I need to preface this by saying that I haven't lived in a place with carpet for decades, so I'm out of practice. My dear darling cat knocked over a partially filled glass of Diet Coke, which I didn't discover until it was dry. I had the (expensive Berber) carpet installed less than 2 months ago, and the stain is approximately 1' x 1' right at the top of the stairs. I could cry.
I tried blotting and cleaning it per instructions I found online (dishsoap and water, vinegar and water), no luck. Yesterday I rented a Rug Doctor and thought I had it after going over the area numerous times. Woke up this morning and nope, the stain is still there. I'm going to go over it one last time before returning the Rug Doctor this morning but I'm not holding out much hope.
I'm open to any and all remedies y'all could recommend. Or am I better at this point calling the professionals to clean it? Help....please.

Do you have any Nature’s Miracle on hand? That stuff usually works pretty good.

Oxiclean should fix it right up.

Spot shot. I spilt black water base pain all over my carpet and spot shot got it out. Jen

Like Z*G says Oxiclean might do it. If that doesn't work I would also try some 20 or 40 volume peroxide straight out of the bottle. Try that on a tiny spot before using it all over. If you have a wet dry vac you can pour water and then suck it up over and over after you get the stain out to get any residue out of the carpet. Residue usually collects dirt in that same spot.
Good luck. That is so disappointing to have something new get ruined.

I don’t know if it works on Diet Coke but I’ve removed old, set-in red wine stains with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and Dawn dish soap.

Also, remember that the carpeting is like a wick and it sucks up the liquid. When you cleaned it, you probably got out the top part of the stain and with it being damp, over night the coke that seeped way down deep in the carpet "wicked" up and now it looks like it returned. I'd clean it a few more times and see what happens. When cleaning the area, always put heavy pressure on the wet/damp area with a terry cloth type fabric to help soak or entice the upward wicking.

My sister had a leak in her fireplace that stained the carpet around the hearth. Since she is planning on listing her house, she worked on that spot forever. She did everything you mentioned (she owns a carpet cleaner) over and over until it finally came up enough that it isn’t noticeable unless you knew it had been there (her carpet is tan, not white). But she did this over the course of a couple of months. It just took time.

Oxiclean should fix it right up. When my son was little, he spilled an entire container of purple egg dye on our carpet. Thought my husband would go postal. I got out the Oxiclean and doused the area. It changed back to light beige as I poured it on the carpet. It was a (chemistry) miracle.

It was the only thing that got a Mountain Dew stain out of our berber carpet. DEFINITELY test in a hidden area first.

Thanks so far girls. I went over twice more and just got back from returning the Rug Doctor. I should know in the morning how it looks, but I'd be willing to bet it's still there, so I'm sure I'll be trying some of your ideas. Dumb dumb question...is peroxide, the same as hydrogen peroxide? I see them both referenced. Also, I've never purchased Oxyclean. Is there a particular kind I'm looking for, or is it just called Oxyclean? Thanks again.

I second Spot Shot. Just make sure you don’t have on finger nail polish or wear gloves because it will remove it too. Thru the years I have removed some nasty stains with the stuff. Just make sure you rinse well.
Good Luck with whatever you try!

Oxiclean is sold in a white tub. I don't know if there are different kinds. My guess is that Rug doctor got out all of the sugary bits and now you just need the color to return. Oxiclean is safe on colors (I use it in the washing machine).

Oxiclean is a brand but you can find other brands. It's a peroxide-based cleaner, but it's granules you mix with water. I use it for any smelly laundry but it's also miraculous on stains in carpet like the one you described. When people mention peroxide they are talking about hydrogen peroxide, yes. Also if you have a dollar tree nearby you can get a small container for a dollar if you don't want to buy a big container at the store.

Honestly? At this point I'd call the pros. For less than $100, they will get it out. And sometimes when you use other products on a stain, it sets the stain.
If you are determined to do it yourself, my vote is for Oxyclean. That stuff is magic. Just make sure your rinse it out of the carpet really, really well. I've had it eat through clothing before when I've left it to sit on a stubborn stain. (Brand new Gymboree top with a big hole in the middle of the tummy!)

I’ve had great luck with Spot Shot, too. Between it and OxiClean, I think you’ll be able to lift it.

I've had very good luck using Folex. I spritz it on heavily, brush it in, let it set a few minutes and use an old terry cloth to scrub on the stain. It may take a couple of cleanings this way but I've used it on every stain you can think of including heavy oil and have always been successful with it.

peroxide? (test on a small part in an out of the way area?) i bet it does the trick I always use peroxide and blot- never takes out any color and I have tan carpet. I always let it sit a few minutes. You may have to repeat a few times.

Also, I've never purchased Oxyclean. Oxyclean should come with a house. It's good for cleaning so many things and takes all kinds of stains out of fabrics. I have never tried it on carpet. For carpet my mother swears by Folex. You can get it at Bed Bath and Beyond among other places. After my dad passed away, she was planning to have the den carpet changed. She had used Folex many times for all kinds of stains including blood, soft drinks, food and other things that accompany an aging man in poor health. In the weeks that followed, she just kept working on that carpet every now and then with Folex and we are not going to replace it. It's many years old so I can't say it is good as new but it looks vastly better than before. I can't believe some of the stains she has been able to get out. I bought some and was successful with several stains I thought were permanent on my dining room rug.

There's so much help on this thread, thank you. The jury is still out on whether this morning's cleaning with the Rug Doctor helped...I went over that area so many times over the last 24 hours that it's still damp. If it's not out then I'm going to try Oxiclean. If that doesn't work I'm going to call the pros. WTH was I thinking getting off white carpet? Seriously.

I have removed a pop stain from our off white carpet. In a bowl mix Dawn dish soap, peroxide and water. Scrub that on a stain with a toothbrush. This is where is starts to sound crazy but it worked. Put a flour sack towel over the area and then iron over the flour sack towel on the steam setting. I didn’t believe it would work when I read it but we had tried everything so I gave it a shot.

You have to put a clean towel over the spot with something heavy like several hardcover books on top to help wick moisture away from the carpet. Otherwise, you will likely wake up to another water stain tomorrow.
