Despite growing up in the era of casseroles, I don't remember my Mom ever making one and I think I am grateful. She was an awful cook as it was which leads me to believe that this is the reason I am such a thin person - I ate little as a kid. I can't even imagine what she would have done to a casserole. She made boxed Mac n Cheese using half the cheese packet. AWFUL! I am not much of a food tossed together touching person for the most part and definitely never tuna. The smell of tuna makes me gag. My husband loves that crap and it kills me when he eats it. Yuk!. His Mom loved to make casseroles. I am sure tuna noodle was on their menu. I did see lasagne mentioned as a casserole and it never fit into the stereotype for me but if it is indeed a casserole, that would be the one I like.

my mum didn't make casseroles that I remember - Dad was a meat and potatoes type We did have skillet meals on occasion - German Potato Salad is one that I still make today but she also made the hamburger/tuna helpers. I made tuna casserole tonight for the first time in years - DD18 gags on tuna so I don't usually cook with it anymore but with her at University...it was really good (probably not very good for us). I make lasagne occasionally -I prefer a white broccoli version to the traditional red/meat version but I've made both. I don't make it often as we can't eat through the leftovers Cottage pie and shepherd's pie are probably the ones I make most although I'm not sure I would call them casseroles per se.

Being Asian/Filipino, I didn’t have casseroles growing up.
I associate casseroles with holiday parties.
My favorites are green bean casserole, broccoli cheese and rice casserole, funeral potatoes, and of course pineapple casserole.

Mercy. I'd starve if I never made casseroles.

Loads of them! But was raised on them. From Funeral Potatoes to Shephards pie, tator tot casserole came later and when we mrried. Also do it with Cream of chicken instead of mushroom for Tatortot and Funeral Potoatoe.. my mom would also add fresh cream and extra cheese! Her's was always the best. I don't know if cheice would be considered a casserole. I've tried several times to duplicate my moms reciepes of the Funeral Potatoes and the ceiche but never get it like hers. Now it just depends on the wieather and the mood.Ohh and Tuna was the only one she didn't do thank goodness. we all loved sea food but not like that and not Tuna lol!

I only remember tuna casserole when growing up and I hated it with a passion. The smell of the tuna when it was cooking grossed me out so much. And...no potato chips on top, I think my Mom put bread crumbs on it? Needless to say, I've never made it for my family. I guess if you count lasagna and eggplant parm (yuck!) we also had those. I tried making lasagna a few times, but it's a lot of work for something that is almost as good when Mrs. Stouffer can make it for me.

My mother was from Italy and she never made a casserole. I love making them for my family because, due to all the preferences, I would be making about three very boring meals repeatedly.
ETA My family enjoys baked ziti, chicken enchilada bake, broccoli chicken divan, chicken pot pie, and tater tot casserole made with roasted potatoes on top.

Now that I've read everyone's responses, I realize that my mom made lots of them . Chicken and rice Beef-a-roni Lasagna Chicken and beef enchiladas Turkey casserole with stove top on top I don't make them for my own family. That bunch of picky eaters won't eat combo foods like that.

I love casseroles! We had two that were childhood staples that I'm sure no one else here has ever eaten. 1. Bean Sprout Casserole Put cooked ground beef in a casserole dish. Layer frozen peas and a drained CAN of bean sprouts over the beef. Top with a can of mushroom soup and crumbled potato chips. Bake. Serve with potato chips. Yum 2. Kedgeree Mix cooked white rice, canned salmon, peas and chopped boiled egg whites in a casserole dish. Top with crumbled egg yolks. Bake No seasoning added to either dish, not even salt & pepper. I was nostalgic about Kedgeree, looked it up, discovered quite a different dish and added Jamie Oliver's version to our dinner line up. We never had tuna casserole growing up and my kids love a version I make with yogurt & sour cream instead of canned soups. Had the bean sprout one, with soy sauce and those crunchy noodles.

Chipper Tuna Casserole -- I'm pretty sure it was from the BH&G Jr (red checked) cookbook. It was probably the first thing I ever made for family dinner. I'm certain it was my first cookbook. Now I'm wondering if I still have the cook book. And I'm actually a little hungry for Chipper Tuna Casserole.

During my 70's childhood, Schilling made two boxed casserole ingredient mixes to which you would just add meat--Taco Casserole in a green box and Tamale Pie in a yellow box. How we loved them, especially taco casserole. It had mini triangular tortilla chips to sprinkle on top. Other than those, I don't remember eating casseroles. P.S. Jello 123 for dessert! I loved that tamale pie and 123 jello

My Mom made a yummy tuna casserole. With potato chips on top!
She also made a delicious chicken and rotel tomato with nacho flavored doritos on top that I LOVED.
I make a few. Shepard's pie, fish pie with a potato topping, broccoli rice and chicken, enchiladas, mexican style and then what I can KC style with cream cheese and TJ"s salsa verde! Yum not authentic but yum!
I like the comfort factor and the one pan factor, and the make ahead factor.

The only casseroles we had when I was growing up were at Thanksgiving--green bean casserole etc. When I was a Girl Scout we had a cooking class and the dish we learned how to make was a tuna casserole. So I was pretty excited: tuna: OK, potato chips: YES!, peas? peas? blech! I detest peas.

Once every few months my mom would make this chicken, rotel tomato, cheese, Doritos, and cream soup casserole. My dad and I loved it. She got the recipe from a magazine. But other than that, we never had casseroles of any kind.
My husband's mom made all kinds of casseroles when he was growing up. He said they had one twice a week. Tuna, chicken, hamburger, ham...
Sometimes we make one, but not often. Maybe once every other month. I like broccoli rice casserole with chicken.

My mom made a casserole that came from her 4H cookbook, circa early 60’s. It was layers of potato chips, sliced hard-boiled eggs, tuna, and white sauce (made with solid Crisco, no less). We still dust off that re I’ve a couple of times a year. Total comfort food.

Oh god, my stepfather made so many casseroles growing up. I have tried to block them all out. I didn't like them then and I don't like them now. Same here. My mom could make hamburger, chicken or tuna into a casserole a hundred different ways each. Blech. One of the perks of being a grownup and moving out is that you never have to make stuff you don’t like to eat. And FTR, I don’t consider lasagna to be casserole.

The ingredients or the fact that all of the ingredients are touching each other. My friend's son hates it when the ingredients are mixed together, but he likes each of the ingredients.

Yes a HUGE part. Too many to list but regularly we had things like mexican casseroles, tuna noodle casseroles, mexicali meat casserole and the like. The one that stands out the most was "potato bake" a potato casserole that my mom added a protein to, to make a meal - usually either ham or chicken. It was boiled diced potatoes mixed with cream of mushroom and cream of chicken soup plus some melted butter and sour cream. Top with cheddar cheese.
Very much a comfort food for our family.
DD12 hates most foods mixed together so rarely do we have a casserole.

I'm Lutheran. The list is long. . My favorites are pasta with hamburger, tomatoes, bacon, and onions (kind of like a cheeseburger, and the other one had noodles, hamburger, onions, Colby jack cheese/velveeta, and green olives. It was topped with chow mein noodles. I am sure anyone reading the ingredients would feel slightly ill, but it is just one of the comfort foods I love.

I loved tuna casserole when I was about age 12. But, I must confess-- I think the real reason was because it had potato chips in it...and we NEVER< NEVER< NEVER had potato chips. I know this was the main reason we loved the infamous Bean Sprout Casserole. We could choke anything down for those rare potato chips.

my mom (a good minnesota gal) only made one casserole.. noodles, canned veggie soup and ground beef. we only had it on picnics.. rarely. we never had any of the regular casseroles, since we had so many food allergies.. most of them were out.
I rarely if ever make a casserole.. mostly lasagne.. but it is just not my thing.
my kids weren't too fond of any either.

As a child of the '70s, I ate many casseroles. My favorites are tuna noodle, tater tot, lasagna, chicken and rice, and scalloped potatoes (my grandmother put in hamburger while my mom put in ham).
So far, I haven't experienced a version of "funeral hotdish" (ground beef, macaroni and some type of tomato product) that I like.
