Never.
1. I’m not even sure it has a lock. I’ll have to look when I leave for work. 2. If it does indeed have a lock, we definitely do NOT have a key. Lol
Actually we don’t have keys for any of our doors. DS has one for the front door so if the power is out and we can’t open the garage, we could conceivably get a key with minor hassle.

I voted Other. It's definitely locked at night and when we leave the house. If we're home there's about a 50/50 chance that it's unlocked.

Only to keep the youngest *IN* since she can open the door. Otherwise nope, on account of my DH. I would prefer it to be locked when we leave but he throws a shit fit when I do and he has to waste time to unlock it. We compromised by getting a monitored security system to set when we leave. Doesn't happen that often as there is usually someone home anyway (SAHM/DH works from home). He is open to a keypad deadbolt but we just haven't gone to look at them yet.

We no longer have an attached garage. However, our previous house did. Even though we were kinda rural and on a dead end street, I kept all of the exterior doors locked all the time simply because I probably wouldn't hear someone busting it. The interior door was locked any time I did not have my hearing aid in, when we were gone, and at night.
There has been a rash of break-ins in a neighborhood where 95% of the houses have attached garages. They're kicking in the exterior door and then just entering through the garage. Most of the houses reported their interior doors were not locked. This same neighborhood is having their cars broken into. In some cases, the cars aren't even locked and purses were left in them. WTF? We are a city with crime, not hole in the wall Tony town with no traffic lights! Lock your damn cars. My parents who live no where near this neighborhood have turned paranoid and have started locking their interior door in the garage all of the time instead of just when they go out of town. My sister is extremely paranoid and has closet rods in her windows, multiple locks on her doors, and has talked about buying those door stops that schools have to stop shooters in the classrooms.

So we did for awhile, AND then I had a dumb blonde moment.
I was in the garage, garage doors closed and and tried to go through the house door, which I don't have a key for.
OMG it was locked
I am now trapped in the garage.
Panicking I call my husband. I am near hysterics. I AM TRAPPED IN THE GARAGE. As he answers the phone I turn around and stare at the HUGE black button on the wall.
I start laughing my ass off.
How trapped in a garage can you be when you can hit the garage door opener button?

Other: I live in an apartment. No underground garage in our building either. I always lock the door to the attached garage at my mother's. Never ever leave it unlocked except when I'm hauling groceries into the house. I'm far more meticulous about locking everything in that house and closing the entrance gate as soon as possible when I housesit than her or my stepdad. I often trim the bushes in the garden and clear any heaps of branches out to reduce hiding space for burglars when I get there. Can you tell I've never lived in a detached house on my own? Me to the kitties: "We're on lockdown!" Garage doors and unlocked entrances/open windows are the #1 preventable cause for burglaries (about 40% of break-ins happen without the use of force). You're literally creating opportunity by not locking (and garage doors are easily broken into).

Always. We have a keypad lock on it so you don't have to be carrying a key and it's fast and easy for us to unlock it.
We added this when we realized that anyone could walk in the house totally unnoticed - my husband could be in the backyard doing yard work for a long period of time, and when he's doing that, the garage door is up. If I leave to run errands, or I'm not home, it's obvious there is only one car in the garage. Someone could be in and out of the house without him ever knowing they were there.
Sure, someone could steal something from the garage, but this way they can't so easily get in the house. His car locks automatically, so is always locked. I don't ever leave my purse or keys in the car.

I asked because we only lock ours at night and when out of town and I was surprised (well kind of) to learn that my sister locks hers all the time.
I didn't realize it was that easy to break into garage doors. We do lock ours at night and when out of town. That said our neighborhood is super safe and quiet so we'll keep doing what we are doing. I might change except while our neighborhood is mostly couples with children/teens, we are surrounded by senior citizens who are home all day but also active and going in and out. And the couple across the street, while really sweet, are also super nosy. I don't think much could happen in the neighborhood without them noticing!
ETA Dh is also insistent that unless we are coming or going or in the front yard/driveway/garage that the overhead garage door be down. We never leave it up for long we are pretty much in it/the driveway.

we don't have a garage.
We keep the back door locked unless someone is in the backyard because it has a tendency to not quite latch and fly open releasing indoor kitties into the yard. I only lock the front door at night or if we're leaving.

We lock all outside doors, including the garage, as we come in them. Well, except that I don't always keep the door into the garage from the backyard locked. It sticks, so it won't seem unlocked if someone tries it, and sometimes I want to get in the garage without going all the way around.

Yes, it is locked all the time. People can easily code an opener to your garage system.
When we are gone and at night, the garage system itself is locked.
The door into the garage has a deadbolt too.
We live in a safe are. But its nice to have the protection.

Rarely does that door get locked. I have an alarm to the big garage door, and I never leave my garage door open for longer than a minute or two. Plus, anyone who comes in the house would have to get past my german shepherd.

Always. It's too easy to open garage doors. Although at my present house my garage isn't attached to the house but in my previous house it was.The lock on the garage door was nowhere near as good as any locks on the doors to the house. I always lock the garage door in this house too even though it isn't attached to the house.

We don’t. My husband says that if someone gets into the garage they would have all the time in the world to bust open the interior door. He said he would rather they just walked through it. We used to leave the garage door open most of the day but have gotten into the habit of shutting it when we come in.

Sometimes you can be too secure in the event of fire. Had I an attached garage the door would be locked.

I voted other since we have a detached garage. In the past when we have had an attached garage, then the door to the garage was always locked. We have 4 exterior doors on our house and they are all locked no matter the time of day. My parents used to live in a very small town and never locked their doors during the night. I was forever locking my dad out of the house due to habit when I would visit them!

We have a detached garage, but my parents both have attached garages. My Mom & stepdad only lock that door at night. My Dad and stepmom never lock that door (not sure if it's even lockable), but they also very rarely lock the main doors.

She's more afraid of someone breaking in than of a fire.

I always keep all of my doors locked. I know it won't keep out someone who really wants in, but I want them to have to work for it if they decide to.
Also, sometimes even the smallest things are a deterrent to thieves. If locking my door is one of them, then yay for me.
I also lock my car in my garage.

We never lock the door between garage and house, heck half the time we don't even lock our front door. I am forever opening the garage door to throw recycling into the bins we have out there it would annoy me if it was locked.

We do not have an attached garage, but growing up, one of our houses did. And like every house on the block, the garage was actually in the basement of the house. Every house was built with a door between the garage and the rest of the basement that did not have a lock, BUT, there was a locking door at the top of the basement stairs. So apparently the builders only thought you'd want to protect the people and belongings on the first floor of the house. One of our neighbors had a separate apartment in their basement, and they had locking doors at the top and bottom of their basement stairs, but otherwise I don't recall anyone else adding a lock to that interior garage door. A few people added screen doors, but I don't recall locks. And I spent a lot of time in those other houses.

It is sadly ridiculously easy for someone to get into our house, regardless of whether or not I leave the garage door open. Seriously, it's easy to break any window and then open the door, right?
I have two big dogs. Okay, they're teddy bears, but if they hear a noise they'll alert me and scare away anyone who doesn't know them. They have BIG barks. I do count on them, but I'll be a little more careful come fall when my son leaves for college.

We do at night and when we go out of town. The exterior garage door, although metal, is attached by just a regular wooden door jam that would be easy to break. And rolling doors for the car can be lifted.
We have a keypad for the rolling doors and a keypad for the garage to house door, so no lockouts. And all exterior doors are keyed the same.

We always lock it at night and when we went away this weekend we did. But then we got home and realized none of us had the garage key with us. So yeah....that was fun.
