I have a question about dogs and habits of their owners. Is it common practice to not pick up he dog poop from the yard, and instead just mow over it while cutting the grass? My neighbor was out mowing his yard today while we were walking laps around the neighborhood. Every time we passed his house (and then sitting in our driveway afterwards) we got hit with an unpleasant wall of doggie doo. I noticed this last week as I was walking where a few houses down the guy was mowing his lawn and it also smelled strongly of dog doo. Neither of these families have young children anymore, so I imagine here is no urgency in picking up after their pets as no one is playing in the grass.
When we had our dog growing up my dad always picked up the dog poop before mowing. I remember being a friends houses who had dogs, and their yards never smelled of dog poop while their dad’s cut the grass. It has never occurred to me that people will just let the poo stay until it is time to mow and then just mow over it. I would think it would really gunk up your mower and kill the grass.

We have always picked it up before mowing. It could be that something gets missed?

I can't imagine not picking up after my dog everytime. Our dog usually takes care of her business while out walking, but she spents a good part of her day outside and we regularly do a poop patrol to make sure nothing is sitting in the garden. We don't have grass and everything dries out pretty quickly, but it is just never left sitting.

ewwwww, I always do a pickup around the yard before mowing. First you can step in it while mowing. Second, it gets on the wheels of the mower... then that starts to smell all over the dang place and plus to me it is just damn laziness not to pick up your yard at least once a week of poop (there are some exceptions but otherwise pick it up). Going to own a dog? Pick up the poop.
Now sometimes I miss a piece and that is why I know it doesn't get sucked up in the mower..basically it just gets smashed all over the place. Then the flies are swarming around...
I don't think my neighbor ever cleans up their dog poop cause I see it all over their porch... 3 to 5 small dogs (sometimes their son's dogs are there).. and then ALL that poop... YUCK. Drives me nuts.

We pick it up. We might wait until the end of the day to pick it up, but we pick it up.
Poop Patrol is a thing!!!
Just mowing all of it over is gross.

It depends who is mowing. My husband will pick it up before he mows and my son generally doesn't. I am great about picking it up when no one mows. Our lawn gets mowed twice a week. We don't get a lot of poop in the yard since the dogs generally go for a walk several times a day. We always pick it up on our walk.
We also live in a dry climate, so that poop is petrified within twelve hours.

We pick up daily and before I mow I will double check the garden since the boy likes to spread the love.

We go out with our dog and pick up immediately to avoid this issue. However, a neighbor may allow a dog to go in our yard without picking up so DH checks it to avoid the issue of waste being flung and the smell being on a mower. Yuck!
My neighbor doesn’t pick his up and has a new riding mower that he just drives over. He has a large dog as well but I haven’t noticed a smell as of yet. I think their dog primarily goes on the farthest side to us though?

OMG. That is horrible! Yes, it should get picked up before mowing. Our lab is trained to go in a specific spot in the yard, but it gets picked up every day. Even when we’ve had giant yards. That is just pure lazy.

Thank you for answering!
As you All pick up after your pets, do you notice a smell when you mow? My husband thinks it’s just like, lingering on the grass after they pick up after their dogs, but I feel like that’s a long time to linger!

Sometimes if the poop isn't cooperative and it sticks to the grass, I can see maybe a lingering smell... but if that poop sits out and you pick it up and "break" the poop then the smell really gets out and seems to be ten times worse.. (Ummm I have really thought this poop business out!)

I pick up my dogs poo each day at the end of the day...sometimes it's every other day if my back is really giving me issues. We have a small yard so it's not too bad trying to find it. DH does the mowing and he always does a poo sweep before he mows.

My DH mows every 5 days or so. He always picks up the poop before mowing. Also, if my stepdaughters are coming, he will do a check of the yard before they get there. They are still playing outside and he doesn't want them stepping in poop.

we always pick up before the lawn is mowed. the lawn is mowed weekly and DH picks up a few times during the week too. i can't imagine leaving all that poop there and just running over it with the lawn mower.

DH does the poop patrol regularly. If it can’t be picked up because the dog has stomach issues it’s cleared up as much as possible then has buckets of water thrown over it till it’s gone. I can’t imagine him mowing over poop.

Omg, I couldn't imagine how bad it would smell it you just mowed over dog poo.
There's a good reason why Yankee Candle makes fresh cut grass scented candles, and not mowed over poo scented.

That's just gross and laziness.
I picked up poop before every mow and at least once in between and we only had a beagle.
Growing up, I had a large Airedale. It was my job to pick up after him. I picked it up every other day except in the winter. Who wants to pick up poop that had froze to the ground?

We pick up generally when they go as long as we're paying attention. But we give the yard a once over before mowing in case we missed something.

I don't pick up before I mow, it just isn't something that we've ever done -even when I was younger and lived at home my family just never picked up dog poop in the back yard. I guess animal poop was just part of nature and nature took care of it just like any other kind of animal waste. We always had at least 3 dogs and never had an issue with dog poop smell when we mowed. The only time I've ever smelled dog poop at home is when I've stepped in it. Unfortunately, all of our grass is still very much alive and growing at a ridiculous rate, if dog poop stopped that, I'd be tempted to collect it from all my neighbors and cover my yard, if it meant I didn't have to push mow when it's 104 degrees outside . The only time I've ever had a problem with gunk on the mower is when I've run over an ant hill - now that was an unholy mess. I can't imagine why your neighbors yard smelled so strongly that you could smell it just walking by. Does he have a bunch of Great Danes or something? You have my sympathies though, when we were looking at houses to buy, we looked at one next door to a person who had 3 pit bulls on chains in the back yard, there was no grass left and the stench was literally unbearable - it was a shame, because it was a really nice house that we might've put in an offer on had it not been for the funk next door. ETA: I am vigilant about picking up poop when we're in public - even off trail in the woods, I will carry my little blue bag of shit through the forest.

Our neighbor next door has a 14 year old tiny shih tzu. The neighbors down the street have 2 dogs that look similar to English springer spaniels, but with very short fur.

It's okay to mow over it. We have sprinklers that break it down.

Poop Patrol is a thing!!! The kids have to do poop patrol before DH mows. Interestingly, I never did it as a kid and we almost always had a dog when I was growing up. I assume dad just mowed over it. I've been hanging out on the porch a great deal and can't smell anything, George just had a bout of diarrhea so obviously that wasn't picked up (the outside mess at least I certainly cleaned up a great deal inside) but I haven't noticed a smell from that being mowed over. I'm militant about picking up after him on walks and trips to the dog park.

My husband refers to it as Padme patrol- even though that's the name of our former dog. Yes, we always pick up poop. I guess maybe some could still residue on the grass, but I don't smell it when the yard gets mowed. I don't breathe in too deeply, though because I'm allergic to cut grass.

My dog won’t poop in the backyard any longer. She’s gotten weird in her old age (15). But in previous years, yes we would pick up before mowing. After winter was the worst when all the snow melted and there were landmines everywhere. There are landscape companies here that advertise cleaning up your backyard after the snow melts. Gives them business in the off season.

When we had two big dogs it usually got picked up in the back yard where DD’s swings are because it was everywhere. Now that we’re down to one big dog it doesn’t always happen and sometimes he mows over it. I always pick up my little dog’s poo because she likes to go right in the walkway where *I* will be most likely to step in it, ugh. We have a huge yard and the big dog usually goes toward the way back, so no one walking by our front yard is ever going to smell it. The only time I ever smell poo in our yard is when the big dog drops a fresh one closer to the house, and if I know where it is I’ll pick it up.

Hell no, it's free fertilizer. Unfortunately, this isn't true. Unless your dog eats a diet of only vegan foods then their poop is not fertilizer. Most dog foods are protein or meat based and that can be toxic to grass or plants. Just as you wouldn't leave human waste on the lawn (unless you're vegan) you shouldn't leave dog or cat waste either. Sorry.
