After his body lying in state in the DC Capitol building for however long it was...and then the huge state funeral...now the funeral in Texas....can you imagine how exhausted the family must be? I'm watching on CNN, so that just occurred to me.

I was thinking it makes sense to have a TX funeral for friends. I didn't see Jenna Bush in the first few rows at the state funeral? Maybe it's better to have multiple events, because I remember my last funeral we went to the family's house afterwards and it must have been very comforting to have so many people around to mourn with you. But when that one day is over, so quick everyone is gone. Might be nice to drag it out a bit. I wonder if it's different speakers at each funeral? I didn't watch so I only know that George W Bush spoke, don't know if the Sr's other kids spoke or if they get to speak at the TX funeral? The Bushs' are all traveling on private plane on their schedule.

Those East of the Mississippi River were invited to Washington, while those West of the Mississippi were invited to Houston Funeral. Yesterday three of the granddaughters, Jenna, Lauren and Ashley, did readings.

Im watching. I read online today that the Oak Ridge Boys are preforming in this service, and they've basically been 'on call' for the last few months. Everywhere they traveled they brought their suits in preparation for today, in case they got the call that he had passed. Apparently they were good friends with Bush and would often spend time with him in Maine and at his home in Texas.

I thought this same thing with Senator McCain. I hate to go through one small private ceremony. I can't imagine how they do it on a public stage several times.

YES! Yesterday, I kept thinking about how utterly EXHAUSTED they all must be! Also, having CAMERAS on them constantly! One of the CNN commentators said last night that she noticed Barbara’s body language looked immediately relaxed as she & GW got closer to the entrance of the plane.
All I could think about was how they and the rest of the family must have felt SO relieved to finalllllly sit in the plane, away from cameras, and just talk / cry freely, NAP, or just take some deep breaths and close their eyes for a while.

I thought about that yesterday then again this morning when NBC announced a special segment Jenna did called "letters from gampy" or something. How in the world has she had the time/stamina?! They have to be absolutely exhausted.
Though I did also hear at one point yesterday that they expected this sometime over the summer so were prepared in many ways. The reference at the time was about GWB's eulogy.

I was thinking about that yesterday, when I realized how 'old/tired' George Bush looked for a few seconds as they walked into the cathedral.

..can you imagine how exhausted the family must be? Oh my! It would be exhausting for sure. Any funeral of a close loved one just wrings you out mentally and physically. I love seeing some laughter. A few laughs during a sad time really help a lot.

We had two funerals for each of my parents - one in our hometown and one in my mom's hometown, where they had chosen to be buried. That was exhausting enough. I can't imagine going through that in the public eye.

It was so heartfelt and her voice was absolutely beautiful. She made the words come alive. I have never heard anyone read so beautifully.

don't forget the ceremony and internment at his Presidential Library. a regular funeral is exhausting enough for anyone but this is a lot. and so much of it is coordinated to the minute so the family doesn't have a chance to deviate from the schedule.

Yesterday, I had the thought, "What if someone needs to go to the bathroom?" There didn't seem to be much downtime.

I just keep thinking about W & his siblings. They've lost both their parents in what? Eight months or so? I remember how hard the first year was after I lost my mom and I cannot imagine how hard this Christmas will be knowing they've lost mom and dad.

Now CNN is showing the train carrying President Bush's body through Texas to the presidential library. Very touching to see all the people lined up along the side of the tracks, on overpasses, etc. Now I need to google "presidential library" because to be honest I don't really know what goes into one (I've never visited one).

There was a clip on the Today show talking to Jenna and she had said something about how it was so sad that this happened so close to Christmas. Her oldest daughter heard and said, Of course Gampy had to go before Christmas - he has to decorate the tree with Gammy.
Jenna said they had never spent a Christmas apart in 74 years so I guess he wasn't planning on starting now.

I can't watch anything today while I'm at work, but that is probably a good thing. Yesterday I cried off and on all day long while I was watching different things Sometimes I'm such a sap!

If you can, go to one - they are so interesting and capture the moment in history. We have the Reagan library in our town and it's really done well. I just won tickets to the holiday light display which is new this year so it gives me a little extra kick to make the time to go. I have to admit the last time I was there, I kept looking at Air Force One wondering "how did that get here" over and over.

Regardless of what anyone thinks of Bush's term as president, I find myself reflecting a lot this week on what it means to have a life well-lived. We should all be so lucky as to have meaningful work that contributes positively to society, to spend 74 years with a beloved spouse, and to have beloved children and grandchildren who love you back. Even if he had never spent a day in public office or become famous in any way, that right there is (to me) a successful life.
