I have been having horrible heartburn for the past year and finally broke down and scheduled an appointment with a Gastroenterologist. So he scheduled an Upper GI Endoscopy and then he snuck in the colonoscopy! LOL! I had to have it done anyway since I turned 50 this year. The procedure is on a Monday so at least I'll be at home Sunday for the prep work. Any tips and/or suggestions?

it is not as bad as people make it out to be. Which prep do you have? That will help with advice. I've only done the gallon jug (which you do NOT drink all of!) and it was fine. Stock the bathroom with whatever you will need because you wont be leaving it for several hours. And once you start drinking, NEVER trust a fart.

The prep is the hard part. The procedure is the easy part. You'll be sleeping and won't feel a thing. As for the prep, you get to drink a lot of salty liquid or other concoctions that will clean you out. There are variations of prep. Then you poop til it's nothing but clear water. Then you go to the surgery center or GI lab and you'll be given fun drugs. Once the IV is inserted the worst is over. When you wake up you'll likely not remember much, but you will feel loads lighter.
My advice is be thisclose to your bathroom. Keep reading material in there and maybe even a pillow. Everyone does a cleanse at their own pace. It can take a couple hours to kick in once you've ingested the drink. So, don't worry that it didn't work. Trust me, it's bombs away once it starts. Keep gentle wipes in the bathroom. Don't drink anything red, blue or purple. That can give false results. Don't worry. It's not a horrible experience, just not pleasant. For me, the drink is the hard part. For others, they can guzzle the stuff down w/o flinching.
As for endoscopy, I have them routinely. Easy peasy. They'll do that test first. You won't feel it, because you'll be snoozing. Your throat might be a tad sore afterwards, because of the tube, but it isn't bad. I never mind EGD, because it's so easy and you don't feel it.
Good luck. These tests save lives.

Set up a TV tray in the bathroom with a book, tablet, etc to occupy your self. Have some good aloe wet wipes. Just make yourself comfy for a few hours. Oh have some good room spray handy or a candle going.

eat yellow jello for two days ahead.. so little to come out. my docs have me eat no seeds for 7 days ahead of time. I hate the prep.. it makes me want to throw up.. but you can do it.
the procedure is not much with a quick recovery

Drink, drink, drink. Be very hydrated or they won't be able to find a vein when it's time and it becomes a big hassle.

I've had 2 already this year. Prep is the worst part and isn't that bad. Plan on being home at 5 pm when you drink the first bottle. It's probably that magnesium stuff. Keep it in the refrigerator, I've done lemon, it's not bad. Has taken about an hour to start working for me. I wasn't confined to the bathroom, just back and forth a few times.
The first one I was very dehydrated so I felt horrible. The second one, I was better hydrated so I felt better. First one I was trying to stomach Gatorade and water with electrolytes. I hated them so I didn't drink as much. Second time around I stuck to regular water and did much better because I could stand more of it.
They have you out before they start and you won't remember a thing. Some people go out to eat on their way home. I felt fine, but was tired so I headed home.

eat less and far more liquids on the day before (or two) so you get "clear" faster.

I also had to drink the second half more slowly, since the first half made me vomit. I started the second half of the liquid an hour early.
The procedure itself is a piece of cake.

The Suprep cherry flavored drink was THE worst part of the whole procedure. I added ice and drank it from a straw as quickly as I could. From what I recall, my drinks were spaced out further than four hours apart and it was gag worthy to try and drink that stuff early in the morning. I didn't have jello, but did drink clear broth throughout the day. I also had the endoscopy/colonoscopy combo and the only side effect I had was sneezing and a runny nose for several days from the oxygen.

Funny that you should post this today. I'm having one tomorrow. I'm about to take a couple of pills. And in a few hours I get to take an entire bottle of Miralax mixed with Gatorade. I live at the lake during the summer and we have only one bathroom here, so I am going to go to our house in town so that I can poop my brains out without inconveniencing anyone else. I'm really wishing that I would have done this as a beginning of summer thing instead.

My last colonoscopy was 2016 and I’m not due until 2027 for the next one. I wrote myself a list of reminders that I add to my planner every year so I don’t forget when the next one rolls around.
Soft, soft toilet paper. And nice wet bottom wipes, too.
Preparation H if you have a problem with hemorrhoids. The prep seems to aggravate mine terribly.
Have Gas-X ready for the gas pains you get after the procedure.
That’s my list! You’ve gotten good advice here, you’ll be fine!

Like Scrapmaven said, the EDG is easy. I had my very first colonoscopy 3 years ago and dreaded the prep with all I had. I didn’t like either one of the preps my doctor prescribed, so I looked online and found the one ellen used and did that one. I mixed the Miralax with a two-liter bottle of lemonade. I couldn’t even tell the Miralax was in it. There is no way I ever could have gotten the GoLYTELY down. I had it a number of years ago before a surgery, and actually cried it was so bad.
Besides the prep drink a lot of other fluids. I drank tea. Best of luck!!

I had my first two weeks ago. Things I did/wish I had known/would do differently:
1) Drink lots and lots of water. My prep started at 7 the evening before with 32 oz. of Gatorade and Miralex. Part 2 was the same mixture at 4 a.m. I was EXTREMELY light-headed and felt awful because I was so dehydrated when I got up at 4. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to do the procedure but eventually felt better. I hate Gatorade but managed to get it down.
2) I had to take Dulcolax at 9 a.m. the morning before the procedure. Thank goodness I was at home and not at work. It would have been ugly.
3) I set up a TV tray in the bathroom with my iPad and had some youtube videos ready. That worked well.
4) I had a lot of gas after my procedure, so DH and I went on a little walk so it could work its way out. DH was only willing to do that because he was starving and wanted me to feel well enough to go to lunch.
The rest was fine. The actual procedure was a breeze. DH has had several, and the liquid diet was the worst for him (See #4 -- he's always hungry). He was pretty damn hangry for two days.

Put lots of vaseline around your rectum/anus as it becomes very irritated from the process. This will help with the irritation.

eat less and far more liquids on the day before (or two) so you get "clear" faster. I agree! I did this and my prep really wasn't too bad. At least two days ahead of my prep, I started on lots of liquids and only had chicken or beef broth.
Interestingly for me, I'm just home from a doctor's visit and have to schedule a EGD soon. I'm relieved to read it's a very easy procedure.

A Pea suggested having a lemon to suck on between sips of the prep. I think this was spot on. I’d normally never suck on a lemon, but it worked with the prep.
My purging symptoms lasted much longer than usual with my drinks. It was a 2 hour drive to the hospital where I was having the colonoscopy, so I got up at 3 am to do the second part of the prep. It still wasn’t early enough. It was a loooong ride to the hospital in DC morning rush hour traffic. The lack of sleep and all the stress of incontinence was the worst part of the procedure.
If you are a natural redhead and it’s no longer obvious (my hair has gone auburn over the years), be sure to tell them. Many redheads carry a gene where it takes longer for redheads to go under anesthesia (or meds to take effect), you need more medication to be effective, and it takes longer to pull out of it for that reason. I woke up mid scope, but slid right back under again.

Look up a low residue diet and start following it now.
Boudreaux butt paste, put that on before the action starts.
One of those squeeze bottles full of warm water. Spray yourself clean and gently pat dry.

Make sure that you don't eat leafy lettuce for at least 4 days prior to the prep. Lettuce is very difficult to get "rid or cleanse" out of your system. Avoid red meat for those same 4 days prior. Eat light meals, like soups for the few days prior. Avoid seeds, like those found in bread or in a salad or snacks. Remember that what goes in, must come out!

I agree that if you have normal/healthy bowel habits anyway then the prep is no big deal. I probably went to the toilet 4 times in total, then it was done. Main advice - follow whatever instructions your doctor gives. Don't mess with the prep based on what anyone tells you online. You don't want it to be cancelled or have them not be able to see what they need to because you didn't follow the instructions correctly. That just wastes everyone's time...including yours. If you are struggling with the taste of the prep - drink it through a straw, that way it goes down the back of your throat and misses most of the taste buds. Walk around as much as possible afterwards (unless for some reason they tell you not to) this will help you to pass the gas that they use to inflate the bowel. Sometimes the gas used for the colonoscopy migrates upwards and settles between your shoulder blades causing discomfort for an hour or two. Sit upright in a recliner or a rocker to help it pass. No it doesn't. This is completely false in several ways. If this were to happen something has gone VERY wrong and they perforated your bowel. In a colonoscopy they pump gas into the bowel only...there is no way it can "migrate" upwards through various body parts, the only way out is via a fart. The gas will grumble around the abdomen and may cause crampy pain until it is released (farted out). In laparoscopic abdominal surgery they inflate the abdominal cavity which is a different spot to where the gas in a colonoscopy goes. In those instances it also does NOT "migrate" upwards to between the shoulders...the gas can sit under the diaphragm and irritate the phrenic nerve which can feel like shoulder tip pain....but there is no gas between your shoulders. *If* (very rare) you were to get shoulder tip pain after a colonoscopy then something is very wrong (ruptured bowel, internal bleeding etc) and you need to go straight to ER...do not sit in a recliner for several hours and wait.

Mine is a done deal. It was hard to drink 64 ounces of Gatorade mixed with Miralax in two hours. At about the third glass I was feeling like this was BS. When I got to the seventh I was feeling like I just couldn't do it. I got all 8 down and I felt like I was going to vomit when I was done. In the morning I had to drink a bottle of magnesium citrate followed by a glass of water and that kind of sucked too. It did not take all that long to get cleaned out and I was not feeling like I was chained to the toilet. My butt didn't hurt either - pleasant surprise. I got up once in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. I felt pretty icky when I went to the hospital. I was tired, hungry and just wanted a cup of coffee since I had a headache. My procedure went well. I know the anesthetist fairly well and when he told me he had a special mix put together just for me, I felt pretty darn good about being put under. Right after he put it in my IV, my husband left and the next thing I knew a nurse was waking me up. I asked if it was time for me to go in and she told me the whole thing was done. At that time I felt like I had just awoke from a long nap on the couch. They brought me a cup of coffee and some cookies and I visited with my husband afterward. Since I was starving they brought me another coffee and pack of cookies. I was tired the rest of the afternoon, but I went on my usual evening walk with my dogs. I had a bowl of ice cream with strawberry syrup for dinner. I deserved that. I feel completely normal now. I would advise that you get some sort of medication for dealing with gas. I had some gas pains, but I took something for it and that helped a lot. I am off the hook for 10 years now. Glad it's done!

I had to do the gallon of Gatorade and Miralax prep and had to go to the store after the first half because I knew I would puke if I had to drink any more of that one flavor of Gatorade. I normally don’t mind Gatorade but after that much of the same kind it was pretty disgusting. Needless to say, I haven’t had a single sip of Gatorade since!

I forgot to mention, DH had the procedure several years before me and said it was difficult trying remember everything the doctor told him after his procedure. When it came time for my procedure, I told the doctor I wanted DH in the room when it came time to discuss the initial results. It was good having him there to ask the questions that I wasn’t alert enough to ask.
