Just wanted to welcome you, Josie29. I hope you like it here. Thank you! I am really enjoying being here. I like the freedom of these forums having come from elsewhere which was a bit cliquey & I felt stifled. Lots of posts here to read too which is great

I was getting a bit frustrated with the Tim Holtz stamping platform (mainly when making large numbers of cards), and found myself beginning to rationalize potentially caving and trying to find a used MISTI to buy. It was a dark moment. BUT! Yesterday I finally put foam in both of my TH platforms, and omfg!! They’re perfect!! So if you’ve been wondering about foam in your TH platforms, just do it already!

Yes, I use fun foam in my TH platform and think it gives a much better impression. jackofallcrafts I have a Cameo and Pixscan mat and have been very pleased with the results I get. I mostly stamp and then cut out but may try the cut and stamp using the guide method to see what I think of that for a change. I get good light and haven't had issues getting a good image to trace.

I lasted about 1 minute and stopped watching
this is how long I lasted, too. My initial thought was "a company actually agreed to produce a product that you designed just because YOU couldn't cut correctly with a regular ruler and a craft knife?" because I do just fine with either a quilting ruler or a metal ruler. And I would imagine that most people can figure out how to do it just fine, or come up with some other way to cut. I can't see her selling many of those rulers. can American Crafts/Project Life go after her because it is similar to the ruler that comes with the Fuse. Same design principal, just different materials.

I was thinking that same thing - although I've heard that there are also quilting rulers with a similar design. So maybe it's not patent-able?

Did my look now but she’s selling that ruler with ‘patent pending’ written right in the description.

*massive eye-rolling* Does she really think she's the first to come up with this 'revolutionary' idea? Or just that she can use the law to bully other people out of the market? Regardless I doubt it'll sell nearly as well as a stamp positioner.

woot! "Stampin’ Up! has filed counter-claims against My Sweet Petunia challenging, among other things, the validity of one of My Sweet Petunia’s patents." I was telling my DH tonight this could happen. I log in and bang! I am psychic, ROFL. I am planning to buy SU's platform so I was discussing my SU wish list with him tonight, lol. jackofallcrafts BIG WELCOME!

Welcome josie29!
And thanks for the welcome, amayalylac!
So I went to Michael's yesterday and grabbed the Hero Arts hibiscus layering set, and put it in the Big Timmy, and OMFG how did I ever stamp without it?! Amazing craft tool! Worth every penny I spent, especially since those pennies didn't go to the Bitter Petunia. (A note: you have to condition the Hero Arts photopolymer stamps with an eraser before you ink, in case anyone else likes their designs.)
So now the Bitter Petunia is trying to patent rulers? I've read about this sort of thing before. It's called patent abuse, and it's scarily widespread, and some companies specialize in creating very broad, nebulous patents and then make their money by enforcing those patents, using the justice system as the finger on the trigger. Looks like the Bitter Petunia plans to make this her business model, ugh. Soooo thankful I had an option to her overpriced, poorly manufactured crap!

Weird! www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBYjeF3lhqk&t=3sIf you start watching at 3:05, you can see how amazing it truly is. Thanks for linking that. Wow, how revolutionary! NOT. What makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever is, if you have a stamp positioning tool, why wouldn’t you just cut strips with your regular paper cutter the size you wanted and then stamp precisely on the cutouts? I thought that was kind of the whole point of having a positioner, but then what the heck do I know? If a person were to, I don’t know, measure the stamp once you would know exactly what size the strips needed to be cut to. And I just Love the part where she says to be careful to keep the blade straight along the slot so you don’t gouge it. ROTFLOL, the very first thing I learned in art school was to save yourself time and money from the get go and get a metal edged ruler to use for cutting. Anything else is going to get bunged up no matter how careful you are!

It's not significantly different from many other ruler designs, but US Patent Law - which was originally supposed to protect individuals from companies swooping in and mass producing their work without any compensation, I might add, to promote innovation of ideas - is being (ab)used by trying to get legal purchase on designs that should be considered in the common domain.
And if you can't cut a straight sentiment strip to save your life, well there are rectangle dies out there for <5$ that'll do the job. And you need never worry about gouging one.

(I know I must be missing something, but I can't figure this out.) Thanks. I put a very thin piece of foam on the platform (covered the whole platform deck). I covered the foam w/Sizzix sticky grid. I put the paper I'm stamping on the sticky gridded foam. The paper sticks (temporarily) to the sticky grid and I can stamp over and over w/no magnets.

Weird! I’m still trying to figure out the misti patent. 1 it’s not a new idea WRMK have been using the letterpress for years it was displayed at CHA several years before the Misti patent. It’s not a novel thing to use a ‘hinge’ to stamp, I can’t figure out why she was granted a patent. 2 the tonic/Tim Holtz platform is different in so many ways the sides are not enclosed, the hinge itself is Totally different because the top is removeable, it’s also much sturdier than the crappy Misti hinges, it is not really at all like hers. I just do not get that AT ALL it’s like someone fell asleep at the patent office.

I watched the first part of the video about her ruler. My first thought was, even if I did not know who she was, and had no concerns about doing business with her, I still would not buy it because it looks like a pain to use. You have to stroke "lightly" and multiple times to cut. Seriously? Could it be because otherwise you are likely to cut into the plastic ruler?
There are easier ways of cutting out a stamped phrase. I could trim off the unwanted parts easily and faster with my Tonic mini trimmer. Or use a thin die as was already suggested. I can think of a few other options, all of which I would prefer to using a ruler that requires me to "stroke lightly" with an exacto knife several times to get it to cut through.
It would probably be faster and easier to create a rectangle cutting file of the right size in my Cameo, cut the rectangle from cardstock with a wide border to make a template, then do the "cut first, stamp second" method. I could make multiple cards using that same template and stamp, cut and stamp a bunch of them, and it would probably still take me less time than lining everything up and "stroking lightly" several times per side with her ruler, for just the one stamped phrase.
It's not worth the time it would take.

Cutting lightly multiple times is a good way to get a bad cut if that ruler shifts even a tiny bit.

I can actually see the reasoning behind the ruler invention. I would try to use a kraft knife to fussy cut but I couldn’t get the hang of it. I could never seem to keep it properly against the metal edge of my ruler. I’m ambidextrous, tried with both hands, and still nope. The My Bitter Patooey ruler would be great for that and I’d be interested except for two things: 1. There’s no metal edge in the slot so it would shed in no time, and 2. I would never give that woman a cent of my hard earned money.

I find most craft and hobby knives harder to use because they invite a pencil grip, which doesn't put the blade at the right angle nor offer a strong enough hold. A box cutter is meant to fit in the palm of your hand, with the index finger extended over the top of the tool or far side, and the thumb on the opposite side. Much more secure and easier to control (in my experience, your mileage may vary). They're also fairly inexpensive - just make sure you get one from a general hardware store / online, not from the craft department.

I would never give that woman a cent of my hard earned money. That was pretty much my reaction too. I can see the logic to it, but not sure if the design is actually good because of course you're going to nick that channel with your knife sooner or later. I'd also rather get either the big or small ruler, as at least one commenter on the video also said, I don't want to be forced into getting both if that pushes the price point where I think it would be going. I like all the markings for lining stuff up and I can see where that beats the metal/cork rulers I have that I can't see through. But like scrapnnana I can think of a few solutions that would suit my crafting style - trimming with my trimmer, or trimming a piece with my trimmer before stamping onto it - which I do a bunch anyway because I like to use the scraps I have on my desk. I would rather stamp a few to get it right than mess around with getting out a craft knife and carefully cutting multiple times. I also have an envelope writing guide that works better than her pencil lines solution, and I barely have the patience to be bother getting that out 90% of the time. It's easier to grab a basic ruler and writer above it or just let my envelopes look like I scrawled the address on there (because I did). Anyway if this ruler is a copy/slight adjustment of something that's already on the market (which I'm sure it is) I'll buy it from someone else if I decide I "need" one.

Did you see all the positive, glowing things people were writing on that video? I don't get it. I read them too & rolled my eyes Her cliquey Fan Club. A few years ago, I bought some Perfect Layers Tools (which I use alot) but on the one that I use the most - which is the 1/8" - I have cut into the edge of the ruler with my Craft Knife so it is wonky in that part of it. The plastic is really hard & even though I was trying to be careful, a super-sharp blade in a craft knife can cut into it. Thankfully the ruler is long enough so that I can use a different section of it to cut & I am being uber-careful how I cut - but I reckon the MSP ruler would get damaged in the same way & because it's small, it would be a bin job. And no doubt, if people ended up with this problem, MSP wouldn't entertain any thoughts of her product being inferior because it would be user-error I also have a Perfect Papercrafting Ruler which has a steel ruler on both sides and the middle bit has something you press down which has a grippy thing underneath so it stays put on whatever you are cutting and I use it occasionally - but mostly just a steel ruler with cork underneath it & my craft knife.

Watching the video I can see if you have to make that many passes the chance if the ruler moving increases. Especially since there is no grippy material on the ruler to hold it down.
