when a teenager is reading a book, and you say ‘what are you reading’ and the kid says ‘a book’, and then gives you that look.
What is this type of answer called? Snarky, sarcastic, they all seem too vague. There has got to be a name for it. Thoughts?

Disrespectful is good. I didn’t think about that one because it’s not a teenager doing this but an adult. I guess it is disrespectful.

If I were writing that scene, I'd write:
"What are you reading?" I asked of the teenager with a book in her hand. "A book," she smirked.

I'd say it was sarcastic and I would give a sarcastic reply right back, i.e. "Oh gee, really, is that what a book looks like?" But, I can be sarcastic.

My response would be, "I did not know you could read" Stating the obvious in such a situation might be condescending, or it might be belaboring a point, but it is definitely rude.

Disrespectful is good. I didn’t think about that one because it’s not a teenager doing this but an adult. I guess it is disrespectful. Your OP says a teen. I do think there are times something done by a teen or child is disrespectful while it might not be so disrespectful when done by an adult who is my peer. IMO, it is rude to ask someone what they are reading while they are reading... it is like interrupting a conversation to ask an obvious question, "Who are you talking to"? Instead, when they put the book down ask "what is your book about?" Which is really what you want to know. You can see what they are reading. You are more apt to get the answer you want without the snark.

Snarky, smartass, sarcastic. I don’t think disrespectful because I myself would give the same answer.

Rude, disrespectful, smart aleck. It's an unnecessarily rude response to a simple question.

My Mother would’ve said to that reply, “Don’t be fresh” in her aggravated Mom voice.
I would call it smart-ass.

Maybe they are reading something embarrassing and don't want to discuss it. "What are you reading?" "Oh, it's 'How to Wrangle your Genital Herpes in 10 Easy Steps' Great read! You should pick it up!"

I would just call it a basic reply. Disrespect? Hardly. I’ve given answers like that before. If anything it’s sarcasm.
Like when someone sees me cooking dinner and I hear “whatcha doin?” I usually answer with “I’m scrapbooking”.

"Leave me the f**K alone, can't you see I'm reading" ... would be disrespectful. "A book" is just snarky, IMHO ... and a vastly preferred response than the first! LOL! Why does a non-reader feel entitled to interrupt a reader while reading? It is so annoying!

I would probably respond with, "thank you Captain Obvious." It really depends on who says it and how they say it.
