I looked and didn’t see anything, so I apologize if this is a repeat. This is my synopsis, and the link to the story, containing the girlfriend’s name, follows. A young musical talent who had been playing the clarinet since he was 7 and had won numerous awards over the years. His dream was to attend the prestigious Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles, where he would study under the famed clarinet teacher Yehuda Gilad. The teacher only accepts 2 students a year, and this guy was chosen as one of them with a full scholarship. His girlfriend, also a musician, didn’t want him to go because she was either jealous of his talent or was afraid it would spell the end of their relationship so she sabatoged him. She found the acceptance letter in his email before he saw it and she replied that he was no longer interested. Then she made up a phony email address for the teacher and sent him a rejection letter! She also sent a rejection letter for another school he was accepted to. It is a horrible story where this guy’s dreams were ruined. He found out by chance years later when he went to take a class from this master and the teacher asked him why he turned down the opportunity a few years prior. He was confused because he received a rejection letter, which he forwarded to Yehuda Gilda showing the phony email address. After much research, he learned it was this girlfriend, who he had broken up with a few months after she pulled this on him for completely unrelated reasons. The judge in Canada awarded him $350,000 Canadian money as compensation. That covered the years of tuition that the scholarship covered and he added an additional $50,000 because he was so disgusted with the girlfriend for doing this to him. The girlfriend never showed up in court so he won the default judgment. She hasn’t been located yet, so hopefully she is found and made to start paying this money back. Regardless, I imagine she will likely have zero chances for a career in music now that everyone knows what she did. As well as difficulty in dating anyone who knows what she did. Who could trust her now? I just hope she is found quickly. I also wonder if Canadian law would allow for her to be jailed for such an offense? She committed fraud via the internet, right? Fortunately this guy was so talented that he still was given a prestigious appointment with a symphony on Toronto. And he has a new girlfriend. I have heard of many stupid thing that women do for love, but this reaches a new low. Can you imagine? www.npr.org/2018/06/15/620202403/musician-wins-260-000-in-lawsuit-against-ex-girlfriend-who-sabotaged-career

It is beyond sad. Who knows what his career would have been had he been able to attend that program? I am trying to picture what could possibly be going through her mind right now. She knows that she has been outed and she must know about the judgment by now. Her name and face has been in many articles, so she can’t really hide. Especially if she is making a living with her own musical ability.
I’m sure an acquaintance or family member will be reporting her whereabouts here soon. She lives in Canada, but I suppose she could attempt to leave the country to live elsewhere if she had family in another country. I am impressed by how well Eric is taking this. I saw an interview with him and he doesn’t seem vengeful at all. And he is happy with his current career opportunity and girlfriend, so that helps.
You know, in light of all the suicides that have been happening, I hope this woman doesn’t feel that would be an last resort option for her. She should come forward, accept responsibility and begin paying restitution.

If he was my kid, I'd made damn sure that girl made restitution.
(Also god forbid if one my daughters did something like that - I would make sure they made restitution. That is so messed up.)

That is one of the most shitty, underhanded things I have ever read! I hope her wages get garnished and she has to pay back every dime of that judgement. She very well may have changed the course of his entire life.

She stole a turning point from him. No amount of money will ever make up for that. Arghhh, I detest women like this.

We were just talking about this the other night. Dd has a good friend who is an amazing clarinet talent. He'll be majoring in music when they go to school this Fall. We read an article and she forwarded it to him. Seriously, who does this? It was quite an elaborate ruse by a very diabolical person.

I saw this -- my son is a clarinet performance major. OMG I just can't believe someone could do that to someone they allegedly loved.

I heard that on the radio the other day and was flabbergasted. That is such a horrific level of low. Can you imagine if they hadn't broken up and were still together?

This is a perfect example of why, children, teens and young adults should be taught to never share their passwords with anyone(except Parents, for those who are minors - under 18). Nor should you leave your devices laying around "open".
Password protect everything, and do not give the password to anyone. Except one's spouse/significant other, if you so choose.

Absolutely appalling that someone would do such a thing, I imagine her insecurities must have been immense, but the lack of empathy is beyond comprehension. And no amount of compensation could adequately make up for his lost opportunities. Tragic.

I keep looking to see if this woman has been located yet. No sightings of her yet, but this morning I read another article that said after he discovered fake email led back to his ex girlfriend, he contacted her and she denied doing it and then blocked him on her social media. There is a paper trail that proves she did do it, obviously, since the court awarded him compensation for the lost opportunity, and that would not have happened if he didn’t have documented proof.
I don’t know why this bothers me as much as it does, but I want her to accept responsibility and start paying him the awarded sum, even if it takes her 30 years to do so. Surely she has people around her that know about this and could point the authorities to her. Although, since this is a civil claim and there is no jail time involved, all they could do would be to let the courts or Eric know her whereabouts and place of employment so he could seek a garnishment of her wages.

I can imagine. I know someone who got into an Ivy League school, but his parents didn't want to pay, so they never told him he got in and he went to a service academy for free. Only afterwards did they tell him. And he forgave them. Stranger than fiction.

This story really bums me out. I wonder if after she did it and prior to her being found out, if she ever had an regret in doing so. I would hope so, but you just don't know how people think.
I am happy that at least now he is getting to study under his mentor.

We were just talking about this at work one of the lawyers has a son attending McGill for music. She was joking about telling her ds to stay away from girls.
Seriously though I just can't imagine the disappointment of knowing you missed such a great opportunity through no fault of your own.

Only afterwards did they tell him. And he forgave them. Stranger than fiction. That is just crazy. Reasonable parents would let him know he got into the school and explain that they could not afford to send him there. Even if they had the money, he might have been someone who would have on his own chosen to attend the service academy. He might have been a little more resentful about it had he not had an an outstanding alternate plan.
