I left the Mormon church at 36 and still spent most of my 40s clinically depressed. It is very complicated and my depression had much to do with genetics and location and my marriage, but there was still a lot of ex-Mormon baggage I was dealing with (and still deal with to an extent). Not officially left, but was done a long time ago. I'm still dealing with baggage for sure too.

Oh god with the self care. I hate the phrase. And cultivate. Mostly because of ali and Becky. And intentional. Or living with intention how else would I be living? I’m accidentally living? I'm living by the seat of my pants. That’s awesome! Same here.

I think Becky’s perfectionism, sense of superiority, and past success led her believe she could be a lifestyle guru. The next Martha Stewart! I think those things also led to her not being able to see her own flaws and deal with failure. The Instagram stories about her frustration about technical difficulties seemed off to me, too. She seemed on the verge of tears. I’ve cried out of frustration before but I’ve never picked up my phone and started recording so I could share those feelings and lank hair with everyone. If she needs help I sincerely hope she gets it.

Same here. I also hate "self care", mostly because Ali E uses it wayyyyy too often. There's a long list of words I hate at work, too, beginning with "stakeholders" and ending with "circle back", lol. Is deep dive one of them? I swear it has been on my radar for last year or so. We need to make BINGO cards of these phrases to make meetings more fun. I know we did stuff like this for staff meetings as teachers. I’m ok with curate when you’re talking collections (like my scrapbook supply collection, lol), but I’ll add to the scrappy list “perfectly imperfect” or “imperfect and awesome.” No thanks to those. For the work/meeting phrases, I’ll add “unpack” - as in let’s unpack that (and analyze it to death) - and “nexus”. Ugh.

Girl, what are you waiting for?!? Pure laziness. I need to get the information on the lawyer that will do it for free. I've heard when you lawyer up, they leave you alone immediately. I have it saved somewhere. I have zero desire to get the "This is an ecclesiastical matter" letter and be contacted by the bishop. Make it a whole thing.
I even got a no soliciting that is similar in wording to this. It gets ignored frequently.

I think it's quitmormon.com. I did it back in the dark ages before he was a thing, but he processed my brother's resignation a couple of months ago. That lawyer is totally getting in to heaven for all his good work.

So you can not just stop going to church and simply stop practicing? You have to lawyer up to leave the LDS church? You don't have to, but it makes it a lot easier. Here's an eye-opening page from the official church website that shows what lengths they will go to to try and "locate lost sheep" (actual quote) and get you attending again. Officially, you just have to submit a request in writing to church headquarters. Personally, I had to write and email multiple times, and (although I expressly said I didn't need a waiting period or to be contacted by anyone) I was tracked down by local church authorities... first attempting by phone, then trying through my husband, and finally showing up at my door. A few years ago, an exmormon lawyer offered up his services free of charge. It's made the process a lot less stressful for most people. There actually wasn't any way to resign from the church without being excommunicated until someone won a lawsuit...

It’s actually hilarious.

No offense to any practicing lds members here but every time I see the Leah remini commercials, I always think lds needs exposing in a similar matter. The use of fear, isolation, and scare tactics is absolutely frightening to me.

Did anyone click on the survey BH sent out today? I was going to honestly submit my answers to what classes I’d be interested in, when I realized that it would be pretty much none of them.
I’m not interested and photo and video organization. I’m not interested in learning how to scrap my past. I’m not interested in how to scrap about my nonexistent kids. Or lettering.
Why isn’t any of it about capturing stories today? And it weirdly had no instructions for the survey either. It felt very out of touch to me.

The giant cavernous hole in scrapping is documenting our non-parent, non-special-event lives - i.e., WORK. I look in every release season for fun lines about work, office, owning your own business, customers, clients, bosses (not #BossBabe bs), work stories, etc. With the exception of a few stamps every now and there - there are NONE! Every season gets documented to death: Valentine's release - every year; Spring release - every year; Travel release - every year, etc., etc., etc. Why are there no work releases - every year?!?

All of these podcasts are currently active and posting weekly. Enjoy dipping your toe into the atheist podcast world!
This is great. Thank you so much! Some might enjoy this overview of the high (but lessening) religiosity of the US vs. other developed nations:

The giant cavernous whole in scrapping is documenting our non-parent, non-special-event lives - i.e., WORK. I look in every release season for fun lines about work, office, owning your own business, customers, clients, bosses (not #BossBabe bs), work stories, etc. With the exception of a few stamps every now and there - there are NONE! That's for freaking sure. When I worked in an office, documenting normal weeks was the worst. Because I felt like I had nothing to talk about. Even now that I work remote, I still am alone at my computer for most of the day, so finding things to scrap is really tough. I think it's hard for scrapbook designers to relate because it's not their life at all. The Peas just need to start our own scrapbook line, haha.

I agree about work related stuff. I work in healthcare, I can’t take pictures of much of my day to day work because of patient privacy. I would love a thoughtful stamp set or kit to prompt me to tell stories about my work life. I can imagine gearing a kit towards teachers, office life, road warriors, etc. I just don’t think BH is the person to make it as she frequently comes across as lacking sincerity or interest in people’s lives that are structured very differently than hers.

Curious if Becky or her employees will continue to read this thread now that it has ex-Mormon posts. Can anyone comment on that?

Within my group of friends, those who are still practicing and those who aren't/left are friends. For them it is not like Scientology where you can have no contact with those who left. But that is my group and others I know who are in/not in the LDS church. I can't state how that works in Utah or within other groups.

LDS sounds a lot like trying to cancel a gym membership...or TV service...or cell service. I guess you all should be lucky they aren't selling your information to Scientology to recruit you because selling your information is the gift that keeps on giving. We considered solar for a hot minute, now we get solar panel people calling us on a relatively frequent basis. We also get calls and emails from every home warranty company known to man because we don't have a home warranty anymore, so they sold our information (gotta keep making money off of us even when it's not from us). That's likely the reason when it comes down to it. If you convince more people to not truly leave, that's more $$$$ potential for the church.
And yes, it totally does make it sound even MORE like a cult. Maybe the next time someone knocks on my door to tell me how much converting to LDS has changed their life, I should instead impart my thoughts on the benefits of atheism and my true feelings on religion. I mean, hey, they knocked on my door, so they're taking the risk, right?

Same. I am a tax attorney for the government, so there are intense tax secrecy rules. Plus most of what I do at work wouldn't make great photos anyways. I tend to still find plenty to document because I feel like i really only need 6-10 photos per week to fill a spread, but I add lots of journaling about things that go on without photos... like stuff at work. It would be great to have stamps or other embellishments that went along with this.

I wouldn't want a value kit from BH catering to these needs but I'm sure it would sell.

I’m in Utah, and I have casual friends who are both active and ex. Deeper than that is difficult, though. The church is very much a cultural thing, though, and most members’ social lives revolve around church activities. My best friend for the last ten years or so was very active, but we mostly maintained our friendship online, because she lived in another state for the majority of the time. (She actually ended up leaving the church a couple of years ago, and I was completely blindsided. It affected many of her relationships, and even her long-term job in the scrapbook industry! Her boss, who had been like a sister to her for twenty years, no longer speaks to her.) My family is fairly accepting, and it’s easier now since I am no longer the only one who left, but it still causes issues. There are certain activities that I cannot (or choose not to) participate in. And some are a little uncomfortable when I order a drink with my dinner, or wear shorts or tank tops, just like I’m a little uncomfortable when they talk about church things.

I’m an atheist too, and remember when “chubsgato” first put forth the offer on reddit. Our exmormon universe is actually pretty small, and most of us “know” each other in one way or another. The heaven thing was just a bit of exmo humor.

But it's more of a planner stamp and lots of it wasn't very useful. Sentiments like--deadline, meeting, conference call, let's get to work, schedule, email, organize, reschedule, make it a good day, get it done, you can do it. I get the impression it was really designed for someone who owns their own business/is in the craft blogging industry because of some of the sentiments like "post" or "upload" "make" "share." I'm sure she could make a better one though if she made it more for scrapbooking as opposed to planning. But I would really love one by Everyday Explorer!
