The decisions by Republican Reps. John Katko of New York and Dave Trott of Michigan to sign on to the petition came in the wake of private urgings from House Speaker Paul Ryan to his GOP colleagues not to add their names to the list. The duo's act of defiance brought the number of Republicans signed onto the effort to 20, just five short of the number they need to force votes on four competing measures aimed at preserving the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. (That math -- 25 Republicans -- is dependent on all 193 Democrats supporting the effort.) At the heart of the debate is the long-standing division within the GOP conference over what to do on immigration reform -- and the popular DACA program in particular -- amid swirling political winds. Congress could be just five Republican signatures away from voting on DACA On one end of the debate stand Trump, Ryan and the rest of the House Republican leaders who view a wide-open floor debate -- and a series of roll-call votes -- as a potentially disastrous visual for the party and one without any likely positive result. Ryan called such efforts "futile" on Thursday. MOre at link: www.cnn.com/2018/05/17/politics/daca-house-immigration/index.htmlThis could get interesting and hostile! dt wont like it either!

hmmm, that's weird. I watch lots of MSNBC, and I've never heard any of their people be dismissive of the brutality and violence of MS-13. I must be watching at the wrong hours or something. Because it never happened. Liberals (and even some conservatives) certainly do make the point that many undocumented immigrants are coming here to work those jobs no American wants. But we're not the ones conflating MS-13 with ALL undocumented immigrants.
Trump's and the GOP's history of words about undocumented immigrants is sufficient context to assume the worst about any comment he makes. It's unfortunately a long, well-documented history of nasty comments, insinuations and actions against the undocumented. Anybody who says "well, what he really meant" or "you're taking that out of context" when Trump starts talking about Hispanic immigrants has to completely ignore this history. It most certainly did happen: Joy Reid of MSNBC said on her show: “He gives a speech tonight, in which he makes it sound like the biggest issue in the United States, the biggest threat is MS-13, a gang nobody that doesn't watch Fox News has ever heard of. So he makes it sound like they're the biggest threat.” Then she tweeted: Joy Reid✔ @joyannreid MS-13 (which most Americans who don't mainline Fox News likely have never heard of) has been mentioned tonight more than Russia. Actually, has Russia been mentioned at all? #SOTU 8:55 PM - Jan 30, 2018 8,439 3,623 people are talking about this Actually yes you are. Given the "animal" comment being conflated with ALL, yes you are. Just like damn near everything he says. "You" are "the ones" doing that and then can't understand those that aren't doing that might be hearing/seeing the actual words he's saying and the CONTEXT in which they were said and therefore support some of what he's doing and saying.

Merge, you are still correct! In the context of his response yesterday, his history of speaking about immigrants, you are absolutely correct. It took until today for team trump to have to come out and backtrack on what he said vs what he supposedly meant, which he’s done time and time again. Me thinks someone ^^^is just “so full of shit that (they) must be gagging on it” by now, with all the gymnastics they have to do in defending trump. They really must like the taste of shit....he dishes it out like ice cream and cake at a kids birthday party.

CNN✔ @cnn
As reported in the article above, Trump’s remarks late Wednesday were in response to comments about members of MS-13 and other undocumented immigrants who are deported for committing crimes.
11:42 AM - May 17, 2018 157 308 people are talking about this
The Associated Press✔ @ap
AP has deleted a tweet from late Wednesday on Trump’s “animals” comment about immigrants because it wasn’t made clear that he was speaking after a comment about gang members.
9:35 AM - May 17, 2018 11.4K 10.2K people are talking about this
Even listening to the conversation shows, without a doubt, that he was referring to MS-13.

Yawn....
I know you were trying for that big “gotcha” but you just confirmed what I’ve posted—it wasn’t until today (the 17th) that his comments are being backtracked and (re)explained, because by most accounts—NO ONE was clear as to who he was referring to (on the 16th) and he certainly didn’t clarify. And given his history with immigrant talk, the entire world knows how he truly feels.
And merge is still correct with what she was making a point of—we’re not the ones who conflate MS-13 & immigrants. To trump, (Hispanic) immigrants are MS-13–he brings that point up when in talks about immigration, the wall, DACA...
Not to forget that trump administration has not ever focused on (enabling ICE) of ridding the US of MS-13, trumps administration has by far arrested and/or deported vastly more non-violent immigrants. So he too, is full of shit on what he says.

This from The Beat with Ari...
“New: Trump says the Libya “model would take place if we don’t make a deal” with North Korea but if a deal is made “Kim Jong Un is going to be very, very happy”:
Prompted this response from Paul Waldman...
“1. Trump has no idea what Bolton was talking about when he brought up Libya, let alone what Bolton was actually up to.
2. Bolton is positively gleeful that Trump is so clueless, because it means he'll be easy to manipulate.”

John Pavlovitz hits the nail on the head...
“Trump didn't need to call ALL immigrants 'animals', but he WILL use that incendiary image to paint them all as potential gang members while pushing immigration tactics/legislation—the same way he invokes images of "terrorists" when speaking about Muslims and travel bans.
This is what he does.
He brokers in irrational fear and leverages it. He uses stereotypes to justify his mistreatment of entire people groups.
Brown skinned people can now all be MS-13 members... or family members of them... or friends of them... or associated with them... or traced to gang activity.
Bigotry wielded in this way creates contempt and makes it seem reasonable.
This is who he is.”

What was that you were saying Merge "But we're not the ones conflating MS-13 with ALL undocumented immigrants." Yes, we are not—but trump sure has, is, and continues to do so. Pavlovitzs’ message confirms exactly what I was saying and backs up what merge stated. Are you really that dense? (rhetoricical, already know the answer) Another attempt at a “gotcha” = epic fail.

The sad thing is either you can’t or won’t see that . No Joy Reid is NOT right, she said: "a gang nobody that doesn't watch Fox News has ever heard of." Sorry, no. The facts make that dead wrong. And the claim from Merge was that "we" aren't the one conflating MS-13 with ALL. Clearly her claim is wrong, it's proven repeatedly that your "we" actually ARE the ones conflating the two.

What facts? I never heard of the M-13 gangs and I don’t watch Fox News. And there are all kind of gangs in San Francisco, Oakland, Richmond, even in my little neck of the woods north of SF. And while I have heard about “gang activity” and “gang related deaths” for years, no one has singled out the gangs as M-13 gangs. Just exactly how is @merge claim wrong? If it’s “proven repeatedly” I would think it would be really easy for you to provide specifics.

So, you DO actually HEAR him say something about MS-13, but YOU have decided he means something other than the actual words he's saying. And we're suppose to just go along with your made up version of the meaning his words? Do you really not get how absurd that is? Really? Do you really not see it's a "problem" of your own making?

If it’s “proven repeatedly” I would think it would be really easy for you to provide specifics. These facts: "A search of “MS-13” on CNN’s website reveals dozens of articles that mention the gang. The gang has been mentioned in an assortment of New York Times headlines in recent memory, such as a June 2017 article titled, “39 members of MS-13 are arrested, authorities say,” and a July 2017 article headlined, “Trump will visit Long Island in the wake of MS-13 gang arrests.” If the Times is too high-brow for the MSNBC star, USA Today has also covered the gang extensively. A video on the site from Nov. 2017 is headlined, “MS-13 gang member arrested in Maryland murder.” USA Today even covered the gang back in 2012 when the Obama-era feds decided to label MS-13 a criminal group. “MS-13 is an example of some of the worst of criminal gang behavior,” Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., told Matthews on the very same show on which Reid appeared. News organizations, including the Washington Post, HuffPost, The New Yorker, The Hill, New York Post, PBS, New York Daily News, Los Angeles Times, Daily Mail, Time and Slate have all covered the dangerous gang." link
So, no Joy Reid is NOT right when she said: "a gang nobody that doesn't watch Fox News has ever heard of." Sorry, no. The facts make that dead wrong and by making that statement, and despite Merge's claim that "it never happened", the facts show otherwise. Someone from MSNBC did in fact make MS-13 out to be no big deal - nothing more than a figment of "Fox watcher's" making.

No president should refer to any human as an "animal" unless they are speaking scientifically at a biology conference - in which case all humans are animals. To refer to only some humans as "animals" is beneath contempt - even for Trump and his sub-basement low-bar.
