There are quite a few celebrities that have homes in my city and surrounding areas and see them out and about. I would approach them as often as I would any complete stranger which is pretty much never.

Most likely not. I saw Donald Sutherland in airport once, but there were enough others mobbing him, I wasn't going into the fray.
I did have to explain to Robert Conrad once why I wouldn't let his wife into a restaurant. I was working crowd control at a fundraiser and she didn't have her required ID. I didn't know her from Adam (Eve?) and refused to let her enter. Robert Conrad was much more gracious about it than his wife had been. I know a woman who's mother had lunch s*x with Robert Conrad.

If it was George Strait I would. I have listned to his music for 35+ years. If he was having dinner with his family I might just smile and try be unobtrusive as I snapped a picture.
Back in the late 80's I worked for the USO in Washington DC. I was sitting at the volunteer desk doing the schedule and this handsome gentleman walked in and came up to the desk and said, "can you tell xyz that Alex is here?" Sure. I sent him upstairs. About 45 mins later one of my co-workers called me and said that Alex Trebeck was there, he came to our office to meet the staff, take pictures and sign autographs. He had approached from the direction of the metro which was a short block away. He had a newspaper tucked under his arm. Very nice man and very unassuming.

Well, I didn't approach him, but did bump into Josh Charles at the entrance to Bloomingdales in NYC. I was meeting a couple of girlfriends, and kept checking out the door and scanning in the store. As I turned back to look out the door, Josh kind of flew into me. There was a weird moment when, clutching arms, I recognized him, so of course said "hey, hi" and then reality hit and I said "oops, I don't know you". He laughed and kept going. A summer job had me interact with James Garner and Stuart Margolin regularly. Two very down-to-earth guys, James Garner especially was charming, polite and low key. This was a couple of years after Rockford Files had gone off the air. My oldest celebrity moment was when I was a teenager having dinner out with the family. Doug Sheehan was on General Hospital then (this was just before he was on Knots Landing) and he came into the restaurant with a group. Given that he was in a full kilt and played the bagpipes while waiting for their drinks/meal, I'm pretty sure he would have been happy to have people approach him. My sisters and I were far too polite and my parents had no idea who he was, although my Scottish mother enjoyed the entertainment. My sister had the best celebrity interaction. She was with a group in NYC celebrating a 50th birthday and went to Sardi's. By a lovely conincidence, after their performance the cast of That Championship Season came in and ended up helping them celebrate. That would be Keifer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Brian Cox, James Gaffigan and Chris Noth.

No, I wouldn't go out of my way. I've had some fun celebrity encounters though. In an elevator with Barry Bonds in San Francisco. Just us. We smiled at each other. Elevator door opened and he was MOBBED. In NYC I was walking up a staircase with Jane Fonda. Now there, I did say something. Said hello and we started chatting. She was with her grandkids. I met her several years later when I was her "handler" where she was the keynote speaker at a fundraiser. We got to hang out together and I told her about the NYC encounter, which of course she did not remember but was very gracious.
We were in line with Diane Keaton and her daughter at Soarin' Over California. We didn't say anything, just in line together. Also saw Eric Stonestreet at Carthay Circle in CA Adventure. Didn't approach him. He was with a group of friends minding his own business. It would have been weird.

I am usually pretty clueless and also wouldn't want to bother them. Although yesterday at the Vikings games, the people behind us were saying that Ricky Rubio (MN Timberwolves player) was sitting in the next section. About 15 minutes later, he came by (my seat is in the aisle). I just said "Hi, Ricky!" as he passed by and he turned around and waved.

No. Unless it's an event where interaction with the public is expected like a premiere party or fundraiser. Otherwise, I just giggle and point them out to my clueless husband.
I stood in line behind Billy Bob Thornton at the movies. He has freakishly fine skin, and he is tiny. Sat next to Diane Keaton at the movies, in front of Ben Affleck and Jen Garner, and behind Victoria Beckham and her kids. All different movies, and no, did not talk to or approach any of them.
I met Jimmy Kimmel when he was co-hosting Win Ben Stein's Money, and of course Ben. DS was on Late Night with Craig Ferguson and the Wiggles, so we met them then.
When I was in college I worked retail and helped so many- Lisa Marie Presley when she was pregnant with her first, Jacqueline Smith, Mindy Cohen, Jackie Collins... I talked to them, but only as a shop girl. I was also a member of a service organization in college and we volunteered at many celebrity events. At One of these events, a very drunk Charleton Heston tried to buy three of us (underage girls) a drink. His minder steered him away quickly. I also went trick or treating at Jimmy Stewart's house, and his dog got stuck trying to eat my costume, so he invited me in to get it sorted out.

I've seen a few minor celebs and just let them be. But I have to say, I would definitely dive-bomb Channing Tatum if he ever gets in my line of sight

I stood behind Sam Elliott in a grocery line once...did not interact with him, just stood unassumingly behind him and listened to that sexy low "Beef! It's what's for dinner" voice apologize to the cashier for not having his payment ready. That man is one beautiful, tall drink of water. Damn I would have been drooling over his voice alone ugh, he is the definition of macho!!
If the celeb was George Clooney or someone from TWD for sure, if they were with family I would probably not though but damn GC would be hard to not want to get a photo with come on its GC lol!!

No. They are entitled to have a day off, just like the rest of us. If they initiated the conversation, that would be different.

I had the good fortune to meet and greet Bill Cosby and Tim Allen when I worked backstage security for their concerts. I got to welcome them in (separate occasions). Did a dance with Tim Allen as I was trying to let him through, lol. Awkward. He didn't say much. Bill Cosby was much friendlier. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a picture them with them since I was working.
We don't get many celebrities on the street here in our little college town, but if I saw one (and recognized them), I don't know if I'd have the nerve to go talk to them.

I wouldn't intentionally. My DH and I were on our honeymoon in Maui in 98 and we were looking at the shops in town and this kid comes around the corner and walks right into me. There I was looking eye to eye (i'm only 5'3..) with Jonathan Taylor Thomas. He was a pretty big deal at that time with Tool Time. Of course I YELLED because I was surprised and caught off guard and said "JONATHON TAYLOR THOMAS!!". He quickly walked away from me and down the street, which I don't blame him. DH just shook his head and laughed, you scared the kid away.
I did eat at a table next to Joe Montana in Napa. I did not approach him, but slipped away to call my DH to ask him.."guess who I'm sitting next to..your favorite football player of all time...??". I knew he lived in Napa and was out with his family and probably didn't want to be disturbed.

In my early 20s I worked for an upscale hotel, which also hosted a lot of celebrity guests. We were schooled on NOT acknowledging celebrities in any way, or face possible termination. I "met" Reba McEntire and Barbara Mandrell and a few other country stars whose names I can't remember because I've never listened to country but I remember they were big deals at the time. It was very difficult to be so young and not act star struck, but I do remember they were very personable and kind.

Nah, I never really get star struck. Unless it's in a situation where it would be natural to talk to them, I would just treat them like any other person I meet.

A couple of years ago I had an early check-in arranged for a very nice suite at the hotel & casino complex which hosted the SA premiere of "Invictus". I was advised at the desk that the suite was not 100% ready yada yada. I needed to drop off my stuff and get to a lunch, so I said it was fine and was taken up. About 5 minutes later the doorbell went- thought it was my luggage. I opened the door to Clint Eastwood! He was apologetic, said he had left some stuff plugged in behind the bar. Total gentleman.
Off to read the rest of the replies- fun thread!

No!! We went to a concert last Christmas and after getting back to the hotel realised that most of the 'names' where staying there. Some were at breakfast the next morning and later one of the 'big names' was alone in the lobby holding an iPad and obviously dealing with email when I was waiting for the rest of the family to join me. I couldn't bring myself to even nod in his direction because I was so bothered about disturbing his private time.

Close encounters quite a few times but I just couldn't bother, interrupt or pester! Well, except . . . lol!
My sister won a cooking contest on Regis & Kathie Lee and they flew us into NYC for the show. We had a blast! Early call the morning of the show - we ring for the elevator, the door opens and Barry White is standing there. He smiled at us and said (in that Barry White voice) Good Morning Ladies. We were over the moon! He was actually a guest on the show and talked with us in the Green Room. Regis made a big deal out of it . . . lol! Kathie Lee was really great, Regis was a little high strung for me! lol
Traveling home from LA a few years ago I was waiting on my plane. Several gentlemen sat down next to me, one carrying a guitar case. One of them asked if I was heading to Ohio and I said yes. We chatted a little more than another guy came up and started freaking out, Oh my God, I can't believe I'm seeing the Peter Frampton. He looked at me and said - sorry for the interruption.
More recently in NYC this summer, I had my grandson (7 months old) sitting on a park bench across from the Ice Rink while my daughters took my older grandson into the Lego Store. One woman stopped to talk to me, asking about my grandson, how old he was, how handsome he was, etc. She looked familiar but I didn't want to just ask so we chatted for a while on the bench then she said she had to get back to work. The more we talked I realized it was Vera Wang!!!!! She is beautiful!

I'm really really bad at recognizing faces, so I wouldn't know Sam Elliott from my next door neighbor if I ran into either of them.
I actually didn't recognize my son's really good friend when she was working out on the elliptical next to me a few weeks ago. She told my son and he gave me crap for it. She could have been Kim Kardashian and I wouldn't have recognized her.

I know I would because I have (in appropriate situations). Paul Walker once came in my work and you better believe I talked to him.
My best friend's husband is in a well known band and I've met lots of celebrities/musicians back stage and at events. Usually I'm introduced to them so they are always nice. But, there have been a few that I thought wouldn't be so nice if I just walked up to them. It's also strange to be with my friend when he gets recognized and asked for an autograph or a picture. It doesn't happen often because he's the drummer, but I always giggle at him when it does because he gets embarrassed.

I wouldn't go out of my way. However, I have talked to a few. I used to live and work in Utah. I worked in a high-end TV shop (over 25 years ago), and several of the Utah Jazz players came in, Karl Malone, Mark Eaton, Thurl Bailey. I was the secretary/receptionist/cashier so they had to go through me to purchase anything.
When we lived in Montana, my kids went to the same elementary school as Andie MacDowell's kids. She went by Rose Qualley when she lived there. She helped sometimes for the little concerts they did in the school and a friend of mine sat next to her at one of them and chatted for a while and I got in the conversation a bit. My friend's daughter and Andie's daughter were in the same class and they knew each other.
My daughter works for the Marching Band at Boise State while she is doing her Masters, and her boss told her to kick out a man that was in the stadium (all rehearsals are closed and the stadium is supposed to be off limits). He was an older gentleman who was wearing a nice Boston t-shirt and she said he just came to listen to his nephew play. Later she found out it was Gary Pihl, an original and still member of Boston who was in town that night to play a concert.

Two years ago my family and I were at Disney for a holiday weekend. We were staying on the concierge floor at the Boardwalk Hotel. One morning we were in the lounge having breakfast and I saw a woman standing in line who looked like Geena Davis. I leaned over to my husband and said, "hey, doesn't that woman look like Geena Davis?" He said, it is Geena Davis. The lounge is small and my husband and I were sitting in two arm chairs with a small sofa and table across from us. Wouldn't you know it but she and her husband sat in the sofa across from us. I smiled said hi and then promptly ignored her. I had no idea what to say to her. No one in the lounge bothered her or asked her for an autograph. She had no make up on and was wearing sweat pants and a t-shirt. Her children were also with her.
We also ran into Tina Fey and her kids, nanny, and I think her mother on the concierge floor at the Grand Floridian Hotel in Disney.

I don't think I would. I can't say 'never'- but I don't think I would. I saw Stacy Julian and her family at Disney World once, when CK and SS were at the height of their popularity. It was interesting to see her with her family- but I never would have intruded on family time, to get a picture or autograph.
I know someone that has a connection to a celebrity...sees her a few times a year. Usually at family parties, but sometimes 'out'- not public events, but a group of them in a public place. She said it's like going behind the scenes at the zoo, when they're in public. People will climb over the family and friends in the party to get to the celebrity. It's like the family and friends don't even exist. They will interrupt meals, conversations, dancing- you name it. Even the people who keep their distance and pretend not to notice her- or care, can act weird trying to 'casually' catch her attention. Sometimes there will be the odd 'bold' person who busts into the group being overly familiar or a numb skull that stops by to make inappropriate comments. Crazy. I can't imagine behaving like that.
In terms of people I'd be willing to wait in line to meet- I can only think of one. If I had the opportunity to meet Stephen King, I'd wait in a reasonably long line to do so.

No, I wouldn't. There is a minor celebrity that lives in my neighborhood. He was pretty famous in the 60's and 70's, and still performs occasionally. He and his wife are the kindest people you would ever want to meet. She has told me that he can't go anywhere alone because he will get recognized. The man can't go into a McDonald's without people constantly interrupting his meal. So when they are on the road, he stays in the car and she runs in to get the food. Imagine never being able to eat a hot meal in a fast food joint or restaurant because people are interrupting you to get your autograph or a picture. He is very kind about it when people do, because he's a very kind person. But just because he doesn't act bothered by it doesn't mean he isn't bothered by it.

My avatar is me and Pat Monahan the lead singer from Train. Train hosts a cruise for their fans each February. He was listening to another band (Matt Nathanson) and made himself available for pictures and a chat. it was a 4 day music festival and lots of opportunities to meet and greet. I don't have much opportunity to see celebs these days, but in my past did run into Ted Danson and Parker Stevenson.

We saw Jennifer Garner hiking in Muir Woods. I rememeber thinking how beautiful she looked in person. She was with two of her children, and had a look of panic that someone would talk to her or take pictures. I guess she considered it family time. Eveyone on the trails took a send look, but gave her her space and no pictures!
