Update: I took it back today and the manager cut me a new piece and also told me they are taught to make sure the cut edges line up and to cut to the inch. I explained you should first check the grain is running straight and not just line up the cut edges. Yip dee do, when she cut mine she made sure to give me 2" extra. I can see how when they are really busy that it is easiest to just cut but maybe that is when they SHOULD be giving the extra 2" as they don't have time to check the grain. Original post: I am so mad right now! DH was running errands up near Joann’s and if you have ever been there on the weekend you know what a huge favor it was for him to go in and pick up a yard of fabric for me to finish a baby blanket. Just went to cut it and they cut 35”. So now I have to go back tomorrow. Normally 1” wouldnt matter but when the customer is expecting a certain size they should get it or they’d be on here venting about me

Not normal. Although I am not so happy with them, for another reason, right now..........

Not normally-usually they actually give you a little extra more than you asked

It's normal around here. AND if there is 37" on a bolt and you only need one yard, they will either charge you for that damn inch or they'll cut it off and throw it away. I hate buying fabric at Joann's and avoid it unless it's an amazing deal or something I have to have and don't have time to order online.
eta: there was just a thread about this exact thing on a sewing fb group and there were several dozen replies that said they also get shorted there on a regular basis. If y'all get extra, consider yourself lucky.

I haven’t ever noticed, but I do watch pretty carefully when they’re measuring. And because I’m paranoid that I won’t have enough for my project, I always tend to overbuy anyway and end up with at least 12”-18” I didn’t really need!

Totally depends on the clerk here. Some will do the inch throwaway thing and some will overage to the customer benefit. I think it is because the management is kind of crappy to the employees and the employees then take it out any way then can.

I got shorted last year on fabric that was $45 a yard!! I asked for 5 yards and it was just under 4 yards. When I realized it I called and they wanted me to bring it in before I cut it. I was livid, I live 45 minutes away and it was literally the day/nap time I had for making the dress and I needed to get it done. I didn't use the full width of the fabric, needed the decorative edge for the finish. So I took the other piece in for them to measure. I got my money back for the one yard, but no apology. And I don't shop at that Joanns any more if I can avoid it. Thankfully there are 4 in our area.

I wish there was a locally-owned craft store near me. Michaels is my go-to because all I have here are the big three. I'll put up with Hobby Lobby being closed on Sunday and the corporate HL decisions I do not agree with, though, before I'll shop at Joann's.

I like hancock's of paducah, fabric.com and some etsy stores. For apparel fabrics I like So Sew English (they have slow shipping though) and Girl Charlee. I'm not sure if they have the minky types.

I wish they would cut it at 37 inches so I would have that inch after I washed the fabric.
I think it depends on who is cutting it. At Craft warehouse, I am always slightly shorted by one cutter, and I am sad because the other gal that I like and so does everybody else , retired last week.

Was it the woman with the beautiful white hair that retired? In Beaverton? Eta I only buy fabric at Joanns for school stuff because the quality is so poor, but our ladies are either exactly on or give a bit extra

My girlfriend is a seamstress and she told me that the way that they have them measure the fabric makes you lose a 1/4" with each yard. It annoys the heck out of her and she has called them on it and they won't change the way they measure. I guess the corporate office is all over them to not over measure. It's the only place I have ever bought fabric that wasn't generous with their cuts of fabric.

It’s gotten so bad at one of ours that I check both ends (I buy a lot in 1/4” increments) to ensure that both ends and middle are 9” all the way through, and I always start off by stating I need every square inch!
I worked for Joann’s years ago and you are taught NOT to give any extra. Measure to the increments request, snip it and place it in the guide and cut it.
You were subject to a manager coming up and checking and if you even had a thumbs width extra, you’d get into trouble.
Funny too because I also know what they pay for fabrics—literally pennies a yard in most cases.

Wow, I can't even believe this. I don't have a JoAnn, but my local fabric store always gives an additional inch or two. Their only redeeming quality, IMO.
My fabric pet peeve is when the cut is not straight. Come on people, you have that ginormous table, sharp scissors and a guide. Cut a straight-ish line!

The people at my JoAnns can't always cut straight and I always point out if I see an uneven edge so they will measure from the correct point. I usually ask for the next size up to make sure I have enough for whatever I am doing g, so 1/3 of a yard instead of 1/4. I might need those 3 extra inches. If not, they go in for a scrap quilt.
I do like that at my JoAnns, if there is anything 1 yard or less left on the bolt they will offer it to you at 50% off. My favorite cutter will measure what's on the bolt before I say how much I want and I can adjust my amount accordingly.

I think Hancock's Fabrics closed a few years ago. I remember going to a clearance sale at one a couple of hours away and the signs said the entire chain was closing.

Also, it was Michaels who bought Hancock Fabrics (after they either closed or were going to close-they bought the intellectual property and the customer database).

No JoAnns here but I hate it when they measure, snip where to cut and then rip and not 😱 use the scissors. I’ve refused to accept the fabric when they do this and now ask them before they measure so please use the scissors to cut it.
They tend to cut a little overage here, but not all the time.

So frustrating! This issue is why I always buy extra. JoP I'm like over ripping the fabric.

My first job was in a fabric store (not Joanns). There are actually some fabrics that you are supposed to snip and rip and not cut in order to maintain the grainline. Silks, etc. You also should always cut plaids in a single layer and NOT folded so they are nice and straight. I do shop at Joanns for thread and things and sometimes fabric but I hate it - they are always so slow and the line for both cutting and checkout takes forever. Sadly it's the best choice here for some things.

Ripping gives you a straight edge.

Ripping fabric is actually what you want to do. It maintains the cross grain and the fabric is straight if it's lined up on the rip. If your fabric is "crooked" after it's been ripped, it was rolled on the bolt a little off. If you wash the fabric, it will come out of the dryer straight again. If you don't wash your fabric, you should straighten the fabric with the selvedge and the rips, not the fold from being on the bolt.

It seems like ripping makes about a 1" wavy edge though. And you pay for everything up to that edge in a lot of stores.

My Joanns invariably shorts me, and if I get home and straighten the grain, and I am short, I take it back and make them cut me a new piece. I hate relying on Joanns for fabric, but the closest quilt store and 'good' apparel fabric store are over an hour away. I also hate the signage issues in my store. Nothing gets put in the correct location, as as the store manager at my local store told me, it is up to me to read the signs and make sure that the sale price applies to that line. I have often had things cut, then refused to buy them because they were not on sale. I do a lot of fashion sewing for myself and my DD. And I prefer not to buy online due to color variations and misrepresentation, and I like to touch the fabric.
Joanns also hiked the prices of the seam binding, thread etc about 10 days ago, but have not changed the signage for pricing. (thanks to the pea who gave that heads up). In my state if you are overcharged you get the difference back, plus $5 if you leave the store after being overcharged. I have gone back 3 times in the past 10 days because they overcharged on thread since the price hike.
I usually go the NYC about 3-4 times a year, and shop the garment district, but haven't been able to this year due to health issues. But I am going for 10 days at Christmas, and my DD promised 2 days in the district. If you purchase fabric there, they will ship at no/minimal cost, and you don't have to pay NYC sales tax! I am getting excited.
