Bernie Sanders' 'Stop BEZOS' bill targets worker pay at Amazon and Walmartby Tami Luhby @luhby September 5, 2018: 7:42 PM ET As promised, Senator Bernie Sanders introduced a bill Wednesday that would tax Amazon, Walmart (WMT) and other big companies whose workers collect public assistance. Named the Stop Bad Employers by Zeroing Out Subsidies, or the Stop BEZOS Act after Amazon (AMZN) founder Jeff Bezos, Sanders' bill would levy a tax on large companies equal to the value of the public benefits that their workers receive. He argues that if employers paid a living wage, taxpayers would save $150 billion a year on the government assistance programs, including food stamps, Medicaid and public housing. "We do not believe that taxpayers should have to expend huge sums of money subsidizing profitable corporations owned by some of the wealthiest people in this country. That's what a rigged economy is about," said Sanders, who introduced the bill with California Representative Ro Khanna, a Democrat. The independent senator from Vermont recently asked Amazon workers to tell him about their work conditions. He shared a few examples from workers who said that they make only $11 an hour or $13.25 an hour, which isn't enough to live on. Sanders also lashed out Wednesday at Burger King, McDonald's (MCD) and American Airlines (AAL) for paying wages so low that their workers have to sign up for government benefits. Amazon, however, called Sanders' assertions "inaccurate and misleading" in a blog post last week. The company says that Sanders' data for food stamp recipients includes people who only worked at Amazon for a short period of time or who chose to work part-time. The median US salary for full-time Amazon employees is $34,123, it says. Sanders' figure includes part-time employees and those who work globally. *** The bill would create powerful incentives for employers to shy away from hiring low-income workers, who are more likely to qualify for Medicaid, food stamps or housing assistance, said a report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Also, it may lead some companies to pressure their employees not to sign up for benefits. Plus, the legislation likely wouldn't do much to raise wages, the center said. Companies would have to raise wages for all workers in particular job categories, which would be more expensive than paying the new tax, the center said. money.cnn.com/2018/09/05/technology/business/bernie-sanders-amazon-walmart-worker-pay/index.htmlHummmmmmmmmmm, our Military uses SNAP (food stamps). thinking not using Medicaid or housing assistance, but maybe they do when living off base ?

This is nothing but grandstanding by Bernie Sanders. What Bernie and the rest of the gang that wants to run for President in 2020 should come up with are programs that give low wage workers the skills they need to to get higher paying jobs. That alone will force the Amazons and Walmart’s to pay more in wages. There are plenty of jobs that employers can’t fill because they can’t find people with the skills they need or that can pass d4ug tests. THAT is where the Democrats focus should be, not some stupid grandstanding bill that is not going anywhere. What a waste.

the Times must, for National Security purposes... turn the person over for National SECURITY purposes?!? For having an opinion? I didn't see anything truly classified spelled out in that Op-Ed piece. He really DOES think he's a king, doesn't he?!? 'off with his head!' (here we can make ourselves feel a bit better by picturing Trump dressed like the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland...) it could be a good thing . . . not a reach for national security to determine there is enough evidence to start the removal process . . .

As I said on the class size thread, Bezos' interest on his $140 billion in wealth CONSERVATIVELY comes to about 7 BILLION PER YEAR. Just his annual interest on his wealth is enough to hire 100,000 teachers and pay them $70,000/year. But carry on, Amazon, consolidating wealth while your workers work in stifling warehouses and pony up for assistance paid for by the middle class who can't afford sophisticated off-shore tax dodges.

That's like $5 to you or me. That $10,000,000 out of $140,000,000,000 was supposed to make you think that way. I guess it worked.

Both things can be true - Amazon can treat its workers poorly and Bezos can be a guy who donates a lot to good causes. My SIL worked for Amazon as a warehouse manager for several years. The pay was good, but she was treated horribly - there’s a very anti-woman attitude in some parts of management. She finally left because the money wasn’t worth it. The problem as Amazon gets larger is that, like Walmart, their warehouse is often the only game in town for unskilled workers. Without competition, they can treat people however they want. Bernie’s bill isn’t going to change that. I’m an Amazon shopper but I’m thinking they need to be broken up in some way. Monopolies aren’t good for anyone.

A look into the mind of Trump and his base: Totally legit unbiased questions..... Wow, yeah. I didn’t like how your name and email are required in order for your responses to be recorded. I prefer my polls to be anonymous, TYVM. The last thing I need is a bunch more junk spam emails flooding my inbox, ugh. Ha ha, wonder if I can put in the email address for the White House in that field?

If you enter your email, you will continue to get emails from the Trump camp (and get put on a list of Republicans in your area). At least that is the only reason why I can explain why I am on his mailing list now. lol. He sends out emails like this all of the time. I also got several mailings that were named various things, including "official census information". They were just like this survey.

He won't answer...
He damn well knows that if he did speak to ANYONE in Trump's lawyers office, he must recuse himself from that investigation....
Fucking liar just like his boss.
He was shown up as the inadequate and unqualified candidate he clearly is for SCOTUS. He was struggling under questioning, until Lee chimed in with his half assed distraction.

No she got him. She knew the answer and had the evidence. He DID discuss the Mueller investigation with Trump's lawyer's law firm. That could be accessory to obstruction, a federal felony.
