So I have some Tim Holtz stencils in my stash that I bought for some reason... besides ink, what do you do with them? I know there is some kind of paste, what kind/type do you recommend? One of the stencils is sort of a burlap pattern so it seems something more texturey than ink should be used.

Use embossing paste with them and it looks fab. My favourite ones are the Ranger Texture Pastes in opaque and clear but there's so many different types of things you can use and they all have different names, just to confuse people! Try modelling paste for a cheap alternative.

I love using Nuvo Glimmer Paste With stencils. With any pastes, Nuvo or Ranger, you can change the color by mixing them with regular Distress Inks. These are some Christmas Cards I made last year. Using the Moonstone Glimmer paste. The red one I mixed with Fired Brick Distress Ink. The others are just the Moonstone color. It changes depending on what cardstock you use it on.

My IRL friend makes and sells mixed media panels and she uses joint compound [or sheetrock paste] from the hardware store. It's very similar to Spackle. And both are much cheaper than the small jar of Ranger Texture Paste. Especially if you can get it from the Dollar Store!

I personally do not like embossing paste. Sometimes I will use texture paste but my favorite thing to use is acrylic paint. Just pounce a makeup sponge into a bit of paint (not much at all), and pounce over the stencil. I do that ALL of the time. Then once dry, I doodle over top of it. Here is an example (look at the flower on the right). That was stenciled on book paper, cut out, pasted onto the card, and then I doodled over it.

We played with textured pastey stuff in the cardtober challenges last month. I tried out the DIY stuff just to see if it was something that I might want to buy a fancier version of. I didn't use it with a stencil yet, but I'm sure it would work well. Here's the thread

I see Tonic has just introduced an expanding mousse- Vicky P showed it in a recent video. I think that would be fun to try with stencils.

That would mess with the design. No it just seems to puff up a bit - and only when you heat emboss. Here's the video and the mousse is shown in action at about 12 minutes. youtu.be/QfZ6lBzuAww
